Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Rocks, Rock-Weathering and Soils In the work here presented the writer has endeavored to bring together in systematic form the results of several years' study of the phenomena attendant upon rock degeneration and soil formation. Although beginning with a discussion of rocks and rock-forming minerals, the work must be considered in no sense a petrology as this word is commonly used. What is here given relative to the origin, structure, and composition of rock masses is regarded as an essential introduction to the chapters on rock-weathering. The portion dealing with the structure and composition of the resultant materials is an essential corollary to these same chapters. It is believed that no apology is necessary for bringing out the present work. The origin, structure, and mineral composition of rocks, particularly the eruptive varieties, are matters which have of late received much attention. In fact, it is to these rocks that the petrologists have devoted their best efforts. Since the introduction of the microscope into petrographic work, there has, however, been very little time devoted to the study of rocks in a weathered condition. The chemists have made analyses, but have disregarded the physical and mineralogical nature of the material analyzed. Other workers have studied the physical properties of rocks decayed, - in the form of soils, - but have in their turn disregarded their mineral and chemical nature. The writer has aimed to bring together here such results obtained by these workers in divers fields as it is believed will be for the mutual benefit of all concerned. The state of comminution reached by rocks during the processes of long-continued, secular decay, and the amount of leaching such have undergone, are certainly of as much practical interest to the agriculturist as of theoretical interest to the geologist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil science is perhaps one of the oldest practical sciences, having been of concern to man probably from the time he progressed from a strictly preda tory life to one in which agriculture became important. In view of the anti quity of concern with the subject, it is perhaps surprising that it can be approached from a fresh viewpoint, as is done in this book. Because soil science is an applied science, it is not surprising that the approach is usually descriptive, rather than imaginative. For agriculturalists and other land users, perhaps the most important part of soil science is the description of soils and the capacities of such soils to maintain crops, and this is reflected by the fact that soil science is usually treated ima highly descriptive manner, with soil classification being one of the main efforts. The treatment of the subject from a geological point of view, with considerable emphasis on the evolution of soils and the reasons governing their composition and form, makes this a highly readable book. Books on soil science are timely, with present-day concern with such major problems as the pollution of our environment and the possibility of overreaching our capacity for producing food for an expanding population.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rocks and Soils: Their Origin, Composition and Characteristics; Chemical, Geological and Agricultural Five years ago I was requested to prepare a course of instruction in chemical geology for students in one of the American agricultural colleges. Since then it has been my privilege to deliver a series of lectures on the subject to six consecutive classes, first at the Massachusetts Agricultural College, and later here in the Imperial College of Agriculture. When I entered into an engagement with the Japanese Government, the continuation of such instruction was stipulated as a part of my duty. These facts account for the compilation of the material here gathered. The reasons for now presenting the results to a larger audience are chiefly these: As the work has progressed, my students have repeatedly requested the preservation of the lectures in a more permanent and accessible form; while the magnitude of the field from which I have garnered, and the extremely scattered condition of the literature to which access was found necessary, have convinced me of the desirability of attempting to bring the materials together in a more readily accessible form, - an attempt not previously made, I believe. Hence the book must present some features peculiar to itself, and may, therefore, reasonably seek a favorable, or at least considerate, reception by those in whose interests it has been prepared. The nature of the work is such that I have no claim for the presentation of new material; I have neither theories nor opinions of my own to force upon the public. Such personal views as are offered are only expressed where such a course was deemed essential to a clear presentation of the facts recorded. Book The Natural History of Igneous Rocks Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Natural History of Igneous Rocks Classic Reprint written by Alfred Harker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Igneous Rocks The following page are, in substance, a course of lectures delivered at Cambridge; and, in offering them to a larger audience, the general plan of treatment has been retained. Igneous action and igneous rocks are first considered from a purely geological standpoint. In emphasizing this aspect, I have been influenced by a conviction that the subject has not yet been accorded its due place as an integral part of historical geology. The middle portion of the book deals with the crystallization of igneous rock-magmas, regarded as complex solutions. Although the subject is one which might be more skilfully handled by a professed chemist, a presentation of it as it appears to a petrologist may be not less useful to the student. I have in the main followed Professor Vogt, whose writings in the last few years have thrown so much light upon the matter. Some of the questions briefly and tentatively touched in the concluding chapters are of a more speculative character, but so fundamental in their scope that they could not be passed over in silence. Book Treatise on Geomorphology

