Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward John Hamilton's The Human Mind: A Treatise in Mental Philosophy is one man's personal philosophy of a metaphysical system and human thought. Hamilton's work was written with the goal of being used as a philosophy textbook. The Human Mind is a massive volume that spans over 700 pages and deals with a wide range of topics. The book begins with Hamilton offering a definition of mental philosophy, which is an important place to start and helps to provide the reader with the necessary context from which to approach the subject. The author tackles a wide range of subjects throughout the book, mostly focused on the relationship between the mind and the physical body and human brain. Included chapters separately discuss human intellect, the objectivity of thought, human senses, association and suggestion, memory, the rational faculty, and probable reasoning, among many more topics. Each chapter is written so as to stand alone from the others, however the reader will likely find it necessary to read the complete work in order to truly grasp the author's philosophy. The Human Mind is an impressive work of modern philosophy. Hamilton is clearly a student of philosophy, as his work frequently references many of the great philosophical works of the past. Despite the size of the volume, Hamilton's style and the formatting of the book into short chapters make this an easily readable text. Readers interested in philosophy of mind will find The Human Mind: A Treatise in Mental Philosophy to be a pleasant read. While Edward Hamilton is not remembered as a great philosopher, the author has pieced together an interesting personal philosophy, and one that deserves to be read by students of modern philosophical writings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Descartes' philosophy represented one of the most explicit statements of mind-body dualism in the history of philosophy. Its most familiar expression is found in the Meditations (1641) and in Part I of The Principles 0/ Philosophy (1644). However neither of these books provided a detailed discussion of dualism. The Meditations was primarily concerned with finding a foundation for reliable human knowledge, while the Principles attempted to provide an alternative metaphysical framework, in contrast with scholastic philosophy, within which natural philosophy or a scien tific explanation of natural phenomena could be developed. Thus neither book ex plicitly presents a Cartesian theory of the mind nor does either give a detailed account of how, if dualism were accepted, mind and body would interact. The task of articulating such a theory was left to two further works, only one of which was completed by Descartes, viz. the Treatise on Man (published posthumously in 1664). The Treatise began with the following sentence, describing the hypothetical human beings who were to be explained in that work: 'These human beings will be com posed, as we are, of a soul and a body; and, first of all, I must describe the body for you separately; then, also separately, the soul; and fmally I must show you how these two natures would have to be joined and united to constitute human beings resembling us.

Such are the various lights in which the human mind may be regarded: physiologically, ethically, politically, theologically. It is thus the object of many sciences, --but of sciences that, even when they seem most remote, have still one tie of intimate connection, in the common relation, which they all directly bear to the series of feelings of the inquirer himself.--Introduction.
