Book A middle to high school transition program to reduce dropout rates among urban youth

Download or read book A middle to high school transition program to reduce dropout rates among urban youth written by Victoria L. Toth and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has indicated that ninth grade is a crucial year. Students experience a variety of changes upon entering high school, both developmentally and within their new contextual environment. When students are underprepared for the changes they encounter, the likelihood of dropping out of school is heightened. Transition programs have been shown to provide an effective solution to creating a responsive environment for the unique needs of first year high school students. Ensuring a smooth transition is particularly important for urban students in order to close the achievement gap between their higher socioeconomic status counterparts. This project reviews the participants, typical concerns of first year high school students, and the activities that have been proven to help foster a successful transition to high school. In addition, this project will compile the research explored to provide a comprehensive transition program that school counselors can implement at their school.

Book Successful Transition to High School Research Brief

Download or read book Successful Transition to High School Research Brief written by Education Partnerships, Inc. (EPI). and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What steps can be taken to assure that 8th graders make a successful transition to 9th grade? More students fail ninth grade than any other grade level. When middle school students took part in high school transition programs with a variety of different articulation activities, fewer students were retained in ninth grade. Ideally, these transition programs include activities that provide students and parents with current information about the new school, provide students with social support and opportunities for peer interaction during the transition, provide opportunities for parent involvement and bring middle school and high school personnel together to learn about one another's curriculum, special programs, requirements and expectations. School leaders can ease students' transition into high school by implementing transition programs that address the needs of students and their parents and that facilitate communication between middle school and high school teachers and support staff. Effective high school transition programs address the following key areas: (1) Providing parents and students with information about the new school; (2) Provide opportunities for peer interaction and social support; (3) Provide opportunities for parent involvement; (4) Provide opportunities for communication between middle and high school teachers and support staff; and (5) Provide academic support for incoming ninth graders. Book Preparing incoming freshmen for the academic and social changes of high school

Download or read book Preparing incoming freshmen for the academic and social changes of high school written by Hillary M Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has revealed important information about the importance of an effective transition program for eight grade students transitioning into high school. The increased rigor of high school courses, procedural struggles of a new environment, and increased social challenges often lead students to perform lower academically, turn to self-medication as a way to cope, and even drop out as a final result, when not given an effective transition into the high school. This project explores the components that are critical to a successful transition program. An effective transition program must begin to address students during the eighth grade year and continue into the ninth grade year. The components of this project have been identified by research as being an effective method of transition for students. The elements of this project are to be used as tools to execute a transition program that begins in eighth grade to address the academic challenges of high school, continues prior to the beginning of high school to address procedural and social challenges, and concludes during ninth grade to continue to support students with new academic challenges. If students feel completely supported during the transition from middle school to high school, students will be more successful in ninth grade and successive years of education.

Book Making the Move

Download or read book Making the Move written by Osiris Morales and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition from middle school to high school presents many students with challenges that affect their academic performance and overall success in their first year of high school, due to their lack of success; many students become disengaged and eventually drop out of high school before tenth grade. This study researched the major challenges ninth grade students encountered in their transition from middle school to high school, and how those challenges affected their academic performance. The study also investigated how eighth grade teachers prepared students to transition to high school and the kind of support students received in high school from their ninth grade teachers to help them adjust easily to the new environment. This study included three groups of participants: ninth grade students, eighth grade teachers, and ninth grade teachers, all participants responded to a survey created specifically for their group.

Book A Case Study

Download or read book A Case Study written by Joy Lee and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year approximately 1.3 million students dropout of high school and an estimated 40% of minority students do not graduate on time (Roybal, Thornton, & Usinger, 2014). In high school, 22% of students repeat 9th-grade classes because students fail to make a smooth transition. This gives the 9th-grade the highest enrollment rate and the highest dropout rate (McCallumore & Sparapani, 2010). In an effort to increase high school graduation rates, the Peabody County Public School District created Achievement schools, an initiative to recruit highly effective administrators, teachers and staff members to support students with the highest academic and nonacademic needs. This study examined school administrators’ perceptions of middle school students transitioning to Achievement high schools. The purpose of the case study was to examine how school administrators perceived an ideal 9th-grade transition, challenges 9th-grade students faced through transitioning, and the vision of a successful 9th-grade transitioning to an Achievement High school. This study focused on a group of Achievement high school administrators and the middle school administrators at their respective feeder schools. I utilized qualitative methods to analyze the administrators’ perceptions collected through individual interviews about their views of best practices for student transitioning. The findings of this study can contribute to the overall evaluation and aid in establishing policies and programs to assist with 9th-grade transitioning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The transition from middle school to high school has been repeatedly identified as the most pivotal point in a student's educational career. This transition period for a 9th grade student has been linked with success or failure in high school and has had great impact on whether a student attains a high school diploma ... The overwhelming number of students dropping out within the public school setting and its relationship to the transition from middle school to high school is the basis for the development of this master's project. The 9th grade can be a very pivotal time for many adolescents and this research provides practical ideas for making that pivotal time successful for freshman students."--leaf 3.
