Book A Systematic Large Phase Space Study of Pion pi superscript Kaon K superscript and Proton p P Production in Au Au Heavy ion Collisions from the RHIC Beam Energy Scan Program at STAR

Download or read book A Systematic Large Phase Space Study of Pion pi superscript Kaon K superscript and Proton p P Production in Au Au Heavy ion Collisions from the RHIC Beam Energy Scan Program at STAR written by Christopher Edward Flores and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) was designed to explore the phase diagram of nuclear matter. In this document data collected using the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) during the BES program are used to study the production of pion (pi [superscript ±), kaon (K [superscript ±), and proton (p, p) across seven collision energies, [root s[subscript NN] = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27.0, 39.0, and 62.4 GeV. The results are presented differentially in nine centrality bins and over as broad a transverse mass and rapidity range as the detector capabilities allow. The yields of each particle species are first presented as transverse mass spectra. The spectra are then fit with spectral shapes to extract rapidity density distributions. Full phase space yields are also obtained for the case of the pion. These results help characterize the nature of the medium produced in heavy-ion collisions. In particular, the dependence of the medium's chemistry, expansion properties, and thermal condition on collision energy, event centrality, and kinematic phase space are now accessible using the results of this study.

Book Pion Production in 4 5 GeV Au Au Collisions from the STAR Fixed target Pilot Run

Download or read book Pion Production in 4 5 GeV Au Au Collisions from the STAR Fixed target Pilot Run written by Kathryn Carson Meehan and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The RHIC Beam Energy Scan (BES) Program was proposed to look for the turn-off of signatures of the quark gluon plasma (QGP), search for a possible QCD critical point, and study the nature of the phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter. The first phase of the BES program (BES-I) took place from 2010-2016. Several interesting observables studied in BES-I, including the net-proton higher moments and the directed flow of protons, show interesting behavior below 20 GeV and could suggest a transition to a hadron dominated regime. Data from energies lower than 7 GeV could help determine whether these behaviors are indicative of phase transitions or criticality. The goal of the STAR Fixed-Target (FXT) Program is to extend the collision energy range in BES-II to lower energies than is feasible with colliding beams. In order for this program to be approved, it was necessary to demonstrate that STAR could successfully perform measurements in a fixed-target geometry. In this dissertation we present results from the fixed-target pilot run data set collected in 2015 with the STAR detector. The pilot run consisted of 4.5 GeV per nucleon center-of-mass energy Au + Au collisions. The [pi]− spectra and rapidity density are measured from the top 5% most central collisions and found to be comparable to previous results at similar energies from the AGS experiments. Additionally the 4[pi] yield is extracted and found to be 153 +/- 15 (stat) +/- 29 (sys). Together, these and additional results measured by other analyzers from multiple institutions in STAR, demonstrated that STAR can successfully reproduce many physics results from the AGS experiments. This helped convince the Brookhaven Program Advisory Committee (PAC) to include an official FXT program in BES-II, to be conducted in 2019-2021. Specifically, the PAC approved the collection of 100 million events each taken at eight different energies with STAR operating in the fixed-target configuration. This will extend BES-II to center-of-mass energies as low as 3.0 GeV per nucleon, nearly doubling the [mu][subscript B] reach of the BES program and thus broadening our search for interesting transition features in the phase diagram.

Book Ups and Downs with a Bit of Strange

Download or read book Ups and Downs with a Bit of Strange written by Evan Warren Sangaline and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental results from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) Beam Energy Scan (BES) on identified particle spectra of [pi]+(−), K+(−), and p-(p) at mid-rapidity are presented. Au+Au collisions at center-of-mass energies of [squareroot]sNN=7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27.0, 39.0, and 62.4 GeV are analyzed using data recorded by the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) detector. The resulting spectra are used to construct measurements of the nuclear modification factor R(CP), Bjorken energy density, and central event baryon enhancement as a function of collision energy. These measurements address the onset of deconfinement and help to bridge the gap between Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) energies and top RHIC energy.

Book Pion Kaon Proton and Antiproton Production in Proton Proton Collisions

Download or read book Pion Kaon Proton and Antiproton Production in Proton Proton Collisions written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inclusive pion, kaon, proton, and antiproton production from proton-proton collisions is studied at a variety of proton energies. Various available parameterizations of Lorentz-invariant differential cross sections as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity are compared with experimental data. The Badhwar and Alper parameterizations are moderately satisfactory for charged pion production. The Badhwar parameterization provides the best fit for charged kaon production. For proton production, the Alper parameterization is best, and for antiproton production the Carey parameterization works best. However, no parameterization is able to fully account for all the data. Book Pi Spectra and Correlations from 16O Au Collisions at 200 A GeV

Download or read book Pi Spectra and Correlations from 16O Au Collisions at 200 A GeV written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of neutral pions by the interaction of 200 A GeV proton and 16O projectiles with an Au target has been studied for 1.5 d"[eta] d"2.1. Transverse momentum spectra have been measured between 0.4 GeV/c and 2.8 GeV/c and their dependence on the centrality of the reaction has been investigated. The peripheral spectrum shows a marked change of slope with a hard component starting at about 1.8 GeV/c in close similarity to p + p data. Preliminary analyses of photon data yield an excess over known photon sources for central data which is absent for peripheral reactions. Correlations of 4 photons representing neutral pions have been studied in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. Data were taken in the WA80 experiment at the CERN-SPS with a 200 A GeV oxygen beam. The .pi.° are detected via their decay photons with a high-granularity lead glass array. Special features of interferometry using neutral pions will be discussed. The extracted preliminary parameters for high p/sub T/ pions emitted near midrapidity in O + Au collisions lead to rather small effective source sizes. 23 refs., 8 figs.

Book J psi Production in Au Au Collisions at Square Root s sub NN

Download or read book J psi Production in Au Au Collisions at Square Root s sub NN written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first J/psi production analysis of Au+Au reactions at forward rapidity at [square root]sNN = 200 GeV. In the second year of RHIC running, design energy was achieved in the collisions of both Au+Au ions and proton+proton reactions. The production of the J/psi is measured by the PHENIX experiment in Au+Au collisions as well as in proton-proton collisions. The scientific goal is to investigate the nature of hot, dense nuclear matter capitalizing on the unique properties of the J/psi as a probe of this matter. Recent experimental results by the NA50 collaboration at CERN strongly deviate from the conventional picture that successfully describes data at lower energies. The importance of such a measurement is demonstrated by the wide spectrum of theoretical explanations concerning the existing data. The merits of these models will be explored in a systematic and comprehensive study of the J/psi and open charm in collisions of a variety of species and energy. A survey of the theoretical models is presented and the relevant open charm and J/psi PHENIX measurements are compared.

Book Measurement of 1S 2S 3S Production in P p and Au Au Collisions at SNN

Download or read book Measurement of 1S 2S 3S Production in P p and Au Au Collisions at SNN written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present measurements of bottomonium production in heavy-ion and p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The inclusive yield of the three ? states, ?(1S+2S+3S), was measured in the PHENIX experiment via electron-positron decay pairs at midrapidity for Au+Au and p+p collisions at sNN=200 GeV. The ?(1S+2S+3S)→e+e- differential cross section at midrapidity was found to be Beed?/dy=108±38(stat)±15(syst)±11(luminosity) pb in p+p collisions. The nuclear modification factor in the 30% most central Au+Au collisions indicates a suppression of the total ? state yield relative to the extrapolation from p+p collision data. In conclusion, the suppression is consistent with measurements made by STAR at RHIC and at higher energies by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.
