Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Musical Form and General Composition The present Treatise is intended to supply an acknowledged want, and to be a sequel to the Author's works on Harmony and Counterpoint. He has been so often asked to write a treatise on the subject of Form, to serve a text-book, that he is encouraged to hope that the following pages may prove useful, and supply a want that is certainly felt. He had at one time intended to have written n few chapters on Instrumentation, either as an Appendix to the present Volume, or as a separata work. But. subsequent consideration has satisfied him that the excellent treatises of Berlioz and Kastner, of which the former has been translated into English, amply suffice for the instruction of students in the art of writing for various instruments. Though tho Author feels that he can honestly say that he has spared no pains to render this Treatise on Form as perfect as possible, he yet knows that there must, he omissions and blemishes in it; and he therefore hopes that if it should ever reach a second edition he may have the benefit of friendly criticism to aid him in the task of improving it. Book The Homophonic Forms of Musical Composition

Download or read book The Homophonic Forms of Musical Composition written by Percy Goetschius and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Homophonic Forms of Musical Composition: An Exhaustive Treatise on the Structure and Development of Musical Forms, From the Simple Phrase to the Song-Form With "Trio," For the Use of General and Special Students of Musical Structure This book undertakes no more than the systematic enumeration and exhaustive explanation of all the formal designs and methods of structural treatment in the homophonic domain of musical composition, as revealed in classical or standard writings. The student who aims to acquire the Science of composition, is expected to Imitate these designs and methods, and to look for additional illustrations and confirmations in general musical literature. This will develop skill and facility, will induce correct habits of musical thought, will enrich the mind with a fund of resources, and stimulate the imagination to increased responsiveness and activity. But, further than this, the book lays no claim to furnishing clues to the subtle Art of composition. In converting his theoretical knowledge into successful practice, - into a means to an end, - the student can appeal to no other authority than that of his own fancy, good taste, and natural or acquired judgment. The examples given for reference must be inspected, - if not totally, at least in great part. No student should hope to be entirely successful and efficient as a composer without possessing quite extensive acquaintance with the products and processes of successful writers. Therefore, the pupil must regard the conscientious examination of these carefully selected quotations, as a very significant and distinctly essential part of his study. This applies more especially to the works cited in Divisions I, II and III. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Harmony: A Treatise on the Material of Musical Composition, Its Gradual Growth and Elementary Use But if the study of harmony is to lead up to anything more than the writing of a double chant, a great many more innovations are necessary. I. The figured bass is often a formless thing. Form is to music what sense is to language. In this treatise form is discussed from the very first. It is neither presumed nor ignored. In the early work help is obtained from the analogy between metre and accent. The student begins with phrase formation, gradually building up a sentence, and finally working exercises in binary or ternary form, with regular and irregular phrase formation. Some atten tion is also paid to thematic development. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Composer's Handbook: A Guide to the Principles of Musical Composition The author's experience as a teacher has convinced him that condensed and didactic statements of facts and theories are of little use to the elementary student. Line upon line, and precept upon precept will alone avail to produce an abiding impression. Hence the general principles of composition - what the late Rev. John Curwen called the Common places of Music - have been steadily kept in view, enforced by constant reiteration, and illustrated by numerous examples from the works of past and present composers; while, to prevent the student's attention from being diverted to side issues, no attempt has been made to deal with those extraordinary and exceptional developments of music which lie beyond average attainment, nor with the exaggerated and bizarre efforts of those composers who endeavour to take music out of its proper sphere. The Table of Contents indicates the general scope of this work; but 'it may be mentioned that Cadences, which are always particularly difficult for the beginner to manage effectively, are treated with special fulness in the first four chapters. Several tables have been prepared to show exactly what cadences the older composers were in the habit of using, and also the tendencies of modern practice and it is hoped that these tables will be found useful, not only to students, but to teachers. Among other topics which have received special attention are Songs, Two-part and Three-part Writing, Pianoforte Accompaniments, Accompaniments for Strings, and Scoring for Small Orchestras. Although this is not avowedly a treatise on Musical Form, all the smaller forms of composition are fully discussed while the analyses of the larger forms (sonata, Symphony, are sufficient to point out the lines of study necessary for their more complete investigation.
