Book A Treatise on Photographic Optics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Treatise on Photographic Optics Classic Reprint written by Reginald Sorrè Cole and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Photographic Optics The object of this treatise is to provide an account of the principles of Optics, so far as they apply to Photography, in a form which is of scientific value, while not of too abstruse a nature to place it beyond the reach of all but the professional mathematician or physicist. I have attempted to steer a middle course between giving too much mathematics and giving none at all; the former course would restrict the book to a few, while the latter would deprive it of all real value. To make the mathematics as intelligible as possible, most of the results have been illustrated by worked numerical examples, and symbolical results have been expressed in words. The chapter on aberration necessarily contains a certain amount of algebraical formulae, too many perhaps for many readers, but care has been taken to explain clearly, by means of diagrams, the principles which underlie the formulae. I have to thank Captain Abney for giving me permission to use many of his diagrams, Major Darwin for allowing me to quote from his paper on lens testing at Kew Observatory, and the publishers of Photography Annual for allowing me to copy the tables contained in 127, 151, and 156;also I owe it to the kindness of the Sandell Plate Company that I am able to give an example of a test film for the speed of plates. My thanks are also due to the Rev. W. F. H. Curtis, who first suggested to me to write, and has given me many valuable suggestions and much help. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Photographic Optics: A Text Book for the Professional and Amateur WE all have a pretty fair notion of what we mean when We talk of light, and yet when an attempt is made to give a precise definition of the term, to limit its meaning closely, the difficulty is by no means small. The first idea of light, and one which is strictly correct so far as it goes, is that which enables us to see objects and the question what is this which gives us the power will prob ably elicit from a scientist that it is a form of radiant energy, which statement is also probably strictly correct, but requires a little investigation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book of the Lens: An Elementary Treatise on the Action and Use of the Photographic Lens In optics we are concerned mainly with the effect of placing obstructions of various kinds in the way of the travelling energy and wavefront. A lens is nothing but a temporary obstruction placed in the way of the light, and the effect of such an obstruction is that the direction of the impulse is changed, and the form of the wavefront altered, just as the circular form of the water ripple is altered if it meets an obstruction in the pond. This is the point where the two theories of optics start. We may study only the effect of the obstruction on the wave front, which is physical optics or we may confine ourselves to the study of the effect of the obstruction on the direction of the impulse, which is geometrical optics. In either case we shall arrive at the same result, for under all conditions the direction of impulse is normal to the wave front, and so the two change together. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Photographic Optics: Including the Description of Lenses and Enlarging Apparatus The five aberrations of most interest have been the object of our especial care. A radiating point of homogeneous colour) being placed at infinity, and in the axis of a convergent lens, emits parallel rays, which on emerging from the lens do not meet at one point in the axis; and therefore the image of the point is surrounded by a circle of diffused light, called the circle of spherical aberration. If the point is placed some degrees out of the ax1s, the circle of aberration becomes elliptical; and if the point is very obliquely placed, its image takes the form of a comet. We have carefully examined the conditions necessary to reduce this spherical aberration to the minimum by the employment of the diaphragm, or better by joining to the convergent lens a divergent lens, with appropriate radii of curvature, which makes the combination aplanatic, that is, free from spherical aberration along its axis. Book Treatise on Optics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Treatise on Optics Classic Reprint written by William N. Griffin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Optics 1. When a material object is presented before us, we become by vision sensible of its existence and figure. In such a case light is said to be propagated from the object to our eyes, and the science of Optics has for its design the examination of the circumstances of such propagation. The science is divided into Geometrical and Physical Optics. In Geometrical Optics the circumstances of the transmission and modification of light are computed on certain laws established by experiment; in Physical Optics these laws are accounted for on hypotheses of the structure of bodies, and of the matter filling the space in which they are placed. In a similar manner in Geometrical Astronomy the phenomena of heavenly bodies are calculated on observed laws which their apparent motions are found to obey; in Physical Astronomy these apparent laws are shewn to result from the hypothesis of Gravitation. The former branch of the science is the subject of the present treatise, wherein from certain laws established by experiment under simple circumstances, the course of light under more complex circumstances is computed, and the results applied to the construction of Optical Instruments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Photography N umerous changes have been made in this edition. Matters become obsolete have been suppressed, and improvements in the processes generally practiced have been described. We have not noticed; however, any of the new processes in printing, Which have lately made their appearance. The processes of carbon print ingvie consider not yet sufficiently practical to be of use to the professional photographer. We thought of being able to give a method superior to the ordinary printing process, and even, on this account, retarded the publication of this edition; but the process in question turned out to - have been greatly overrated. We refer here to the Wothlotype process, the appear ance of which created such an excitement in the pho tographic community. The results obtained by this process do not meet the anticipation of photographers. Prints made by it possess no advantage over those made in the ordinary way, neither ln quality, facility of manipulation, cost, nor permanency. Our aim being to bring forth a guide for practical photographers, we have thus omitted a description of it, and devoted our Space to objects of more direct value.
