Download or read book A Theory of Time and Space Classic Reprint written by Alfred Arthur Robb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Theory of Time and Space HE introduction to the present volume was first published in in substantially the form here reproduced. The plan there outlined is here carried out in detail, and, although much remains to be done along similar lines, yet the present work is fairly complete in itself. The special object here aimed at has been to Show that spacial relations may be analyzed in terms of the time relations of before and after, and the demonstration of this thesis has been carried out up to the stage of introducing coordinates, leaving further developments for a future volume. The present work is the outcome of an endeavour to get rid of certain obscurities in connection with some of the fundamental parts of Physical Science. Thus the meaning ordinarily attached to the equality of time intervals. And of lengths, although sufficiently precise for the ordinary purposes of daily life, will yet be found to be somewhat vague when examined more closely. Again, although the idea of acceleration plays such an important part in Dynamics, yet, so far as the writer is aware, no satisfactory definition has hitherto been given of what we mean when we say that a particle is unaccelerated. Book The Absolute Relations of Time and Space Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Absolute Relations of Time and Space Classic Reprint written by A. A. Robb and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Absolute Relations of Time and Space At the meeting of the British Association in 1902, Lord Rayleigh gave a paper entitled "Does motion through the ether cause double refraction?" in which he described some experiments which seemed to indicate that the answer was in the negative. I recollect that on this occasion Professor Larmor was asked whether he would expect any such effect and he replied that he did not expect any. In the discussion which followed reference was made to the null results of all attempts to detect uniform motion through the ether and to the way in which things seemed to conspire together to give these null results. The impression made on me by this discussion was: that in order properly to understand what happened, it would be necessary to be quite clear as to what we mean by equality of lengths, etc., and I decided that I should try at some future time to carry out an analysis of this subject. I am not certain that I had not some idea of doing this even before the British Association meeting, but in any case, the inspiration came from Sir Joseph Larmor, either at this meeting or on some previous occasion while attending his lectures. Some years later I proceeded to try to carry out this idea, and while-engaged in endeavouring to solve the problem, I heard for the first time of Einstein's work. From the first I felt that Einstein's standpoint and method of treatment were unsatisfactory, though his mathematical transformations might be sound enough, and I decided to proceed in my own way in search of a suitable basis for a theory. In particular I felt strongly repelled by the idea that events could be simultaneous to one person and not simultaneous to another; which was one of Einstein's chief contentions. This seemed to destroy all sense of the reality of the external world and to leave the physical universe no better than a dream, or rather, a nightmare. Book Space and Time in Contemporary Physics an Introduction to the Theory of Gravitation Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Space and Time, in Contemporary Physics, an Introduction to the Theory of Gravitation Probably no physical theory in recent times has given rise to more discussion amongst philosophers than the principle of relativity. One school of thought agrees that physicists may well be led to recast their notions of space and time in the light of experimental results. Another school, however, is of opinion that these questions are no concern of the physicists, who should make their theories fit the philosophers' conceptions of these fundamental units. The theory of relativity consists of two parts, the old special theory, and the more recent general theory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur Stanley Eddington is one of the most influential astrophysicists of the 20th century. Born in Great Britain, he is credited as being a leading teacher of Einstein's theory of relativity in the English world. He is considered a great philosopher of science, and was a boisterous advocate for the popularization of science until his death in 1944. This book, Space, Theory, also titled Space, Time, and Gravitation: An Outline of the General Relativity Theory is one of his most important and well-read books. Originally published in 1920, this book was written at a time when information from Germany would have been limited, and thus many of Einstein's theories had not yet been completely digested by the Western world. The purpose of Space, Theory is to present the theory of relativity to those without a strong scientific or mathematical background. While mathematical equations do make frequent appearances throughout the text, they are complemented by detailed textual explanations and real-world examples. The book is presented in a logical manner. The first chapter discusses the very nature of geometry, and how Euclidean geometry is not sufficient for a discussion of the theory of relativity. One must always consider the dimension of time, Eddington argues. It is this discussion that sets the stage for the remainder of the theories presented in this book. Almost one hundred years after it was written, there are still few better books introducing Einstein's theory of relativity to the layman. Eddington is gifted in taking immensely complex theories and breaking them down to a level that demonstrates their significance in every day life. If you are at all interested in astrophysics, Space, Theory is a must read. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Theory of the Universe A geological truth must command our assent as powerfully as that of the existence of our own minds. President Hitchcock says: Geology is not indeed insensible to the displays of the divine character which are exhibited on the present theatre of the world. Indeed, she distinctly recognizes the act which is now passing as the most perfect of all. Yet this scene of the great drama she regards as only one of the units of a similar series of changes that have gone by, or will hereafter come; the chain stretches so far into the eternity that is past and the eternity that is to come, that the extremities are lost to mortal Vision. Book Relativity the Special and General Theory

