Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tennessean Abroad, or Letters From Europe, Africa, and Asia The increased facilities for locomotion and the recognised brotherhood of nations have brought the advantages of travel within the reach of many to whom they were for merly denied. Thousands are every year availing them selves of this pleasantest method of gaining correct ideas of the men and 4 manners of the time, and visiting for themselves the classic spots which have for so many ages inspired the soul of the poet, and guided the pen cil of the painter. In this pilgrimage to the shrines of the Beautiful and the haunts of the Romantic, America has not been without her representatives. There is' scarcely a spot in the Old World that gems the page of history or lives in the poet's song, where the foot of our countryman has not pressed. Some travel from curiosity, others to gain knowledge, While not a few like the birdling of Jenny Lind, go, not knowing why. Appearance of Berlin--Unter den Linden--Monuments--Royal Palace--Palace of the Prince of Prussia--Museum--Picture Gallery--Egyptian Museum--Theatre--Brandenburg Gate--Count Raczynski Gallery--Thiergarten--Bellevue--Consultation with an eminent Surgeon--Pecuniary Difficulties, etc. Six hours' ride on the railroad from Dresden, through a level and barren country, brought us to the capital of Prussia, which is situated in the midst of a dreary plain of sand, destitute of either beauty or fertility. It is surprising that Frederic the Great selected such a site, but still more surprising that it should have grown up, notwithstanding, into the nourishing metropolis of a great empire. Its walls measure twelve miles in circumference, and its population exceeds four hundred thousand. Most of the objects calculated to interest the stranger are situated in the street named Unter den Linden, from a double avenue of lime trees, which form a delightful promenade in the centre, while on each side of it runs a carriage road. It is the Broadway of the city, and the view along it is terminated by the magnificent Brandenburg gate. Just in front of our hotel (Hotel du Nord) is one of the finest bronze equestrian statues in Europe, recently erected by the present King in honor of Frederic the Great. It stands on a bronze pedestal, ornamented with basreliefs, and presents a pleasing effect to the eye. Just beyond this statue, in the Lustgarten, is a large and beautiful fountain, and in front of the Picture Gallery is an enormous basin twenty-two and a half feet in diameter, and cut out of a bowlder found near the city. At this point one may stand, and simply by turning on the heel view all that is interesting within the walls of...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From East Africa, 1895-1897 That was Thursday. Shall I draw a veil over the succeeding three days? N 0, let me proceed with a plain tale. The night was fairly good, and next morning I got up quite spry, and went down to breakfast, and then settled down in a good solid chair that happened to be standing in a sheltered spot. It was wet and very windy, and I was glad to keep still. In that chair I sat for hours, and it got rougher and rougher, and I was listening to a succession of crashes and clashes down below when suddenly there came a louder crash near at hand, and to my great astonishment I found myself and chair ung prostrate on to the deck, where we lay helpless till a dozen willing hands picked us up and put me in the chair, and tied chair to rail, and we kept steady for some hours more. When it grew dusk I feebly asked if some one would take me to bed. Mr. C. Manfully did his best, but I was so utterly ofinmc'icfitzg that he had to hand me over to the captain, who half carried me downstairs, where I have remained ever since! Isn't this a disgraceful state of things? The odd part is that, i have not been sick once, and hardly even felt sick it is only this ridiculous form of ma! De mer, being so weak and paralysed that one can hardly move. However, my excuse is that the weather has been real bad - even the first officer admitted that it was, and lots of other people keep below too, so I am not alonein disgrace. It's going to be fine to morrow, and after Port Said it's never rough, so they say, and I shall be as lively as possible. Book The Civil War as Global Conflict

Download or read book The Civil War as Global Conflict written by David T. Gleeson and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of scholarly essays exploring the American Civil War from international perspectives. In an attempt to counter the insular narratives of much of the sesquicentennial commemorations of the Civil War in the United States, editors David T. Gleeson and Simon Lewis present this collection of essays that examine the war as more than a North American conflict, one with transnational concerns. The book, while addressing the origins of the Civil War, places the struggle over slavery and sovereignty in the United States in the context of other conflicts in the Western hemisphere. Additionally, Gleeson and Lewis offer an analysis of the impact of the war and its results overseas. Although the Civil War was the bloodiest conflict in US history and arguably its single most defining event, this work underscores the reality that the war was by no means the only conflict that ensnared the global imperial powers in the mid-nineteenth century. In some ways the Civil War was just another part of contemporary conflicts over the definitions of liberty, democracy, and nationhood. The editors have successfully linked numerous provocative themes and convergences of time and space to make the work both coherent and cogent. Subjects include such disparate topics as Florence Nightingale, Gone with the Wind, war crimes and racial violence, and choices of allegiance made by immigrants to the United States. While we now take for granted the nation’s values of freedom and democracy, we cannot understand the impact of the Civil War and the victorious “new birth of freedom” without thinking globally. The contributors to The Civil War as Global Conflict reveal that Civil War-era attitudes toward citizenship and democracy were far from fixed or stable. Race, ethnicity, nationhood, and slavery were subjects of fierce controversy. Examining the Civil War in a global context requires us to see the conflict as a seminal event in the continuous struggles of people to achieve liberty and fulfill the potential of human freedom. The book concludes with a coda that reconnects the global with the local and provides ways for Americans to discuss the war and its legacy more productively. Contributors: O. Vernon Burton; Edmund L. Book Crimson Confederates

Download or read book Crimson Confederates written by Helen P. Trimpi and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though located in the heart of Unionist New England, Harvard produced 357 alumni who fought for the South during the Civil War--men not just from the South but from the North as well. This encyclopedic work gathers their stories together for the first time, providing unprecedented biographical coverage of the Crimson Confederates. Included are alumni of Harvard College, Law School, Medical School, and Lawrence Scientific School. The emphasis of the entries is on the alumnus's military career, whether as an infantry private or as a signal scout, as a surgeon or as a teacher in the Confederate Naval Academy, as an aide-de-camp or as an artillery captain. The range of participation took these men into all the major battles from the Eastern Theater under Robert E. Lee to the Trans-Mississippi under Richard Taylor and Sterling Price. Their careers spanned firing a gun at Fort Sumter and the earliest battles in Virginia to the closing shots at Bentonville and Mobile. Harvard's general officers included two major generals-- W. H. F. "Rooney" Lee (one of Robert E. Lee's sons) and John Sappington Marmaduke--as well as thirteen brigadiers, among them James Rogers Cooke, Stephen Elliott, States Rights Gist, John Echols, Ben Hardin Helm, Albert Gallatin Jenkins, Bradley Tyler Johnson, and William Booth Taliaferro. Several engineers and scientists from Lawrence Scientific School constructed major fortifications at Vicksburg and in Charleston Harbor, while others worked in the Nitre and Mining Bureau. An appendix of civilian Harvard alumni who served the Confederacy as congressmen, diplomats, jurists, editors, and in other ways is also included. This comprehensive, remarkably detailed reference work will be valuable for researchers and browsers alike. Helen P. Trimpi has taught at Stanford, College of Notre Dame (Belmont, California), University of Alberta, and Michigan State University. She is the author of Melville's Confidence Men and American Politics in the 1850s, numerous essays on Melville and modern poetry, and five volumes of poetry. Trimpi is a member of the Company of Military Historians.
