Book A Survey of Choral Music

Download or read book A Survey of Choral Music written by Homer Ulrich and published by Schirmer Books. This book was released on 1973 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this brief text, Homer Ulrich offers students a history of choral music that is as rich and fascinating as the genre itself. Emphasizing those works that represent historical or stylistic turning points, A SURVEY OF CHORAL MUSIC begins several centuries before the invention of the genre and takes students all the way into the twentieth century. Ulrich's descriptive discussions mix history and analysis with explication of musical structures, text sources and treatments, and kinds of texture. The text offers a useful glossary, bibliography, and list of music sources--as well as appendices that provide several principal types of sacred texts (including Requiem Mass, Te Deum, and Magnificat) for quick reference.

Book Exploring Twentieth Century Vocal Music

Download or read book Exploring Twentieth Century Vocal Music written by Sharon Mabry and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-25 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vocal repertoire of the twentieth century--including works by Schoenberg, Boulez, Berio, Larsen, and Vercoe--presents exciting opportunities for singers to stretch their talents and demonstrate their vocal flexibility. Contemporary composers can be very demanding of vocalists, requiring them to recite, trill, and whisper, or to read non-traditional scores. For singers just beginning to explore the novelties of the contemporary repertoire, Exploring Twentieth-Century Vocal Music is an ideal guide. Drawing on over thirty years of experience teaching and performing the twentieth century repertoire, Sharon Mabry has written a cogent and insightful book for singers and voice teachers who are just discovering the innovative music of the twentieth century. The book familiarizes readers with the new and unusual notation systems employed by some contemporary composers. It suggests rehearsal techniques and vocal exercises that help singers prepare to tackle the repertoire. And the book offers a list of the most important and interesting works to emerge in the twentieth century, along with suggested recital programs that will introduce audiences as well as singers to this under-explored body of music.

Book A History of Twentieth Century Music in a Theoretic Analytical Context

Download or read book A History of Twentieth Century Music in a Theoretic Analytical Context written by Elliott Antokoletz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Twentieth-Century Music in a Theoretic-Analytical Context is an integrated account of the genres and concepts of twentieth-century art music, organized topically according to aesthetic, stylistic, technical, and geographic categories, and set within the larger political, social, economic, and cultural framework. While the organization is topical, it is historical within that framework. Musical issues interwoven with political, cultural, and social conditions have had a significant impact on the course of twentieth-century musical tendencies and styles. The goal of this book is to provide a theoretic-analytical basis that will appeal to those instructors who want to incorporate into student learning an analysis of the musical works that have reflected cultural influences on the major musical phenomena of the twentieth century. Focusing on the wide variety of theoretical issues spawned by twentieth-century music, A History of Twentieth-Century Music in a Theoretic-Analytical Context reflects the theoretical/analytical essence of musical structure and design.

Book An Exploration of Word Painting Techniques in Choral Music from the Renaissance Through the Twenty First Century

Download or read book An Exploration of Word Painting Techniques in Choral Music from the Renaissance Through the Twenty First Century written by Melissa Erin Aguilar and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Word Painting techniques are an essential part of choral music in the Renaissance through the Twenty-First Century. Word painting is a musical depiction of a text.In the Renaissance, word painting was present through madrigalisms, which sought to musically depict literal words or phrases in a secular text used for the madrigal genre. Examples of madrigalisms in this era included chromatic harmonies on words like "pain" or "suffering," or two singers singing on the phrase, "two by two." In the Baroque era, madrigalisms continued with examples such as melismas to resemble laughing. Genres beyond the madrigal began to use word painting techniques, such as irregular, harsh accents mimicking the motion of a hammer and nails on the cross. In the Classical era, word painting was utilized more in terms of articulations and rhythms, such as a slurred eighth note motive to represent tremors or texts that were repeated for emphasis. In the Romantic era, composers expanded the idea of word painting by employing other instruments with voices, like utilizing a sextuplet motive in the piano to mimic a stream in a text or using simple homophony in voices to demonstrate triviality. In the twentieth-century, composers utilized word painting techniques like increasing dynamics and accents on more intensive texts.By the twenty-first-century, composers employed word painting techniques in various ways, from literal depictions of specific words in modern day madrigals, to pianistic motives that represented themes, to increased articulations and dynamics for textual emphasis. While all eras differ slightly in their approach, word painting techniques are clearly pervasive in choral music from the Renaissance through the twenty-first century, and it is important to study these techniques in preparation for performing the works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this volume, Howard Smither completes his monumental History of the Oratorio. Volumes 1 and 2, published by the University of North Carolina Press in 1977, treated the oratorio in the Baroque era, while Volume 3, published in 1987, explored the genre in the Classical era. Here, Smither surveys the history of nineteenth- and twentieth-century oratorio, stressing the main geographic areas of oratorio composition and performance: Germany, Britain, America, and France. Continuing the approach of the previous volumes, Smither treats the oratorio in each language and geographical area by first exploring the cultural and social contexts of oratorio. He then addresses aesthetic theory and criticism, treats libretto and music in general, and offers detailed analyses of the librettos and music of specific oratorios (thirty-one in all) that are of special importance to the history of the genre. As a synthesis of specialized literature as well as an investigation of primary sources, this work will serve as both a springboard for further research and an essential reference for choral conductors, soloists, choral singers, and others interested in the history of the oratorio.
