Book A Translation of Yoga Vasishta

Download or read book A Translation of Yoga Vasishta written by K. Narayanswami Aiyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A physical, spiritual, and mental practice designed to cultivate inner peace and harmony, Yoga is a discipline that is thousands of years old. Older than any of the Abrahamic religions, Yoga continues to boast a strong following in both the East and the West. The poses of yoga are intended to channel the body and the mind together into a spirit of oneness and free the soul from its earthly concerns. K. Narayanswami Aiyer's A Translation of Yoga-Vasishta shares some of the history of Yoga, including "The Chapter on Origin," "The Chapter on Preservation," and "The Chapter on Quiescence." Practiced in India as a spiritual practice as well as a physical one, the stories of Yoga as told here are akin to the Bible stories for Christians. They share the lessons and morals of Gods and famous Yogi who come before. Each story is told as a parable - intended to reveal the trials of terrestrial concerns and the path to a higher consciousness. It is through the foibles and mistakes of others that the believers learn to work for redemption, "to the ignorant who are subject to many frailties, there will arise re-births of diverse kinds." But never fear because, "if all objects vanish through the contemplation of Jnana, the wise, oh stainless Price, say that all the unreal illusions will disappear." Aiyer's translation is a gem. With lessons from the past for the future, this is a great addition to anyone's library. Religion enthusiasts, those interested in Eastern culture, Indian culture, religious history, yoga, or the path to enlightenment will surely enjoy with one-of-a-kind document. Book Critical Studies in Indian Grammarians I

Download or read book Critical Studies in Indian Grammarians I written by Madhav Deshpande and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the historical study of the Indian grammarian tradition, a line of demarcation can often be drawn between the conformity of a system with the well-known grammar of Pāṇini and the explanatory effectiveness of that system. One element of Pāṇini’s grammar that scholars have sometimes struggled to bring across this line of demarcation is the theory of homogeneity, or sāvarṇya, which concerns the final consonants in Pāṇini’s reference catalog, as well as phonetic similarities between sounds. While modern Sanskrit scholars understand how to interpret and apply Pāṇini’s homogeneity, they still find it necessary to unravel the history of varying interpretations of the theory in subsequent grammars. Madhav Deshpande’s The Theory of Homogeneity provides a thorough account of the historical development of the theory. Proceeding first to study this conception in the Pāṇinian tradition, Deshpande then passes on to other grammatical systems. Deshpande gives attention not only to the definitions of homogeneity in these systems but also the implementation of the theory in those respective systems. Even where definitions are identical, the concept may be applied quite differently, in which cases Deshpande examines by considering the historical relationships among the various systems.

Ayurveda provides themethod for living a balanced life, for the prevention of disease and pain and for thetreatment of diseases presently thought to be incurable. Unfortunately, during the periodof British occupation of India, traditional arts, including the science of Ayurveda, wereactively discouraged; 'Vaidyas', or accomplished Ayurvedic masters, were persecutedand numerous libraries and schools were burned to the ground. Since that time of foreignoccupation, India and it's culture have slowly been recovering. But the truth is thatAyurveda still remains in a semi-dormant state, a state of hibernation, waiting for thoseearnest and perseverant students who will bring Ayurveda back to it's full capacity.Fortunately there are a few excellent texts which have been preserved from ancient times. The Charaka Samhita is such a text. Recorded several thousand years ago from theteachings of the sage Punarvasu Atreya, it is a gem of practical wisdom which remains tothis day the most respected work on Ayurveda

Download or read book The A rama System written by Patrick Olivelle and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-10-14 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lesser known and explored of the two pillars of Hinduism--=aśrama and var.na--=aśrama is the name given to a system of four distinct and legitimate ways of leading a religious life: as a celibate student, a married householder, a forest hermit, and a world renouncer. In this, the first full-length study of the =aśrama system, Olivelle uncovers its origin and traces its subsequent history. He examines in depth its relationship to other institutional and doctrinal aspects of the Brahmanical world and its position within Brahmanical theology, and assesses its significance within the history of Indian religion. Throughout, he argues that the =aśrama system is primarily a theological construct and that the system and its history should be carefully distinguished from the socio-religious institutions comprehended by the system and from their respective histories.
