Book excerpt: The relationship between eternity and time is a common subject for theologians and philosophers. What difference does it make for this discussion that God became man and inhabited time in Jesus Christ? In God’s Time for Us, James J. Cassidy examines the theology of Karl Barth to show that God is our Father who does not neglect us for lack of time; he is the God who has time to be with us. God also quite literally has time in his own being by virtue of the incarnation. Cassidy shows that Barth seeks a rapprochement between eternity and time, which is overcome by Jesus Christ. There is today a resurgence in interest in the theology of Barth, especially among evangelicals. Yet Barth is often read without discernment and discussed in churches without full understanding. Cassidy illuminates his thought so evangelicals can make a better, more well-informed appraisal of the man and his theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korean peninsula, divided for more than fifty years, is stuck in a time warp. Millions of troops face one another along the Demilitarized Zone separating communist North Korea and capitalist South Korea. In the early 1990s and again in 2002-2003, the United States and its allies have gone to the brink of war with North Korea. Misinterpretations and misunderstandings are fueling the crisis. "There is no country of comparable significance concerning which so many people are ignorant," American anthropologist Cornelius Osgood said of Korea some time ago. This ignorance may soon have fatal consequences. North Korea, South Korea is a short, accessible book about the history and political complexites of the Korean peninsula, one that explores practical alternatives to the current US policy: alternatives that build on the remarkable and historic path of reconciliation that North and South embarked on in the 1990s and that point the way to eventual reunification.

Book Godly Directions in a Time of Plague

Download or read book Godly Directions in a Time of Plague written by C. Matthew McMahon and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2020-04-17 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This very timely and advantageous work is truly a godly help to Christ’s church, a present help in a time of plague. It is filled with godly directions from various authors who took time to thoughtfully set down specific biblical directions, pleading with the people of God to forsake sin, and follow Christ’s prescription for holiness and righteousness. These authors are all of one mind, though they lived at different times over a span of almost 200 years. This is because all godly directions taken from careful Scriptural study will always end up in the same place. It is true, each writer deals with various texts, from various angles. But, still, their conclusions are the same, and they all offer the church today godly directions that will deliver the church from under the heavy hand of God’s judgments. The authors are well known to those who have taken an interest in the preachers of old, and in times of reformation. The works included have been chosen to be helpful, not overbearing. They are, however, clear in their content, though more examples could certainly be added (having whole books written on this subject of the plague). There are four sermons, one by John Hooper (on Mark 1:15) which is a shortened homily, a sermon by Lancelot Andrewes (on Psa. 106:29–30), one by John Owen (on 2 Timothy 3:1) and one by Thomas Manton (on Psalm 119:67). There is an extended prayer given by William Crashaw (which is amazing and experimentally helpful) coupled by an exhortation given by him about the plague, as well as an extended exhortation by Henry Burton on self-denial and humiliation (on Luke 9:23). Finally, Thomas Draxe sets down a series of simple questions and answers to the difficulty of a plague and how the godly should conduct themselves. In all of these the church around the world would do well to heed their godly directions in this time, that God would hear from heaven, and forgive their sin, and remember his covenant for their good.

Book From Riches to Rags at a Time of Prosperity

Download or read book From Riches to Rags at a Time of Prosperity written by Frederick Zimmerman and published by F & J Zimmerman Co. This book was released on 2011-08-05 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the framework of an increasingly troubled world, this manuscript presents a series of essays written over a twenty-year period offering some practical, non-partisan suggestions as to how our country, and other countries like it can pull together to improve the situations of our citizens, our nation, and our communities. The book suggests that the solutions to the problems we face do not fit neatly into any one political camp, but instead require innovation, system redesign, and fair mindedness on the part of both politicians and citizens. Informed world citizens are demanding far more objective analyses of our policies, our actions, and the values we employ in pursuing the policies we do. Should those of us in leadership fail to provide those valuable insights, the world is likely to deprive us of our leadership role. The title, From Riches to Rags at a Time of Prosperity, was purposely chosen. There is still time for us to modify our behavior. But, if we misread or ignore world events, we will be poorer as the time available for improvement is quite finite. The United States is currently the world's largest debtor by a substantial margin. Our prosperity is largely based on the rapid depletion of liquid fossil fuels which are likely to be virtually fully exhausted this century. Our education system is sub-par. Our retirement promises are vastly in excess of what we can afford. Our environment is eroding. Though most US citizens are comparatively prosperous at the moment, we are gradually transitioning to much less prosperous circumstances From Riches to Rags at a Time of Prosperity. The book is divided into eight major parts. The Introduction includes a brief history of some of the earlier writings in the field of management with particular emphasis on our responsibilities as managers. Part Two deals with the economy and what we may have to do to sustain prosperity for the world's citizens. Part Three includes some essays written in response to the euphoria of the stock markets. part Four deals with manufacturing and its role in an integrated society. Part Five discusses the role of business management in a wholesome society along with some suggestions and caveats for the practice of management. Part Six reviews the importance of education and the responsibilities of those of us who are educators. Part Seven deals with a few of the nation's pressing public policy questions. Part Eight closes with a question: Will real leadership emerge?

Book A Time to Build

Download or read book A Time to Build written by Yuval Levin and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading conservative intellectual argues that to renew America we must recommit to our institutions Americans are living through a social crisis. Our politics is polarized and bitterly divided. Culture wars rage on campus, in the media, social media, and other arenas of our common life. And for too many Americans, alienation can descend into despair, weakening families and communities and even driving an explosion of opioid abuse. Left and right alike have responded with populist anger at our institutions, and use only metaphors of destruction to describe the path forward: cleaning house, draining swamps. But, as Yuval Levin argues, this is a misguided prescription, rooted in a defective diagnosis. The social crisis we confront is defined not by an oppressive presence but by a debilitating absence of the forces that unite us and militate against alienation. As Levin argues, now is not a time to tear down, but rather to build and rebuild by committing ourselves to the institutions around us. From the military to churches, from families to schools, these institutions provide the forms and structures we need to be free. By taking concrete steps to help them be more trustworthy, we can renew the ties that bind Americans to one another.

Book A Time for Change

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many professional ministers struggle at some point with the desire to pursue another career. For those at such a place on their journey, this book poses questions, offers practical suggestions gathered from other ministers who have traveled this path, and shares insights from the authors' own experiences of career change. The authors emphasize two principles. First, entertaining the possibility of leaving professional ministry is not to be condemned or viewed as a sign of failure; rather, it should be accepted as part of the spiritual journey. Second, a new career apart from the institutional church does not mean one is leaving the ministry, but simply that one is changing the mode of expressing that ministry.
