Book The Fundamentals of Naval Tactics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fundamentals of Naval Tactics Classic Reprint written by Romeo Bernotti and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamentals of Naval Tactics This work is a systematic codification in treatise form of the mathematical principles of Naval Tactics. The author is the instructor in the Art of Naval War at the Royal Italian Naval Academy, and his name is well known as the writer of a number of excellent articles of much original thought on naval tactics in the Revista Marittima. He is therefore well fitted for the task of reducing to the consecutive order and logical sequence, so necessary to the student, tactical principles and theorems. Tactics is an ever changing art; for while its scientific principles do not change, its rules necessarily change with changing conditions. No books on tactics will ever solve the problem finally, because the problem is forever changing; but if its methods are correct, these will ever be of value. Even if we do not agree with all the views of the author and of the other of his distinguished compatriots whose views he has here embodied, the work would be of value as expressing the Italian point of view; and Italy stands in the first rank of naval thought. As the title indicates, the book deals chiefly with the fundamentals, and approaches the subject more particularly from the mathematical side. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval Warfare: Its Ruling Principles and Practice Historically Treated In writing this book I have kept in mind the double object of showing that there are laws governing the conduct of naval war which cannot be transgressed with impunity; and that there is no reason to believe them abrogated by any of the changes of recent years. I was induced to undertake it from observing, with some surprise, a wide-spread conception that either there never had been any laws governing naval war, or that if there had been such in the days of sailing ships, they had been entirely swept away and destroyed by the advent of steam, steel ships, armour, breech-loading rifled guns, and torpedoes. This belief appeared to me the more singular, as no one ventured to suggest that railways, the electric telegraph, breech-loading rifled ordnance, and small arms, had altered the well-established rules of war upon the land. But in considering the existence of such antithetical ideas side by side, it appeared to me that the cause might not improbably be found in the differences of method pursued by writers of naval and of military history. There did not exist, I believed, in any language a book written with the object of discriminating between the possible and impossible, the prudent and the imprudent, the wise and the foolish, in the conduct of naval war. But books describing war upon land with these objects in view were abundant in all languages, and I had been much struck with a more recent and powerful contribution to such literature - Sir Edward Hamley's Operations of War. Book The Genius of Naval Warfare Vol 1

Download or read book The Genius of Naval Warfare Vol 1 written by René Daveluy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genius of Naval Warfare, Vol. 1: Strategy It did not take long for me to perceive that I had undertaken a task beyond my strength, and that a very long time would elapse before I should be capable of realizing my program moreover, the title I had chosen seemed to me to be pretentious, although it exactly expressed my idea. I therefore renounced the composi tion of a complete work and limited my pretensions to bringing out separate studies, without connecting them by a general title. Under these conditions A Study of Naval Combat was published in 1902, followed by A Study of Naval Strategy in 1905. These two works were the first two parts of my original design. As for the third part, it was sacrificed to the publication of The Struggle for Command of the Sea; and since then I have not had time to bring it out. A new edition of the two studies that have already appeared having become necessary, I decided to take up again my first project, inclusive of its general title, which I hope will be more readily pardoned for the ten years that have passed. I therefore Offer to-day to the criticism of my comrades Volume I of The Genius of Naval Warfare: Strategy, which is merely a revision of A Study of Naval Strategy. It is very rare for authors not to have something to add to their works, and I have not escaped the common law. I have therefore seized the opportunity to reconstruct or develop some chapters. In others I have merely made trifling corrections; but my readers will thank me for having abbreviated. Volume II, Tactics, is about to appear and will be the new edition of A Study of Naval Combat. Finally, I hope very soon to complete Organization, which will form Volume III of The Genius of Naval Warfare. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Examples, Conclusions, and Maxims of Modern Naval Tactics The tactical integer is at all times changing according as the mechan ical arts make prominent some one point in naval science, whether it be artillery or torpedoes, or the construction of the vessel itself. With wooden walls, broadside guns, and sails, it was the great fleet of many vessels. Today, with the armor-clad and its all-round fire, torpedoes, and ram, it is the single ship. Formerly the ship was a component of the fleet. To-day the fleet is a combination of ships. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Naval Warfare Classic Reprint written by James R. Thursfield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naval Warfare I should hope that readers who have found this volume useful to them will not confine their studies to it. Abundant materials for a deeper and more comprehensive study of the subject will be found in the several works incidentally mentioned or quoted in my text, and in the writings Of those other contemporary authors with whom Sir Charles Ottley has done me the high honour to associate myself. In these several works further guidance to a still more sustained study Of the subject will be found, and in this regard I would specially mention the admirable Short H istory of the Royal N avy, by Mr David Hannay - two volumes which, in addition to their other and more conspicuous merits, contain a well-selected list of authorities to be consulted prefixed to each chapter. These references, which in truth cover the whole subject, will, I trust, better serve the purpose of the advanced or advancing student than any such Bibliography as I could compile on a scale commensurate with the form and purpose of the present Manual. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a cleaned up copy of the original document published in 1834 including original illustrations and new 3D model illustrations based on the originals. It is printed a full 8 1/2 by 11 inches and we retyped the text to make it easier to read. Although the illustrations are explained thoroughly in the text, I decided to create over 35 new 3D model drawings of some of the figures and it is remarkable how the ideas seem to just "pop" out of the page. Sometime it's not clear in the original drawing which direction some of the ships are headed, so I included shadows of the ships to make it very clear which end is the stern. If this book is well received, I will expand the number of 3D drawings to include all the illustrations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Naval Warfare: Introductory Observations This book, small as it is, has taken a long time to compose. It is a succinct summary of the result of studies frequently interrupted and extending over a period the length of which will be understood when it is known that the views of the author began to be published (in the 'edinburgh Review') in 1872. It was hoped that the book would have been ready for the printer two years ago; but several things happened to delay its completion. Post ponement of publication has had at least the advantage of permitting the interpolation or addition of some passages suggested by recent occurrences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Law and Usage of War: A Practical Handbook of the Law and Usage of Land and Naval Warfare and Prize This book was originally prepared as a treatise on the law of maritime war and prize. For the convenience of the reader at a time when nobody has leisure to wade through the historical or theoretical matter with which a systematic treatise is bound to deal, I have selected from my intended book the material needed for immediate reference. More over, the present war being even for this country a war on land as much as (if not more than) a naval war, and there being no quite recent treatise, except the official Manual on war on land, it was suggested that the book should deal with war generally, and as such would be wel comed by laymen as well as by those who have to deal with its legal aspects professionally. Furthermore, to make reference easier, I have broken up the different subjects into short and concise articles, and placed the whole in alphabetical order. The appendices are as complete as it has been possible to make them without swelling the book to unpractical dimensions. The ample references to them and a full index will enable the reader to find at once the exact text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Upon the experience of these men, and from the writings of their naval editors, I have endeavored to give certain examples, deduce certain conclusions, and formulate certain maxims.
