This book was released on 2019-08-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilf Hildebrandt carefully explores the meaning of "the Spirit" in the Old Testament. He examines the role of God's Spirit in creation, in the establishment and preservation of God's people, in prophecy, and in Israel's leadership. He unveils the central role that the Spirit plays in creatively bringing about the directives of God. Through the Spirit, God brings order out of chaos, ushers the invisible into reality, makes a separation between the sacred and the profane, enables specific people to meet particular needs, and supersedes natural laws. This work sheds light on the Spirit of God in both the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Book The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit

Download or read book The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit written by George Smeaton and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2013-05-11 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Smeaton (1814–-89) was a theologian in the Free Church of Scotland, and a contemporary of Robert Murray McCheyne and the brothers Andrew and Horatius Bonar. He is best known for his twin volumes, "Christ's Doctrine of the Atonement" and "The Apostles' Doctrine of the Atonement." In "The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit" Smeaton brings biblical, theological and historical light to bear on the following topics: The Personality and Procession of the Holy Spirit The Work of the Spirit in the Anointing of Christ The Work of the Holy Spirit in Connection with Revelation and Inspiration The Spirit’s Regenerating Work on the Individual The Spirit of Holiness The Work of the Holy Spirit in the Church Writes Smeaton, "Previous to His resurrection Christ had been the receiver of the Spirit, and the Spirit was mainly limited to Christ’s own Person. With His resurrection the day came when He showed that the great result of His atoning death was the power of bestowing the Spirit upon others, a blessing so momentous that it may be described as that in which all other blessings are included. This is the grandest display of Christ’s exaltation—the culminating point,— arguing at once reward and divine dignity. For no mere servant could occupy the position of conferring upon others the gift of the Spirit, who is a divine Person. He only who had put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself, and who had the Spirit to bestow, could exercise the authority of sending Him. The Spirit was given by the risen Christ to equip His ministers and to be the all-directing as well as sanctifying power in the kingdom of heaven which was now set up, as had been expressly promised by the Old Testament prophets and by the Lord Himself (Ps. lxviii. 19; John xvi. 16)."

Download or read book Practicing the Power written by Sam Storms and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible teaches us that we are to be filled with God's Spirit and that God's presence and grace is manifested among his people as they serve, love, and minister to one another. Yet some of the gifts that God offers to his people aren't commonly seen in many churches today. Gifts of prophecy, healing, tongues, and other supernatural gifts of God seem to be absent, and many Christians are unsure how to cultivate an atmosphere where God's Spirit can work while remaining committed to the foundational truth of God's Word. How can Christians pursue and implement the miraculous gifts of the Spirit without falling into fanatical excess and splitting the church in the process? In Practicing the Power, pastor and author Sam Storms offers practical steps to understanding and exercising spiritual gifts in a way that remains grounded in the word and centered in the gospel. With examples drawn from his forty years of ministry as a pastor and teachers, Storms offers a guidebook that can help pastors, elders, and church members understand what changes are needed to see God move in supernatural power and to guard against excess and abuse of the spiritual gifts. If you long to see God's Spirit move in your church and life, and aren't sure why that isn't happening or where to begin, this book is for you.

Book Irenaeus s Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching

Download or read book Irenaeus s Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching written by Iain M. MacKenzie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002. The theology of Irenaeus, and the Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching in particular, is pivotal in showing the way in which the fathers of the church interpreted scripture and distilled doctrine. The Demonstration is an important hinge showing how the doctrine of the fourth century with its definitive councils and definitions of faith, opens out from the new testament apostolic and evangelical witness. Presenting the full translation of the Demonstration of Irenaeus by Dean Armitage Robinson, this book offers a detailed theological commentary by Canon Iain MacKenzie on this foundational doctrinal text. MacKenzie sets out the main theological themes throughout Irenaeus' work, and explores his method of systematic theology, Athanasius's dependence on Irenaeus, and Irenaeus' influence on doctrine in the fourth century - particularly the works of Athanasius, Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa. Highlighting the importance of this second century theologian for theology today, this commentary and theological interpretation offers an incentive to study Irenaeus in the wider development of Christian doctrine as a cardinal figure in the appreciation of systematic theology.

Book The Shape of Pneumatology

Download or read book The Shape of Pneumatology written by John McIntyre and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1997 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the nature, origins and development of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, finding its many recurring expressions deriving on the one hand from Scripture, and on the other from tradition in the form of the doctrine of the Trinity. The biblical models are particularly apparent in the vigorous modern Pentecostalist and charismatic churches while the Greek and Latin Fathers provided a dominant series of Trinitarian models which recur in varying forms across the history of the doctrine of the Spirit, notably in Calvin and Barth. John McIntyre considers whether the modern church has 'betrayed' the insights, vision and experience of the New Testament church. He concludes by pointing to the areas in which the church must act if it is to recover the sense of the immediacy of the Spirit both in its corporate life and in the lives of individuals.

Book The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit

Download or read book The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit written by Hendrikus Berkhof and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 1964 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systematic theology has long neglected the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Most of the church's literature on the Spirit is of a devotional or semi-theological nature. And the findings of biblical theology have not yet found their way into dogmatics, much less into the preaching and life of the church. In this book, Hendrikus Berkhof looks at the Christian faith from the viewpoint of the Holy Spirit. He sees the Spirit as the activity of God in Christ between Christ's first and second coming, and stresses the work of the Spirit in the world here and now. Thus Dr. Berkhof discusses the Holy Spirit in a far wider context than usual. Though he gives full attention to the relation between the Spirit and the individual (particularly with reference to Pentecostal beliefs), he places his emphasis on the world-wide aspects of the Spirit--missions, the church, creation, culture. Finally, he points toward an ecumenical consideration--a possible reformulation of the doctrine of the Trinity in light of new insights into the Spirit's nature, promises, work, and gifts. -Publisher

  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Chosen by God written by R. C. Sproul and published by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-02-18 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 200,000 copies sold! Chosen by God by Dr. R. C. Sproul is a contemporary classic on predestination, a doctrine that isn’t just for Calvinists. It is a doctrine for all biblical Christians. In this updated and expanded edition of Chosen by God, Sproul shows that the doctrine of predestination doesn’t create a whimsical or spiteful picture of God, but rather paints a portrait of a loving God who provides redemption for radically corrupt humans. We choose God because he has opened our eyes to see his beauty; we love him because he first loved us. There is mystery in God’s ways, but not contradiction.
