Excerpt: ...destructive than alcohol, still, whether it is smoked or chewed, it has an extremely harmful effect upon men who are engaged in severe physical exertion. "My experience leads me to take a decided stand against the use of stimulants and narcotics of all kinds, from tea and coffee to tobacco and alcoholic drinks. It must be a sound principle that one should live in as natural and simple a way as possible, and especially when the life is a life of severe exertion in an extremely cold climate. The idea that one gains by stimulating body and mind by artificial means, betrays, in my opinion, not only ignorance of the simplest physiological laws, but also a want of experience." As to spirits, he says, "There is no sufficient pretext for using them, and the best course is to banish alcoholic drinks from the list of necessaries." The explorer gave it as his opinion that the strict prohibition of the use of brandy in Greenland is absolutely necessary to prevent extermination of the natives, and adds: "Not only should the sale of brandy be prohibited, but also of coffee, tobacco, and other noxious products. It took us a long time to make them acquire the taste for them. On the west coast we have been unhappily successful in begetting the taste for coffee." Cocoa Poisonous to Cattle Q. Is the theobromin found in cocoa actually poisonous? A. Yes. A. V. Lund, of Copenhagen (Experiment Station Record) has shown by carefully conducted experiments that the theobromin contained in cocoa is a poison to cattle. The cocoa bean contains a large percentage of oil. This is separated, and the residue has been offered as a cattle feed. The Danish government instituted an investigation as to the wholesomeness of this product as a...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Without Medicine At breakfast I acceded finally to my host's wish to send for his own physician, with reluctance it must be confessed; and it was not long before the gentle man in question made his appearance in the pleasant drawing-room. He was lean, muscular, red-bearded - this English doc tor - and plain spoken beyond anything to which the ears of American patients are accustomed. I told him of my sleep lessness and loss of strength and shortness of breath, and how two different sorts of headaches which had tormented me at intervals for many years had now joined forces with a new and formidable ally, a heavy, dull pain in the back of the head, and among them had obliged me to give up my business and left me little peace day or night. Doubtless to his experi enced eye my sunken cheek and lack lustre eye spoke as unmistakably as my words. He inquired, however, about my habits of life and work. The quest for health and happiness has converted the sci ence of psychology into the most popular of the modern sciences. Great movements like the Em manuel Church Movement of Boston, the work under Bishop Fallows of Chicago, and similar movements in some of the larger churches in New York and Brooklyn, numerous mental heal ing and metaphysical clubs, as well as hundreds of smaller clubs and classes for the study of psychic phenomena, have come into existence within a few months. Many of these movements are within the Christian Church. Their leaders have assumed that the work of healing functional disorders, as well as moral and spiritual weaknesses, be longs to the Christian minister and as such ought to be made a part of the work of the Church. Book The Laws of Life and Health Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Laws of Life and Health Classic Reprint written by Alexander Bryce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laws of Life and Health A healthy organism is one which can adapt itself and go on adapting itself - both in structure and function, to its surroundings; and Of all organised beings man displays the greatest ability to adjust himself to his environment. The human family has the power to remain in perfect health in the coldest of Arctic regions and in the hottest of tropical zones; the highest of mountains and the lowest of valleys are compatible with health within limits. This implies that a healthy frame is one which has a good construction, capacity for endurance, self-control (not only physical but mental and emotional), and ability to resist all sorts of injurious influences. The actual signs, however, of this condition are SO illusory and so liable to misinterpretation that it Is wise to fall back upon a more general definition, and probably the best is, that health is the harmonious adaptation of the body to its environment. This fulfils every requirement, and is in accordance with the Spencerian doctrine that life is the continual adjustment of inner relations to outer relations. Health and disease are different aspects Of the same body, definite results flowing from definite conduct, just as good and evil in the moral world have the same physical substratum and one or the other will arise according to the actions Of the individual. Download or read book Diet in Health and Disease Classic Reprint written by Julius Friedenwald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 924 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diet in Health and Disease The continued appreciation of the profession as evidenced by their using this book has added greatly to the endeavor to make the fifth edition of more value than the preceding ones. There are scarcely any subjects in medicine that have received the same amount of attention of recent years as dietetics and the study of nutrition. The literature is voluminous and it would neither be possible nor profitable to try to include everything that has been brought forward. There are many differences of opinion among authorities on many questions which can only be settled by future study and in many cases the views expressed are diametrically op posed. Much of our knowledge on nutrition is fragmentary and the exact value of many contributions cannot be estimated until further investigations have been made. Dietetics has always been a sub jcet much influenced by fads and fancies and much of the literature has little value in consequence. The authors have endeavored to give fully the various facts relat ing to the composition of foods, to indicate as far as possible in the space of one volume the scientific basis, when there is any for the various diets and. To give at the same time practical directions and diet lists which can be used without extensive training.
