Book A System of Intellectual Philosophy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Intellectual Philosophy The following Treatise presents the sum of a course of Lectures, which, for six or eight years past, I have been in, the habit of delivering to successive classes, on the subject of Intellectual Philosophy. One thing I may say in relation to this subject, without boasting. No class have yet passed through this course, without becoming deeply interested in the science of Mental Philosophy; and, in their judgment, receiving great benefit from the truths developed, as well as from the method of development which was adopted. Hence the desire has been very generally expressed by those who have attended the course of instruction, as well as by others who have become acquainted with the general features of the system taught, to have it presented to the public in a form adapted to popular reading. In conformity to such suggestions, as well as the permanent convictions of my own mind, the following Treatise has been prepared. In preparing it, it has been my aim to reject light from no source whatever from which it could be obtained, and at the same time to maintain the real prerogative of manly independence of thought. The individuals to whom I feel most indebted as a philosopher, are Coleridge, Cousin, and Kant - three luminaries of the first order in the sphere of philosophy. Book The Elements of Intellectual Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Elements of Intellectual Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Francis Wayland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Intellectual Philosophy Having been intended for oral delivery, they were, in many respects, modified by the circumstances of their origin. Hence, illustrations have been introduced more freely than would other wise have seemed necessary. In preparing them for the press, however, I was led to consider the class of persons for whose use they were principally designed. I remembered the dith culty of fixing definitely in the mind of the pupil the nature and limits of subjective truth; and therefore allowed my instruo tions to retain in general the form which they had previously assumed. Whether I have in this respect judged wisely, it is not for me to determine. I have not entered upon the discussion of many of the topics which have called into exercise the acumen of the ablest meta physicians. Intended to serve the purposes of a text-book, it was necessary that the volume should be compressed within a compass adapted to the time usually allotted to the study of this science in the colleges of our country. I have, therefore, attempted to present and illustrate the important truths in intel lectual philosophy, rather than the inferences which may be drawn from them, or the doctrines which they may presuppose. These may be pursued to any length, at the option of the teacher. If I have not entered upon these discussions, I hope that I have prepared the way for their more ample and truthful develop ment. It has been my desire to render this work an aid to mental improvement. For this purpose, I have added practical sug gestions on the cultivation of the several faculties. Earnest minded young men frequently err in their attempts at self-im provement. It has seemed to me, therefore, that a work of this kind would be manifestly imperfect, did it not directly, as well as indirectly, aid the student in his efforts to discipline and strengthen his intellectual energies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intellectual Philosophy 1. The body in one sense a part of self. That which each one calls himself embraces more or less in different cases. Considering man as a purely reflective being self includes only the mind; but considering him as, a sensitive and - active Sting, it includes the body as well as the mind, Since sensation is manifested in the body and action transmitted through it. Though the body is but the special instrument and medium of the mind in communicating with exterior Objects, yet, as a por tion of matter Specially organized and appropriated for that purpose, it becomes so animated and pervaded by the spirit, as to seem a part of self. It is not, however, the whole body of whose affections we are conscious, but only the nerves of sensation. But these are so largely distributed through the body, and especially over its surfaces, that nearly all the external acts and internal processes and functions of life affect them.
