Book Systematics and Phylogeny of Weevils

Download or read book Systematics and Phylogeny of Weevils written by Rolf Oberprieler and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue on the Systematics and Phylogeny of Weevils presents 31 new research papers on one of the most diverse and successful groups of animals on Earth, the beetle superfamily Curculionoidea. It was in part inspired to commemorate the extraordinary life and scientific achievements of Guillermo (“Willy”) Kuschel (1918–2017), who shaped this field of science over the last century like no other weevil systematist. The papers in this memorial issue span weevil faunas from all over the globe, including South and Central America, Africa, Europe and the Near East, South-East Asia, New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand. They include major advances on the phylogeny and classification of the “broad-nosed” weevils (Entiminae), on the weevils associated with American cycads and on the unique extinct weevil fauna preserved in the 100-million-year-old Burmese amber, when weevils started to diversify alongside the oldest angiosperm plants. They comprise a tribute to Willy Kuschel, the proceedings of a weevil symposium held in his honor in 2016 in Orlando, Florida, 24 systematic studies (including seven phylogenetic analyses) and five other contributions on the diversity, biology, distribution, evolution and fossil history of weevils. In the papers collated in this volume, 30 new genera and 92 new species of weevils are described and a new family of extinct weevils is recognized.

Book A Survey of the Weevils of Ukraine

Download or read book A Survey of the Weevils of Ukraine written by Tatyana Nikulina and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our knowledge of Ukrainian bark and ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) is summarized as a baseline for future studies of the fauna, with a checklist including information on distribution, host trees, biology and taxonomy. One hundred twenty-two species are recorded from Ukraine, of which seven are recorded for the first time. One species is recorded for the first time from Europe. Previous records of 24 species are considered dubious and requiring confirmation. In contrast to the Palaearctic Catalogue (Knížek 2011b), we consider Anisandrus maiche to be first described by Kurentsov (1941) rather than by Eggers (1942); A. maiche (Eggers, 1942) is a junior synonym of A. maiche(Kurentsov, 1941).

Book Basic and Applied Aspects of Biopesticides

Download or read book Basic and Applied Aspects of Biopesticides written by K. Sahayaraj and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, the major challenge of humanity is focused on population growth through agricultural production in order to meet the demand for food. The food crunch is mainly due to pest and disease. Traditional methods, synthetic insecticides and microbicides cause health hazards to human beings, domestic animals and also affect our immediate environments. Serious concerns were implemented by both developing and developed countries as Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Bio-intensive Integrated Pest Management (BIPM) systems where biopesticides play an important role worldwide. The available books are limited to particular aspects of biopesticides. Hence, it is imperative to bring out a holistic documentation which will provide the reader information on all aspects of biopesticides. The book consists of five sections namely microbials, botanicals, natural enemies semio- chemicals and biotechnology and equipments, bioinformatics tools and IPM. In Section I, microbial deals with utilization of Bacillus in control of phytonematodes; biological control of pest and diseases with fluorescent pseudomonads, entomopathogenic fungus and entomopathogenic nematodes in pest management, microbial viral insecticides and microbial elicitors to induce immunity for plant disease control in chilli and tomato. Importance of plant essential oils, botanicals in endocrine disruption, relevance of botanicals and use of plant volatile on pest management has been discussed in Section II. Importance and role of reduviidae, weaver ants, ground beetles, Odonatas, spiders in biological control has been discussed in Section III. In addition, genetic improvement of biocontrol agents for sustainable pest management has also been highlighted. In Section IV, classical practices and pheromone, kairomonal enhancement to natural enemies and use of transgenic plants in insect control are highlighted. Equipment and their application methodologies for application of biopesticides; relevance of bioinformatics in biopesticides management; pest management of soybean, bio fouling and eco friendly antifoulants have been highlighted in Section V. Each chapter has objectives and conclusion along with recommendations.

Book Chemical Energy and Mechanisms of Reproductive Isolation in Ambrosia Beetles microform

Download or read book Chemical Energy and Mechanisms of Reproductive Isolation in Ambrosia Beetles microform written by Susanne Kuhnholz and published by Library and Archives Canada = Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. This book was released on 2004 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Species-specificity in signals that mediate reproductive interactions are of adaptive advantage in avoiding the cost of mismating and potential low fitness through hybridization. Phytophagous insects retain species-specificity in part by multicomponent sex pheromones synergized or otherwise enhanced by host chemicals. For four sympatric species of Trypodendron spp. (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) in British Columbia, coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection analysis of volatiles from beetles, hosts and non-hosts revealed several antennally active compounds. These were tested in field bioassays for their behavioural significance as reproductive isolating mechanisms in finding hosts, attracting conspecifics and repelling heterospecifics. The ESR and ZRR stereoisomers of tetrahydro-2,2,6-trimethy1-6-vinyl-2H-pyran-3-01 (tirathol) were identified as the aggregation pheromone of T. betulae. Responses were synergistically increased when the pheromone was combined with the birch host volatile conophthorin and ethanol. Use of tirathol isolates T. betulae semiochemically from three other sympatric Trypodendron species, which were shown to use the pheromone (+)-lineatin. Trypodendron retusum responded to a synergistic combination of lineatin, ethanol, and the aspen host volatile salicylaldehyde, with apparent phylogeographic variation between coastal and interior populations. Salicylaldehyde repelled coniferophagus T. lineatum and T. rufitarsus, while T. retusum was repelled by the conifer volatile alpha-pinene. Examination of the symbiotic fungal associations of the four native ambrosia beetles and the established exotic T. domesticum revealed overlapping combinations of fungal isolates among the genera Ophiostoma, Ambrosiella, and Ceratocystiopsis, with no evidence of co-evolution between fungi and their beetle vectors. Isolation techniques, anatomic locations, and insect life stage were crucial in determining fungal partners. The construction of a molecular phylogeny based on COI and a Wingless regions of the North American and European Trypodendron species and two other species in the tribe Xyloterini placed the European angiosperm-infesting T. signatum ancestral to all other Trypodendron spp. North American angiosperm specialists, T. retusum and T. betulae are derived from coniferous generalists. The phylogeny does not allow for conclusions to be drawn about the evolution of pheromones or fungal associates as reproductive isolating mechanisms.

Book Insects and Diseases of Mediterranean Forest Systems

Download or read book Insects and Diseases of Mediterranean Forest Systems written by Timothy D. Paine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-06 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insect and disease issues are often specific to the Mediterranean forest systems rather than shared with the temperate forests. In addition to the specific native insects and diseases, the forests are subject to the invasion of exotic species. The forests are also at risk from high degrees of human activity, including changing patterns of forest fires, land management activities, intensive plantation forestry using introduced timber species from other Mediterranean climate zones, and atmospheric deposition. Combined with elements of global climate change that may disproportionately affect Mediterranean climate systems, this creates a number of significant management issues that are unique to the Mediterranean forests. It is our goal that the information contained in this volume will contribute to understanding the unique aspects of Mediterranean forest systems and to protecting these critical resources.
