Book A Systems Approach to Understanding Piping Plover Production Off channel Sandpits Along the Central Platte River

Download or read book A Systems Approach to Understanding Piping Plover Production Off channel Sandpits Along the Central Platte River written by Taylor M. Cassidy and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropogenic changes in land use, exploitation of natural resources, climate change, and habitat loss create difficulties managing and conserving species of concern. Managers are often forced to make decisions with incomplete information and much uncertainty. Unsuccessful attempts to manage for and conserve species in the past, may have resulted from failures to recognize the complexity of systems, resulting in actions that may have had unintended consequences. Thus, applying Systems Thinking and System Dynamics is appropriate for understanding what factors influence species success and evaluating what management actions may be implemented to help achieve conservation targets while minimizing negative impacts to other parts of the system. This study models the dynamics of a Piping Plover population in the Central Platte River Valley, Nebraska, and the factors that influence fledgling success. Historical nesting areas on river sandbars have been flooded or eroded away due to natural and artificial variations in river hydrology. In response to this, the Platte River Recovery Implementation Program, a program established to improve habitat use and productivity of Piping Plovers on the Central Platte River, began acquiring and constructing land to provide nesting habitat at off-channel sites. However, despite management efforts productivity has declined overtime. A systems approach was applied to: 1) identify and understand the interactions and impacts of various factors and management actions on Piping Plover productivity using a Systems Thinking approach; and 2) develop a System Dynamics model to evaluate Piping Plover fledging success under various management strategies. A model was created that incorporates all the life stages of a Piping Plover annual cycle; however, the model needs further refinement to test management scenarios. The presented model is a baseline template that can be used for any population in the future to help identify leverage points in the system to increase fledging success.

Book Effects on Piping Plover Charadrius Melodus Ord Foraging Habitat from Sea level Rise

Download or read book Effects on Piping Plover Charadrius Melodus Ord Foraging Habitat from Sea level Rise written by Peter Lostritto and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea-level rise from global climate change is becoming increasingly important especially in geographic sciences, where space and time are taken into account. Globally, the mid- Atlantic shoreline of the United States is expected to be at greater risk than the observed global sea-level rise due to localized sinking of the land surface. The shorebird species Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus), an endangered species, is predicted to be particularly at risk from the estimated rising sea levels due to their already vulnerable breeding habitat within their distribution along the United States Atlantic coast. Traditionally, research has examined the threats to C. melodus nesting habitats; however, one of their most important foraging habitats, coastal wetlands, which is often depended upon by recently hatched chicks, is preferentially at risk from future rising sea levels. This study investigates how wetlands within C. melodus predicted suitable habitat may be affected from rising sea levels for up to 120 years into the future (from 2006). The specific objectives are threefold: (i) parameterize a functional habitat suitability model for C. melodus; (ii) evaluate the accuracy of the habitat suitability model in field sites; and (iii) investigate the prospective effects of sea-level rise on wetlands within the predicted suitable habitat of C. melodus at time intervals of 30, 60, and 120 years. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used as a tool to predict future outcomes to C. melodus wetlands foraging habitat from sea-level rise. Maps for three different locations within Piping Plover breeding distribution (Cape May, Assateague NWR, and Chincoteague NWR) were created showing outcomes for several sea-level rise scenarios. Results indicate that effects from sea-level rise on C. melodus wetlands habitat vary based on location. Two of the locations (Assateague NWR and Chincoteague NWR), which are barrier islands, are predicted to be negatively affected from sea-level rise (73- 94% net loss for Assateague NWR and 48-90% net loss for Chincoteague NWR in 120 years), whereas the Cape May location, which is not a barrier island, is predicted to have little to no negative impact from sea-level rise on the wetlands within Piping Plover predicted suitable habitat. From these investigations of three locations in the mid- Atlantic region, it is concluded that the effect of sea level rise in the future on wetlands foraging habitat for C. melodus is site specific, with two of the three locations exhibiting significant losses (48-94%) in habitat within 120 years. Given that this species is already endangered, this conclusion indicates that future changes in sea level will place an additional stress on the species.

Download or read book Endangered and Threatened Species of the Platte River written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-02-24 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tension between wildlife protection under the Endangered Species Act and water management in the Platte River Basin has existed for more than 25 years. The Platte River provides important habitat for migratory and breeding birds, including three endangered or threatened species: the whooping crane, the northern Great Plains population of the piping plover, and the interior least tern. The leading factors attributed to the decline of the cranes are historical overhunting and widespread habitat destruction and, for the plovers and terns, human interference during nesting and the loss of riverine nesting sites in open sandy areas that have been replaced with woodlands, sand and gravel mines, housing, and roadways. Extensive damming has disrupted passage of the endangered pallid sturgeon and resulted in less suitable habitat conditions such as cooler stream flows, less turbid waters, and inconsistent flow regimes. Commercial harvesting, now illegal, also contributed to the decline of the sturgeon. Endangered and Threatened Species of the Platte River addresses the habitat requirements for these federally protected species. The book further examines the scientific aspects of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's instream-flow recommendations and habitat suitability guidelines and assesses the science concerning the connections among the physical systems of the river as they relate to species' habitats.

Book The Sand Creek Massacre

Download or read book The Sand Creek Massacre written by Stan Hoig and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-02-27 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes called "The Chivington Massacre" by those who would emphasize his responsibility for the attack and "The Battle of Sand Creek" by those who would imply that it was not a massacre, this event has become one of our nation’s most controversial Indian conflicts. The subject of army and Congressional investigations and inquiries, a matter of vigorous newspaper debates, the object of much oratory and writing biased in both directions, the Sand Creek Massacre very likely will never be completely and satisfactorily resolved. This account of the massacre investigates the historical events leading to the battle, tracing the growth of the Indian-white conflict in Colorado Territory. The author has shown the way in which the discontent stemming from the treaty of Fort Wise, the depredations committed by the Cheyennes and Arapahoes prior to the massacre, and the desire of some of the commanding officers for a bloody victory against the Indians laid the groundwork for the battle at Sand Creek.
