Book Somewhere Between the Stem and the Fruit

Download or read book Somewhere Between the Stem and the Fruit written by Gwen Frost and published by Broadstone Books. This book was released on 2020-07 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Women's Studies. Young Adult. Somewhere between the stem and the fruit is that paradoxical nexus, the point that is both connection and separation, from where you came, to what you are becoming, the scene of the severing, the letting go, the stepping away, the necessary violence and the radical isolation required to be oneself, wholly. And, perhaps, holy. "The poems are written / before they occur to me," Gwen Frost declares at the conclusion of her shattering first collection. "Something about a scar, something about a hymn." She says that poetry saved her life, making this volume a document of that on-going process of healing, and a gift and a hope for others on the same journey. Foremost, it is a document of a contemporary young woman negotiating her way through a perilous world. "Turns out, there are a million different ways to kill a girl," she observes in "Watch," a poem that references Hitchcock's advice to "torture the women" in order to make a popular film, and by extension the misogynistic voyeurism that fetishizes violence against women. This book documents more than a few of those ways, and nowhere more chillingly than in the poem "sticking heads in the sand," in which the query "How was your summer?" follows up almost casually with another question, "What was your rapist's name?" In the inventory of anticipated experience for a young woman, "summer love and sexual assault / adventures and attacks" go hand in hand, "heads pushed into sand" both an act of violence and an act of willful forgetting. Gwen Frost won't forget, and won't let us forget. She is fiercely self-examining and self-revealing, admitting her chief fear is "what I am capable of, I am afraid / that I could kill a man, / and I am afraid / that I might like it." In lieu of this (perhaps understandable) act of violence, she exorcises and expiates through her verse. In the process, she might save us along with herself. She concludes that she "will write one, unshareable poem, / and I will let it die with me, simple and / forever, folded neatly in my throat." This is her one prediction that we must hope is untrue, for we need her to write many, many more poems, and to share them for many years to come.

Book excerpt: Back in the 90's, a close friend was reading the introduction to what would later become my first book of poetry. He made the suggestion that it would be nice to have some kind of explanation for the poem, like a summary that helped put the poem into some sort of context for the reader. Little did I know just how much that one decision would come to define my work for everything I have accomplished since then. I've found that people either love or hate the prelude that accompanies each poem - it's that simple. For some, it provides some kind of insight, which helps them understand the frame of mind I was in when I wrote it. For others, poetry is a way to find something in the words that takes you to a place that only your mind can define. The introductions only detract from the words in the poem that follows. Regardless of which person you are, this collection of poetry is for you. This book covers a wide range of emotions and contains a myriad of poems that were written over the past twenty-five years. You will find some of them are very disturbing, and if you are one of the people who prefer to read the introductions first, you might even learn a few things about me, or these poems, that you never wanted to hear.

Book excerpt: At the tender age of ninety, my dearest wish has been to publish my remaining poems before I depart this world, and so I register my name on the list of published poets, thus avoiding my life’s work from disappearing in the midst of time. My grandmother on my father’s side wrote poetry, so I guess I inherited from her this wonderful gift. Unfortunately, she didn’t publish her work so when she died, her poems died with her. Sadly, I didn’t get the chance or opportunity to read any of her work. What a loss! So, dear reader, I trust you will enjoy the words of my heart, mind, and soul—happy reading!

Book excerpt: Collecting memories is inevitable. As human beings, each one of us goes through life experiencing events, feelings, and sometimes tragedies. Some of the poems in this collection express the emotion felt at such times by the author. Some pieces convey whimsy and fun, whereas others travel to mundane places, such as garage sales, childhood memories, scary nights, and days gone by. Altogether this collection offers the reader time to unwind and enjoy.

Book No Girls No Telephones

Download or read book No Girls No Telephones written by Brittany Cavallaro and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Brittany Cavallaro and Rebecca Hazelton began with the proposition that the opposite of a dream song might be waking speech. Or a sleepless anthem. Or wakeful silence. Then they reversed that notion, and reversed it again. Through an intrepid, always devoted, often cheeky engagement with John Berryman's The Dream Songs, the 26 poems in NO GIRLS NO TELEPHONES strike out for an unmapped horizon where ruined fairy stories, dreams, and self-deception all collide in a perfect storm of "the possibility of Past and Perfect" and "the certainty of the Now and New." These poems are no mere act of homage. Suggestive of the brittle aspirations, illusions, and delusions that permeate our everyday lives, NO GIRLS NO TELEPHONES invites us into a world where, "naïve on the rim / of a glass teacup," men and women exist at odds with one other and with a frighteningly indifferent, fiercely beautiful world.

Book excerpt: Through changes in my life came particulars in writing. Amusing myself with presuming self-confidence, yet peeking into what may lie ahead in years passing quickly came Grey hair as On the other side preceded a space where I once strolled as a much younger lady and carried inside all this time. With the dizzying, up in the air, Can you cook, a vehicle boiling with me inside it to viewing a remembrance of years past in the Italian village surrounded by the big city where I grew up in They were there. I can vision it today and odors that leave with me as I walked through the door. As some of my poems seem a collage of a large, colored puzzle, they have met as a quilt half way through a journey not easily put together. Such poems from my heart, such as Frozen steps, Pink days, and many others, I have a heartfelt passion for always in my love, for homie.
