Book A Teenager s Illustrated Guide to the Early Church Fathers

Download or read book A Teenager s Illustrated Guide to the Early Church Fathers written by A M Overett and published by Lighthouse Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the Young Reader's Illustrated Guide to the Early Church Fathers! We hope you enjoy this wonderful journey through the lives of the great men (and women) of the early Church. In this book, you will learn about the great pillars of the church, who took the teachings of Jesus and the Apostles, then expounded upon them and showed us how we can apply these great truths to our lives. Many Christians today believe that we can pick up the Bible, start reading it, and immediately understand its meaning. While to some extent that might be true, we can get even greater insights from the men who first viewed then compiled, and interpreted the sacred book's contents. Through these inspired men, we learn what the role of the church is, how the church is to be administered, and how we should live our daily lives. It was these men who brought us the concepts that are not found in the Bible; defining ideas like predestination, the Holy Trinity, transubstantiation, and much more. (Young Reader) Through these inspired people, we get great insights into how we are to live our lives, and how the church should function and be administered. With their intellect, they have helped us learn about concepts that are not presented in the Bible like the Trinity. The book typically devotes a page to each Church Father with a short biography as well as a list of some of their key writings and how we can apply them to our own lives. Along, with information about the Church Fathers, we also give descriptions of the world they were living in, how the Church was functioning at the time, and what obstacles they faced when spreading the gospel. And finally, not to ignore our sisters in faith, there is a section devoted to some of the female saints and theologians who contributed greatly to the growth of the Church. The Church Fathers are presented in chronological order and this is not a complete list of all those people in that category but covers most of the main and more influential theologians and Christian thinkers. With future editions, we hope to add more of the Fathers regularly.

Book How to Become a Heroic Catholic

Download or read book How to Become a Heroic Catholic written by Catherine Stewart and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally. Catholic apologetics written for teenagers, by a teenager! Too often my fellow Catholic teenagers and young adults struggle to explain to others why Catholicism is true. They're taught what Catholics believe, but rarely are they taught why we believe what we believe. This leaves a void, discouraging young Catholics from being bold and confident in discussing their faith with their peers, friends, and family. I take examples from the Bible and the Catechism to provide answers to some of the most questioned Catholic beliefs. I start simple with questions like "Why the Bible?" before I get into the more complex and controversial theological issues. I've taken what I know and brought it to a level that is easy, understandable, and simple for teenagers and young adults to grasp. I use quotes from the Early Church Fathers, like Sts. Athanasius, Ambrose, Ignatius, and Augustine, to reveal how Catholicism is truly the same now as it was in its first years. Once you know they "why", I teach you how to use this information. You'll know what to say, when to say it, and how to become a Heroic Catholic.

Book Reading Scripture with the Church Fathers

Download or read book Reading Scripture with the Church Fathers written by Christopher A. Hall and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Christians today long to become reacquainted with their ancient ancestors in the faith. They see a deeper worship and devotion in the prayers and hymns of the early church. And they believe that the writings of the early church can shed new light on their understanding of Scripture. But where and how do we begin? Our first encounter with the writings of the church fathers may seem like visiting a far country where the language, assumptions, concerns and conclusions are completely unfamiliar to us. In Reading Scripture with the Church Fathers Christopher Hall helps us through this cultural confusion, introducing us to the early church, its unique world, and the sights and sounds of Scripture that are highlighted for them. As Hall points out, the ancient fathers hear music in Scripture where we remain tone-deaf. Despite their occasional eccentricities, theirs is a hearing refined through long listening in song, worship, teaching, meditation and oral reading. And like true masters they challenge and correct our modern assumptions as they invite us to tune our ears to hear the divine melodies of the Bible. Reading Scriptue with the Church Fathers is an exceptional guide. Hall provides a warm, winsome, informative and indispensable introcution to who these leaders and scholars were, how they read and interpreted Scripture, and how we might read Scripture with them for all its worth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the National Study of Youth and Religion--the same invaluable data as its predecessor, Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers--Kenda Creasy Dean's compelling new book, Almost Christian, investigates why American teenagers are at once so positive about Christianity and at the same time so apathetic about genuine religious practice. In Soul Searching, Christian Smith and Melinda Lundquist Denton found that American teenagers have embraced a "Moralistic Therapeutic Deism"--a hodgepodge of banal, self-serving, feel-good beliefs that bears little resemblance to traditional Christianity. But far from faulting teens, Dean places the blame for this theological watering down squarely on the churches themselves. Instead of proclaiming a God who calls believers to lives of love, service and sacrifice, churches offer instead a bargain religion, easy to use, easy to forget, offering little and demanding less. But what is to be done? In order to produce ardent young Christians, Dean argues, churches must rediscover their sense of mission and model an understanding of being Christian as not something you do for yourself, but something that calls you to share God's love, in word and deed, with others. Dean found that the most committed young Christians shared four important traits: they could tell a personal and powerful story about God; they belonged to a significant faith community; they exhibited a sense of vocation; and they possessed a profound sense of hope. Based on these findings, Dean proposes an approach to Christian education that places the idea of mission at its core and offers a wealth of concrete suggestions for inspiring teens to live more authentically engaged Christian lives. Persuasively and accessibly written, Almost Christian is a wake up call no one concerned about the future of Christianity in America can afford to ignore.

Book Baptismal Imagery in Early Christianity

Download or read book Baptismal Imagery in Early Christianity written by Robin M. Jensen and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we learn from early Christian imagery about the theological meaning of baptism? Robin Jensen, a leading scholar of early Christian art and worship, examines multiple dimensions of the early Christian baptismal rite. She explores five models for understanding baptism--as cleansing from sin, sickness, and Satan; as incorporation into the community; as sanctifying and illuminative; as death and regeneration; and as the beginning of the new creation--showing how visual images, poetic language, architectural space, and symbolic actions signify and convey the theological meaning of this ritual practice. Considering image and action together, Jensen offers a holistic and integrated understanding of the power of baptism. The book is illustrated with photos.
