Book excerpt: This study investigates the relationship between the missionary's incarnational bonding process and effective field adjustment, how Korean monocultural tendencies impact this incarnational bonding process, and in light of this, to examine the need for a paradigm shift toward the development of field-based missionary training. The notion of the missionary's incarnational bonding process has been of great concern in my own personal life, as well as in the cross-cultural missionary world. This study uses the Brewsters' concept of bonding as a starting point and develops it further in order to enhance the effectiveness of cross-cultural adjustment and develop a field-based training model. This study consists of three parts. The first part investigates and develops the incarnational bonding theory from Biblical and missiological perspectives. The second part explores the effect of culture--the missionary's own and that of his receptors'--on cross-cultural adjustment. Based upon the discoveries in the second part, the third part develops a model of field-based training that is relevant for missionaries, particularly those from a Korean background of monocultural, monolingual and monoethnic homogeneity. I utilized mixed methodologies in my research design, taking a qualitative and quantitative approach to collect the necessary data in order to investigate three components: the missionary's effective incarnational bonding process and its relationship to cultural adjustment; how the missionary's own culture and that of his receptors affects the process; and, finally, what sort of innovative field-based training model would most effectively enhance the missionary's cross-cultural communication. The research produced three findings: incarnational bonding is a phenomenon that is necessary for and critical to cross-cultural missionary endeavors; the missionary's understanding of his own culture is even more significant and applicable to the incarnational bonding process in the context of a cross-cultural setting; and a field-based missionary training model must be developed further in order to enhance the carrying out of the Great Commission.

Despite this biblical commission, it is still an unfinished task. As leaders of local churches, pastors play a crucial part in this endeavor. Pastoral leadership principles have varied widely throughout history, yet it is interesting to discover the similarities between pastoral leadership principles practiced by John Chrysostom (AD 347-407) in Antioch and Constantinople, and Won Sang Lee (1937-) in Washington, DC. Despite ministering 1600 years apart, both pastors share the same core values: care for people, Christ-like character, biblical preaching, and world missions. This suggests that continued emphasis on these principles will play a significant role in fulfilling the Great Commission, independent of time and place.

Book excerpt: This study details a history of the pre-field missionary training institutes of the Korean Church, parlicularly evaluating the influence of the missionary training arm of Global Mission Society (GMS), and presenting a model of missionary training for the next generation of the Korean Church. The historical scope of this study includes Korean missionary institutes established before 1990: EastWest Center for Missions Research and Development (EWCMRD), Global Missionary Training Institute (GMTl) and The Paul Mission (TPM). Detailed therein are the lives of the founders of those institutes, including David J. Cho, Taiwoong Lee and Donghwee Lee. The research analyzes characteristics, curricula, trainers, strengths and weaknesses of these institutes. In addition, this study describes the historical development of the views of GMS and Missionary Training Institute of Global Mission Society (MTIGMS), and evaluates the influence of MTIGMS on the rnissionaries who received its training. Through interview and survey methodology, data was collected and analyzed. This study presents general trends and issues in world missions, and particularly researches the trends and issues of Korea, the Korean church and its missios. From this evaluation, a specific recommendations are offered as a tool for the future development of MTIGMS. Part I describes a history of pre-field missionary training by the Korean church prior to 1990, presents a history of GMS, and traces the history of MTIGMS. Part II evaluates the influence of MTIGMS on its missionaries by applying the resurts from Ethnographic interviews (El) and a survey that were conducted. Part III describes current trends and issues in the world, in Korea, and in Korean church missions.