Download or read book Treatise on Geomorphology written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-02-27 with total page 6392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changing focus and approach of geomorphic research suggests that the time is opportune for a summary of the state of discipline. The number of peer-reviewed papers published in geomorphic journals has grown steadily for more than two decades and, more importantly, the diversity of authors with respect to geographic location and disciplinary background (geography, geology, ecology, civil engineering, computer science, geographic information science, and others) has expanded dramatically. As more good minds are drawn to geomorphology, and the breadth of the peer-reviewed literature grows, an effective summary of contemporary geomorphic knowledge becomes increasingly difficult. The fourteen volumes of this Treatise on Geomorphology will provide an important reference for users from undergraduate students looking for term paper topics, to graduate students starting a literature review for their thesis work, and professionals seeking a concise summary of a particular topic. Information on the historical development of diverse topics within geomorphology provides context for ongoing research; discussion of research strategies, equipment, and field methods, laboratory experiments, and numerical simulations reflect the multiple approaches to understanding Earth’s surfaces; and summaries of outstanding research questions highlight future challenges and suggest productive new avenues for research. Our future ability to adapt to geomorphic changes in the critical zone very much hinges upon how well landform scientists comprehend the dynamics of Earth’s diverse surfaces. This Treatise on Geomorphology provides a useful synthesis of the state of the discipline, as well as highlighting productive research directions, that Educators and students/researchers will find useful. Geomorphology has advanced greatly in the last 10 years to become a very interdisciplinary field. Undergraduate students looking for term paper topics, to graduate students starting a literature review for their thesis work, and professionals seeking a concise summary of a particular topic will find the answers they need in this broad reference work which has been designed and written to accommodate their diverse backgrounds and levels of understanding Editor-in-Chief, Prof. J. F. Shroder of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, is past president of the QG&G section of the Geological Society of America and present Trustee of the GSA Foundation, while being well respected in the geomorphology research community and having won numerous awards in the field. A host of noted international geomorphologists have contributed state-of-the-art chapters to the work. Readers can be guaranteed that every chapter in this extensive work has been critically reviewed for consistency and accuracy by the World expert Volume Editors and by the Editor-in-Chief himself No other reference work exists in the area of Geomorphology that offers the breadth and depth of information contained in this 14-volume masterpiece. From the foundations and history of geomorphology through to geomorphological innovations and computer modelling, and the past and future states of landform science, no "stone" has been left unturned!

Book Soil and Bedrock Properties

Download or read book Soil and Bedrock Properties written by James L. Clayton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil and Bedrock Properties: Weathering and Alteration Products and Processes in the Idaho Batholith The mechanical properties of granitic rock and the derived weathered materials are intimately related to slope stability in the Idaho batholith. Processes and products of physical weathering, chemical weathering, and hydrothermal alteration of batholithic rocks can be ranked in terms of degree of weathering and used to predict slope stability. Bulk density, hardness, unconfined compressive strength, and velocity of sonic wave transmission of weathered rock samples are all strongly correlated with weathering properties. Following subtle, initial hydrolysis of biotites, physical weathering processes are dominant in the breakdown of rock to grus at and near the soil surface. Grus is often formed with little alteration of biotites and feldspars to secondary minerals or amorphous oxides of silicon, aluminum, and iron. Bedrock buried at depths below the rooting zone is subject to intense chemical weathering and mineral alteration. The degree to which chemical weathering processes can proceed is related to the inherent slope stability of the site. On gentle slopes with low erosion rates, chemical weathering can advance to a point where the weathered product consists of quartz grains embedded in a matrix of clays and crystalline and amorphous oxides of silicon, aluminum, and iron. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rocks and Their Origins Rocktaluses, and all the varied alluvium carried seaward as the outcash of continental land, well deserve a chapter to themselves. But there is really no end to the subject, which embraces all the accumulative processes of the earth. A few vacation-journeys, judiciously planned out, teach us that text-books are merely signposts to set us on what is believed to be the way. When the path enters the great forest, or rises above green lakelets to the crags, we find there those who went before us, pointing to unconquered lands.
