Book The Formation of Christian Doctrine

Download or read book The Formation of Christian Doctrine written by Malcolm B. Yarnell and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Formation of Christian Doctrine is a high-level academic study of the history of Christian doctrinal development. The book distinguishes at length between the scholarly term “inventio” (making explicit what is implicit in the biblical revelation) and the idea of “invention” (presenting a novelty as Christian teaching that conflicts with the biblical revelation). Specifically, The Formation of Christian Doctrine identifies biblical inerrancy as an inventio but sees the “priesthood of believers” concept as a license to believe “whatever teaching seems right to me.” Sure to be of interest in academic circles, even to those who might disagree with the author, this book will appeal to three major groups: Evangelicals in relation to the twentieth-century development of a detailed doctrine of biblical inerrancy, Baptists in light of both biblical inerrancy and the seventeenth-century development of believer’s baptism, and Roman Catholics because of their respect for tradition and interest in such a challenging conservative Protestant perspective as is found here.

Book The Christian Doctrine of the Divine Attributes

Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of the Divine Attributes written by Hermann Cremer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-05-27 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cremer's short, energetic treatise on the divine attributes was admired by both Karl Barth and Wolfhart Pannenberg. Cremer chastises the speculative flights of traditional doctrines of the divine attributes and issues a resounding summons to a more exegetically, economically, and christologically grounded account. Known primarily as a biblical scholar for his Biblico-Theological Lexicon of New Testament Greek, precursor to the monumental TDNT, Cremer shows himself here also an able systematician, with a pastor's eye for the role played by doctrine in the life of congregational and individual faith.

Book Treatise on Christian Doctrine

Download or read book Treatise on Christian Doctrine written by John Milton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 765 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Christian Doctrine: Compiled From the Holy Scriptures Alone To enter into a preliminary discussion of the doctrines or opinions contained in the present volume, seems, properly speaking, to be no necessary part of the Translator's duty. After stating, therefore, in the first place, the circumstances under which the original manuscript was discovered, and the reasons for considering it as the long lost theological work of Milton, it will be sufficient to subjoin, as briefly as possible, a few remarks chiefly relating to certain peculiarities in the following treatise, by which it is distinguished from the authors other compositions. From information communicated by Robert Lemon, sen. Esq. Deputy Keeper of His Majesty's State Papers, who has lately completed from the documents under his care an entire series of the Order-Books of the Council of State during the Interregnum, it appears that Milton retired from active official employment as Secretary for Foreign Languages, about the middle of the year 1665. The following entry occurs under the date of April 17 in that year: "The Councell resumed the debate upon the report made from the Committee of the Councell to whom it was referred to consider of the establishment of the Councell's contingencies. "Ordered. . . That the former yearly Salary of Mr. John Milton, of Two Hundred Eighty-Eight Pounds, &c., formerly charged on the Councell's contingencies, be reduced to One Hundred and Fiftie Pounds per annum, and paid to him, during his life, out of His Highness' Exchequer." This sum must have been intended as a retiring pension in consideration of past services, as it is evident from another entry, under the same date, that a successor was already appointed, at a reduced salary, to discharge the duties of the situation which Milton had previously occupied. Book The Christian Doctrine of God One Being Three Persons

Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of God One Being Three Persons written by Thomas F. Torrance and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of the twentieth-century's foremost modern Trinitarian theologians The Christian Doctrine of God remains a classic ground work for scholars and students alike. In the book Thomas F. Torrance offers a detailed study of the most profound article of the Christian faith - the Holy Trinity. Torrance adopts a holistic approach when examining the inter-relatedness of the three persons - Father, son, and Holy Spirit - and their dynamic Communion with the Being and Nature of God. Combining immense academic range with his characteristically fresh theological perspectives, Torrance builds a significant theological bridge between ancient and modern, as well as between the Roman and Protestant theology; he engages deeply with the Church Fathers and discusses the ontological nature of God. Here Torrance conveys a simple message - the doctrine of the Trinity is the doctrine of God. This Cornerstones edition includes a new introduction written by Professor Paul D. Molnar, in which Molnar sets Torrance's classic work in its modern context and considers how it continues to influence the way we think about the Trinity today.
