Book excerpt: This report summarizes the studies made to date by the Army Missile Command on the effects of the rocket jet plume on the Stability characteristics of a body of revolution with various fin configurations and at various fin positions on the body. The Mach numbers ranged from 0.2 to 2.3. A normal jet plume simulator was used to obtain the desired plume effects. This report concerns itself with those tests conducted on a 5-in. diameter, 52-in. long model, with a 3 caliber tangent ogive nose.

Book The 2002 Version of the Aeroprediction Code

Download or read book The 2002 Version of the Aeroprediction Code written by Frankie Gale Moore and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new version of the aeroprediction code (APC), the AP02, has been developed to address the requirements arising from advanced weapon concepts. The AP02 was formed by adding significant new technology and several productivity improvements to the previous version of the APC, the AP98. New technology added included 6 and 8 fin aerodynamics, improved nonlinear aerodynamics, improved pitch damping predictions, improved power-on base drag estimates, base-bleed effect on base drag estimation, improved axial force of nonaxisymmetric bodies and trailing-edge flap capability. Other improvements and productivity enhancements include an aerodynamic smoother, ballistic and three degree-of-freedom simulation modules as well as refinements for the pre- and post-processor for inputs and outputs of the AP02. Comparison of the predicted aerodynamics of the AP02 to AP98 and experimental data showed the AP02 to be slightly better than the AP98 in most cases that both codes would handle. However, due to the additional new technology incorporated into the AP02, many new options are available in the AP02 that are not available in the AP98. Therefore, the AP02 is more robust and, on average, is slightly more accurate than the AP98 in predicting aerodynamics of weapons.

Book Investigation of Plume Effects on the Stability Characteristics of a Body of Revolution with Various Fin Configurations at Transonic Speeds

Download or read book Investigation of Plume Effects on the Stability Characteristics of a Body of Revolution with Various Fin Configurations at Transonic Speeds written by R. E. DE Kuyper and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A transonic wind tunnel test was performed in the Calspan Corporation 8-Foot Transonic Wind Tunnel on a missile model with tail fins in the presence of a simulated jet plume. The test was conducted during February, 1974. The purpose of the test was to establish a correlation between the thrust level and missile longitudinal stability, and to assess the effectiveness of locating stabilizing fins forward of the model base as a means of alleviating adverse plume effects. This was the second series of tests performed with this model at Calspan. The results of the earlier test, which also included a canard effectiveness study, were previously reported. The test was conducted over a Mach number range from 0.40 to 1.25 at a condition corresponding to a wind-off static pressure of 0.5 atmospheres. Model angle of attack was varied from -4 to 12 degrees.

Book Analysis of Experiments on the Effects of Jet Plumes on Pressure Distribution Over a Cylindrical Afterbody at Transonic Speeds

Download or read book Analysis of Experiments on the Effects of Jet Plumes on Pressure Distribution Over a Cylindrical Afterbody at Transonic Speeds written by Joseph P. Nenni and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the present investigation was to obtain experimentally, the effects of various jet plume parameters on afterbody pressure distributions and to partially validate the Korst modeling procedure. Analysis of the experimental results and supplemental calculations made by the method of characteristics show that the approximate theory used by Korst, gives a good estimate of the plume shape for nozzle exist Mach number of 2.0 and below. For nozzle exit Mach numbers much in excess of 2.0, it appears desirable to include the effect of the nozzle wall boundary layer on plume shape. In addition, afterbody pressure distributions produced by a series of nozzles designed to produce the same plume shape, but with different values of the plume pliability parameter, have been compared with results from a solid plume simulator. In general, the solid plume simulator produces results that agree with the nozzles with the higher values of the plume pliability parameter at zero degrees angle of attack. The correlation deteriorates significantly, however, at five degrees angle of attack. Also, afterbody pressure distributions from model tests on the ZAP rocket motor are presented for future correlation with prototype results. (Author).
