Book Factors Correlating with Teachers Use of Computers in the Classroom

Download or read book Factors Correlating with Teachers Use of Computers in the Classroom written by Samia A. Wahab and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2008-11-11 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a need to understand the factors correlating with teachers' instructional use of computers, because much of the present research focuses on students rather than teachers. This study examines several factors relating to the use of computers in the classroom by teachers. The factors examined include teacher attitudes, emotions, beliefs, and outside influences. This was done by a review of the present literature, administering two surveys, and analyzing the survey data. Questionnaires were distributed to faculty at five randomly selected high schools in a Midwest city participating in the study. Data from the survey was then examined to determine which factors correlate with teacher computer use in the classroom. The results of this study will help improve understanding of teachers' instructional computer use.

Book Relationships of Selected Factors and the Level of Computer Use for Instructional Purposes by Technology Education Teachers in Ohio Public Schools

Download or read book Relationships of Selected Factors and the Level of Computer Use for Instructional Purposes by Technology Education Teachers in Ohio Public Schools written by Mohammed I. Isleem and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study determined the level of computer use for instructional purposes by technology education teachers in Ohio public schools. The study also investigated the relationships between the level of use and selected factors: expertise; access; attitude; support; and teacher characteristics. This study derived its theoretical framework from Rogers2 (1995) model of diffusion of innovations. A survey-correlation research design was used. A questionnaire was developed and mailed to all technology education teachers (N = 1170) in Ohio public schools in the 2002-2003 school year. Validity and reliability were established for the survey instrument. The return rate of the survey was 66%. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were used. The findings of this study indicated that technology education teachers have high levels of computer use in mainstream computer uses such as word processing, e-mail, Internet, and classroom management. Strong positive correlation existed between the level of computer use and teachers2 perceived expertise and teachers2 perceived attitude toward computers as tools. In addition, moderate positive correlation existed between the level of use and teachers' perceived access to computers. Multiple regression analysis indicated a positive predictive value toward computer use with the demographic characteristics of instructional experience and modular instructional method, and a negative predictive value with age and urban geographic location. The independent variables that explain the greatest amount of variation in the level of computer use were in order of predictive value: teachers2 perceived expertise, attitude, and access. Technology education teachers have high levels of computer use in mainstream applications and low levels of computer use in specialized applications. These levels of use are slightly lower than the state levels. Those teachers that possess expertise are the ones who use the computer for instructional purposes. Positive attitudes toward computers as tools provide a starting point for adoption of computer use. To increase computer use, technology education teachers need to be given more training. In-service training needs to be a top priority. Pre-service programs should include more courses in using computers as tools for teaching and learning.

Book Educational Research in an Age of Accountability

Download or read book Educational Research in an Age of Accountability written by Robert E. Slavin and published by Allyn & Bacon. This book was released on 2007 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is designed to enable students to become intelligent consumers of educational research in order to help create effective and accountable learning environments. Written in a very clear and user-friendly style, this text focuses on understanding the intent of the researcher, the procedures, and the results so that students can use appropriate research findings to inform school change. This text emphasizes how responses to the accountability movement in schools can be focused around using and understanding scientific inquiry. It balances quantitative and qualitative research methodology and discusses action research and mixed methods in detail. Principles for conducting research and criteria for evaluating its overall credibility are presented in a concise manner. Students are shown how to analyze and evaluate research, and judge the usefulness of the findings for educational practice. In addition, students are shown how this knowledge can translate to their own classrooms.

Book Teacher Attitudes About Computers and Using Computers in the Classroom

Download or read book Teacher Attitudes About Computers and Using Computers in the Classroom written by Sandra Haynes Hawthorne and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This descriptive research design examined teachers’ attitudes concerning computers and using computers in the classroom. The study used a survey which investigated teachers’ attitudes concerning the use of computers in the classroom, if computer training had any effect on teachers using computers and if teachers’ age and/or teaching experience affected teachers comfort level in using computers in the classroom. Thirty certified Pre-Kindergarten – fifth grade classroom teachers from a rural southwest Georgia public elementary school participated in the survey. The teachers’ attitudes were discovered by utilizing a survey. It was expected that the results would indicate a need for teachers to receive further training and integrating technology into the classroom. It was expected that the results would indicate a need for teachers to daily use computers in the classroom and to continuously receive training on how to integrate computers into the classroom.

Book Out of Reach

Book excerpt: The Tomas Rivera Policy Institute conducted research to clarify the state of technology development in schools in San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties, California and to determine whether meaningful technology access was out of reach for those school districts in which the enrollment was predominantly Hispanic. The empirical investigation, with surveys completed by 54 principals and 123 teachers and interviews with 12 administrators, and case study site visits show that instructional technology is currently beyond the grasp of many Hispanic youth enrolled in California's public K-12 schools. In the school districts studied, the student-to-computer ratio of 14 students for every 1 computer was not significantly different from the state as a whole. However, Hispanic districts were significantly less likely than non-Hispanic districts to receive assistance from school administrators when it came to supporting technology development, in part because the administrators in Hispanic districts perceived many issues to be more significant. Teachers in the Hispanic districts were also more concerned with security and more likely to reduce student access to computers. The research concludes that students lack the tools to compete in today's marketplace, since a working knowledge of information technology is necessary for the majority of new jobs. Aspects of technology development that must be considered in addition to the mere number of computers are professional development, administrative and staff support, and environmental factors in the schools. Public and private sectors in California need to unite to improve access to educational technology for all students. Appendixes present profiles of participating school districts, a list of sites visited, and a list of interview participants. An attachment discusses study methodology.