Download or read book Relativity the Special and General Theory written by Albert Einstein and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of a master, Relativity, the Special and the General Theory: A Popular Exposition, Volume One is Albert Einstein's own attempt to present his theories of relativity to non-physicists. The book is composed of three parts. Part one presents the Special Theory of Relativity and the intimate connection of space and time (spacetime, or "ST"). Part two highlights the General Theory of Relativity, in which Einstein argues that space and time are not absolute and are modified by gravitational forces. In part three, Einstein applies these theories to a consideration of the universe as a whole, with specific discussion about Newton's Law and a sketch of the structure of space according to the General Theory of Relativity. The book frequently refers to an analogy involving a man on a train and a man on and embankment, to which Einstein applies his theories to present varying outcomes. These analogies greatly enhance the layperson's understanding. Einstein's stated goal in Relativity, the Special and the General Theory was to "present the ideas in the simplest and most intelligible form," and in this regard he was largely successful. One does not need to have an understanding of the mathematical principles of theoretical physics in order to read this book. However, that is not to say this book is not a challenging read. The layman will likely find some of the passages quite dense, and the mathematical calculations that are presented may be difficult to follow. While this will not greatly impact one's surface level understanding of Einstein's theories, one's ability to fully grasp the theories presented will depend on their scientific and mathematical background. Relativity, the Special and the General Theory is highly recommended. It is an important work by one of the world's great thinkers, and it presents complex theories in an accessible manner. This book is a worthy addition to anybody's library. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Theory of Relativity Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Theory of Relativity Classic Reprint written by L. Silberstein and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Relativity This introduction to the Theory of Relativity is based in part upon a course of lectures delivered in University College, London, 1912-13. The treatment, however, has been made much more systematical, and the subject matter has been extended very con siderably; but, throughout, the attempt has been made to confine the reader's attention to matters of prime importance. With this aim in view, many particular problems even of great interest have not been touched upon. On the other hand, it seemed advantageous to trace the connexion of the modern theory with the theories and ideas that preceded it. And the first three chapters, therefore, are devoted to the fundamental ideas of space and time underlying classical physics, and to the electromagnetic theories of Maxwell, hertz-heaviside and Lorentz, from the last of which Einstein's theory of relativity was directly derived. In the exposition of the theory itself free use has been made not only of the matrix method of representation employed by Minkowski, but even more of the language of quaternions. Very little indeed of these mathematical methods is required to follow the exposition, and this little is given in Chapter V., in a form which will be at once accessible to those acquainted with the elements of the ordinary vector algebra. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Relativity: A New View of the Universe There is no need that I should point out that the conceptual universe of science, while in some mysterious way it parallels the real universe, is totally unlike it. Matter, molecules, atoms, corpuscles, electrons, the ether, motion, force, energy, space, and time do not exist actually and really as we sense them, nor do they actu ally and really have the qualities with which we endow them. We know nothing at all about the real world, and these things of which we talk so learnedly are merely devices and symbols which enable us to talk about reality. Euclid's world of points and lines and planes is clearly a conceptual world; you cannot make it concrete. As soon as you attempt to do so, as when you put a 'point' upon the blackboard, it vanishes, for your point has magnitude. We make use of a Euclidean terminology and a mechanistic mode of reasoning only because we have found from experience that they facilitate our reasoning. They are the tools with which we do our work. They are fitted to our minds, as Bergson has pointed out, because the mind is built geometrically and is suited to deal with the outside surfaces of things only. Time and space as we feel them are entirely different. From time and space as they are measured by clocks and foot rules, as we saw above. The result is that we are called upon from time to time to change our ways of thinking. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
