Book The Petroleum System

Download or read book The Petroleum System written by Geological Survey (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations about porosity in petroleum reservoir rocks are discussed by Schmoker and Gautier. Pollastro discusses the uses of clay minerals as exploration tools that help to elucidate basin, source-rock, and reservoir history. The status of fission-track analysis, which is useful for determining the thermal and depositional history of deeply buried sedimentary rocks, is outlined by Naeser. The various ways workers have attempted to determine accurate ancient and present-day subsurface temperatures are summarized with numerous references by Barker. Clayton covers three topics: (1) the role of kinetic modeling in petroleum exploration, (2) biological markers as an indicator of depositional environment of source rocks and composition of crude oils, and (3) geochemistry of sulfur in source rocks and petroleum. Anders and Hite evaluate the current status of evaporite deposits as a source for crude oil.

Book Australian Petroleum Accumulations Report 7 Browse Basin

Download or read book Australian Petroleum Accumulations Report 7 Browse Basin written by Stephen Robert Le Poidevin and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Browse Basin Australian Petroleum Accumulations (APA) report provides a summary of petroleum discoveries and significant hydrocarbon shows found within the basin up until May 2014. This report differs slightly from previous reports in this series in that it documents `inferred¿ accumulations, whereas previous APA¿s reported a `demonstrated discovery¿; that is, a discrete, measured recovery of petroleum from a test undertaken in an exploration well. The Browse Basin lies offshore from the remote Western Australia Kimberley region and hosts vast reserves of gas, some of which are rich in condensate, making it Australia¿s next major conventional liquefied natural gas (LNG) province on the North West Shelf. A recent upgrade of the super-giant Ichthys gas accumulation by operator Inpex estimated that the field holds 12.8 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas. This accumulation is also estimated to contain 527 million barrels (mmbbl) of condensate, making it the largest hydrocarbon accumulation with recoverable liquids found in Australia since the discovery of the Gippsland Basin and Barrow Island oil fields in the 1960s, as well as being one of the country¿s top five gas fields. The Browse Basin continues to be a focus of exploration in which both international companies, such as Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Inpex, Shell and Sinopec, and the Australian explorers BHP Billiton, Nexus Energy, Santos and Woodside Energy, are capitalising on LNG opportunities." -- Online abstract.

Book Petroleum Systems of the Tethyan Region

Download or read book Petroleum Systems of the Tethyan Region written by Lisa Marie Marlow and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume is intended to generate ideas for the future exploration of immature and mature basins across the Tethyan Region. From the Paleozoic to the Cenozoic, the Arabian Plate, North Africa and parts of Southern Eurasia, were on the margin of a series of Tethys seaways, Proto-Tethys, Paleo-Tethys, and Neo-Tethys. These areas evolved together and as a result they have numerous similarities in their tectono-stratigraphic history and petroleum systems. These similarities could be used to extrapolate proven petroleum systems to underexplored areas and lead to hydrocarbon discoveries. The back cover illustrates the countries that evolved along the Tethyan Region in their present day location. Countries covered in this volume are outlined."--Page 4 of cover.

Book Petroleum Geology Inventory of Australia s Offshore Frontier Basins

Download or read book Petroleum Geology Inventory of Australia s Offshore Frontier Basins written by Jennifer Totterdell and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Oil and gas discoveries in Australia's offshore basins are concentrated on the North West Shelf (Northern Carnarvon, Browse and Bonaparte basins) and Bass Strait (Gippsland, Otway and Bass basins). While discoveries have been made in a few regions outside these areas (e.g. Perth Basin), a large proportion of Australia's offshore basins remain exploration frontiers. However, the decline in oil production from the North West Shelf and Bass Strait basins since 2000 has led to an increasing exploration interest in the frontier basins. In order to improve our knowledge of the offshore frontiers and encourage exploration to these areas, from 2003-2011, Geoscience Australia was funded by the Australian Government to undertake a series of pre-competitive data acquisition and analyses programs in frontier basins around the Australian margin. This Record presents a comprehensive inventory of the geology, petroleum systems, exploration status and data coverage for 35 frontier basins, sub-basins and provinces, that draws on the results of those pre-competitive data programs, as well as exploration results and the geoscience literature. The Record also provides an assessment of the critical science and exploration questions and issues for each area. The results of each basin assessment are summarised in a prospectivity ranking. The availability of data and level of knowledge in each area is reflected in a confidence rating for that ranking. While the prospectivity of some areas is widely acknowledged to be high (e.g. Ceduna Sub-basin), the perception of prospectivity in many basins is negatively affected by the amount or quality of data available; in these basins, the acquisition of new data or targeted research could make a significant difference to the understanding of petroleum potential and likelihood of success. Therefore, recommendations for future work that could assist in addressing key knowledge or data gaps are included in each basin assessment." -- Online abstract.
