Excerpt: ...except to the astronomer, their really swift motions, and causes their glowing discs, though millions of miles in diameter, to appear as mathematical points of light, the rays from which are momentarily deflected from the eye by the varying refraction due to the slightest motions of our atmosphere. Contrasted with the stars there are five bodies visible to the naked eye which to the casual observer appear as stars, but are in reality of a wholly different nature. These are the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, distinguished by the fact that they wander in a certain pathway through the heavens, the more swiftly moving showing a change of position among the stars perceptible to the unaided eye even in a few nights, while the slower_ones show an appreciable shifting only from month to month, or year to year. Their light, furthermore, is clear and steady, owing to the fact that they have appreciable discs, readily visible in the telescope. In spite of the disturbances in the terrestrial atmosphere, light from one or another point of the disc is consequently continually reaching the eye of the observer. Two of them, Venus and Jupiter, are, except for the sun and moon, the brightest objects in the heavens, but the telescope has added to the number of the planets two large ones, Uranus and Neptune, invisible because of their distance, and, in one zone of intermediate distance, a swarm of smaller bodies, the asteroids, better called planetoids. The planets are bodies like the earth and moon. The earth is in fact one of them and the moon is its satellite. All revolve in nearly circular orbits about the sun.
