Book Axially Symmetric Shapes with Minimum Wave Drag

Download or read book Axially Symmetric Shapes with Minimum Wave Drag written by Maxwell Alfred Heaslet and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The external wave drag of bodies of revolution moving at supersonic speeds can be expressed either in terms of the geometry of the body, or in terms of the body-simulating axial source distribution. For purposes of deriving optimum bodies under various given condtions, it is found that the second of the methods mentioned is the more tractable. By use of a quasi-cylindrical theory, that is, the boundary conditions are applied on the surface of a cylinder rather than on the body itself, the variational problems of the optimum bodies having prescribed volume or caliber are solved. The streamwise variations of cross-section area and drags of the bodies are exhibited, and some numerical results are given. The solutions are found to depend upon a single parameter involving Mach number and radius-lenght ration of the given cylinder. Variation of this parameter from zero to infinity gives the spectrum of optimum bodies with the given condition from the slender-body result of the two-dimensional. The numerical results show that for increasing values of the parameter, the optimum shapes quickly approach the two-dimensional.

Book Experimental Investigation of a 90 Degree Cascade Diffusing Bend with an Area Ratio of 1 45 1 and with Several Inlet Boundary Layers

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of a 90 Degree Cascade Diffusing Bend with an Area Ratio of 1 45 1 and with Several Inlet Boundary Layers written by Daniel Friedman and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted in order to determine the performance of a 90 degree cascade diffusing bend with an area ratio of 1.45:1 and a 19-inch square inlet with several inlet-boundary-layer shapes and thicknesses. The maximum mean inlet Mach number was 0.41 and the corresponding airfoil Reynolds number was 950,000. The experimental results seem to indicate that, when the duct configuration requires a bend, a certain amount of diffusion can be obtained without an appreciable rise in the total-pressure losses. If length is important, this configuration requires much less space than the usual diffuser-bend combination.

Book Aerodynamics of Wings and Bodies

Book Investigation of the Effects of Leading edge Chord extensions and Fences in Combination with Leading edge Flaps on the Aerodynamic Characteristics at Mach Numbers from 0 40 to 0 93 of a 45 Degree Sweptback Wing of Aspect Ratio 4

Download or read book Investigation of the Effects of Leading edge Chord extensions and Fences in Combination with Leading edge Flaps on the Aerodynamic Characteristics at Mach Numbers from 0 40 to 0 93 of a 45 Degree Sweptback Wing of Aspect Ratio 4 written by Kenneth P. Spreemann and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation was made to determine the effects of 6 degree full-span and 3 degree partial-span leading-edge flaps in combination with chord-extensions or fences on the aerodynamic characteristics of a wing-fuselage configuration with a 45 degree sweptback wing of aspect ratio 4, taper ratio 0.3, and NACA 65A006 airfoil sections. The investigation was made in the Langley high-speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel over a Mach number range of 0.40 to 0.93 and an angle-of-attack range of about -2 degrees to 24 degrees. Lift, drag, and pitching-moment data were obtained for all configurations. From overall considerations of stability and performance it appears that with the model of this investigation the 6 degree full-span leading-edge flaps in combination with the chord-extension over the outboard 35 percent of the span, with or without leading-edge camber, would be the most desirable configuration.

Book Tests of Two blade Propellers in the Langley 8 foot High speed Tunnel to Determine the Effect on Propeller Performance of a Modification of Inboard Pitch Distribution

Download or read book Tests of Two blade Propellers in the Langley 8 foot High speed Tunnel to Determine the Effect on Propeller Performance of a Modification of Inboard Pitch Distribution written by James Benjamin Delano and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents propeller characteristics for two propellers that differ only in inboard pitch distribution. The forward Mach number range extended to 0.062 and the blade-angle range was from 20 to 55 degrees. Section thrust-coefficient data are also presented to afford a more detailed analysis of the effects of modifying the pitch distribution of the inboard sections of a propeller.
