Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Rocks, Rock-Weathering and Soils In the work here presented the writer has endeavored to bring together in systematic form the results of several years' study of the phenomena attendant upon rock degeneration and soil formation. Although beginning with a discussion of rocks and rock-forming minerals, the work must be considered in no sense a petrology as this word is commonly used. What is here given relative to the origin, structure, and composition of rock masses is regarded as an essential introduction to the chapters on rock-weathering. The portion dealing with the structure and composition of the resultant materials is an essential corollary to these same chapters. It is believed that no apology is necessary for bringing out the present work. The origin, structure, and mineral composition of rocks, particularly the eruptive varieties, are matters which have of late received much attention. In fact, it is to these rocks that the petrologists have devoted their best efforts. Since the introduction of the microscope into petrographic work, there has, however, been very little time devoted to the study of rocks in a weathered condition. The chemists have made analyses, but have disregarded the physical and mineralogical nature of the material analyzed. Other workers have studied the physical properties of rocks decayed, - in the form of soils, - but have in their turn disregarded their mineral and chemical nature. The writer has aimed to bring together here such results obtained by these workers in divers fields as it is believed will be for the mutual benefit of all concerned. The state of comminution reached by rocks during the processes of long-continued, secular decay, and the amount of leaching such have undergone, are certainly of as much practical interest to the agriculturist as of theoretical interest to the geologist. Since then it has been my privilege to deliver a series of lectures on the subject to six consecutive classes, first at the Massachusetts Agricultural College, and later here in the Imperial College of Agriculture. When I entered into an engagement with the Japanese Government, the continuation of such instruction was stipulated as a part of my duty. These facts account for the compilation of the material here gathered. The reasons for now presenting the results to a larger audience are chiefly these: As the work has progressed, my students have repeatedly requested the preservation of the lectures in a more permanent and accessible form; while the magnitude of the field from which I have garnered, and the extremely scattered condition of the literature to which access was found necessary, have convinced me of the desirability of attempting to bring the materials together in a more readily accessible form, - an attempt not previously made, I believe. Hence the book must present some features peculiar to itself, and may, therefore, reasonably seek a favorable, or at least considerate, reception by those in whose interests it has been prepared. Processes and products of physical weathering, chemical weathering, and hydrothermal alteration of batholithic rocks can be ranked in terms of degree of weathering and used to predict slope stability. Bulk density, hardness, unconfined compressive strength, and velocity of sonic wave transmission of weathered rock samples are all strongly correlated with weathering properties. Following subtle, initial hydrolysis of biotites, physical weathering processes are dominant in the breakdown of rock to grus at and near the soil surface. Grus is often formed with little alteration of biotites and feldspars to secondary minerals or amorphous oxides of silicon, aluminum, and iron. Bedrock buried at depths below the rooting zone is subject to intense chemical weathering and mineral alteration. The degree to which chemical weathering processes can proceed is related to the inherent slope stability of the site. On gentle slopes with low erosion rates, chemical weathering can advance to a point where the weathered product consists of quartz grains embedded in a matrix of clays and crystalline and amorphous oxides of silicon, aluminum, and iron.
