Book Simulation and Thermodynamic Analysis of Extended Expansion on a Concept Rotary Engine Including Its Effects on Fuel Efficiency

Download or read book Simulation and Thermodynamic Analysis of Extended Expansion on a Concept Rotary Engine Including Its Effects on Fuel Efficiency written by Denis Allemant Andre and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes a novel method for extended expansion in a rotary combustion engine running ordinary gasoline to analyze the effects on fuel efficiency and emissions. The engine consists of a toroidal-shaped piston that rotates around a drum to expand and evacuate the hot gas. There are several problems with today's internal combustion engines or IC engines. The current IC engines do not always have the necessary internal volume to expand the hot gases to near atmospheric pressure, and since the whole process of compression, combustion, and expansion happen within the same space, excess heat builds up and increases emissions of nitric oxides and nitrogen dioxide. The proposed solution is to redesign the IC engine as to supply greater expansion volume and to separate the combustion and exhaust areas. With the concept rotary engine, it is hoped that these issues will be minimized in ways that traditional IC engines are unable. This thesis is a work in five parts. Chapter one covers a strong literature review on fuel injection, fuel air mixing, the combustion process and IC engine emissions. Comparative review is done with previous work and engine dimensions are based off of existing designs. Chapter two serves as a data review for fuel injection along with a preliminary thermodynamic review on the concept engine and the effects extended expansion has on combustion rates and emissions. Iteration is done by choosing different combustion temperatures and compression ratios as to best design the concept engine. Chapter three covers the written code to simulate both fuel injection and the resulting combustion process. The fuel injection includes fuel atomization, spray penetration, evaporation rate and average droplet diameter within the combustion chamber. After injection has been modeled and validated with literature, combustion can be studied. The combustion analysis focuses on the temperature, pressure and emissions during the engine cycle. Collected data is compared to a traditional IC engine using similar air fuel ratios. Chapter four validates the code written for chapter three using a simulation software called KIV A-3. Using this program, data for fuel injection, combustion and emissions are generated and plotted, which is used to compare to the code written in MATLAB. Finally chapter five is the conclusions, where recommendations and future work is discussed.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Externally Heated Valve Engine

Download or read book Externally Heated Valve Engine written by Zbyszko Kazimierski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on a novel approach for generating mechanical energy from different, external heat sources using the body of a typical piston engine with valves. By presenting simple yet effective numerical models, the authors show how this new approach, which combines existing internal combustion technology with a lubrication system, is able to offer an economic solution to the problem of mechanical energy generation in piston engines. Their results also show that a stable heat generation process can be guaranteed outside of the engine. The book offers a detailed report on physical and numerical models of 4-stroke and 2-stroke versions of the EHVE together with different models of heat exchange, valves and results of their simulations. It also delivers the test results of an engine prototype run in laboratory conditions. By presenting a novel theoretical framework and providing readers with extensive knowledge of both the advantages and challenges of the method, this book is expected to inspire academic researchers, advanced PhD students and professionals in their search for more effective solutions to the problem of renewable energy generation.
