Book excerpt: Word Painting techniques are an essential part of choral music in the Renaissance through the Twenty-First Century. Word painting is a musical depiction of a text.In the Renaissance, word painting was present through madrigalisms, which sought to musically depict literal words or phrases in a secular text used for the madrigal genre. Examples of madrigalisms in this era included chromatic harmonies on words like "pain" or "suffering," or two singers singing on the phrase, "two by two." In the Baroque era, madrigalisms continued with examples such as melismas to resemble laughing. Genres beyond the madrigal began to use word painting techniques, such as irregular, harsh accents mimicking the motion of a hammer and nails on the cross.In the Classical era, word painting was utilized more in terms of articulations and rhythms, such as a slurred eighth note motive to represent tremors or texts that were repeated for emphasis. In the Romantic era, composers expanded the idea of word painting by employing other instruments with voices, like utilizing a sextuplet motive in the piano to mimic a stream in a text or using simple homophony in voices to demonstrate triviality. In the twentieth-century, composers utilized word painting techniques like increasing dynamics and accents on more intensive texts.By the twenty-first-century, composers employed word painting techniques in various ways, from literal depictions of specific words in modern day madrigals, to pianistic motives that represented themes, to increased articulations and dynamics for textual emphasis. While all eras differ slightly in their approach, word painting techniques are clearly pervasive in choral music from the Renaissance through the twenty-first century, and it is important to study these techniques in preparation for performing the works.
