Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Survey of Syntactic Analysis Procedures for Natural Language The Computer Science Department of New York University, under contract to the Office of Naval Research, has prepared a series of reports examining selected areas of artificial intelligence. We hope in these critical surveys to place in perspective the main lines of past research and thereby perhaps to suggest fruitful directions for future work. As part of these surveys we have prepared precise specifications, in the programming language SETL, of some of the basic algorithms in each area. These specifications are intended to provide clear points of reference for structuring our review of past work. This first report is concerned with natural language processing systems, systems which are able to accept instructions or data in natural language. In very general terms, these systems process the text through several stages: (1) syntactic: analyzes the structure of each sentence (or other text unit) and rearranges the elements of the sentence to simplify its structures; this stage should recognize paraphrases due to alternative arrangements of words in a sentence (2) semantic: restructures the sentences into the form used for internal processing, such as inference or data retrieval; depending on the application, the output may be a command in an information retrieval language, a structure based on some set of semantic "primitives", or a tabular structure suitable as a data base; this stage should recognize some of the paraphrases due to alternative choices of words. (3) pragmatic: interprets the text based on particular context (problem situation or data base); this stage should recognize sentences which are equivalent in effect (such as "Throw that switch." and "Turn on the light."). The reader will note that these stages are very vaguely characterized. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Syntactic Analysis and Theory offers beginning students a comprehensive overview of and introduction to our current understanding of the rules and principles that govern the syntax of natural languages. Includes numerous pedagogical features such as ‘practice’ boxes and sidebars, designed to facilitate understanding of both the ‘hows’ and the ‘whys’ of sentence structure Guides readers through syntactic and morphological structures in a progressive manner Takes the mystery out of one of the most crucial aspects of the workings of language – the principles and processes behind the structure of sentences Ideal for students with minimal knowledge of current syntactic research, it progresses in theoretical difficulty from basic ideas and theories to more complex and advanced, up to date concepts in syntactic theory

Book 200 Years of Syntax

Download or read book 200 Years of Syntax written by Giorgio Graffi and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues convincingly against the widespread opinion that very few syntactic studies were carried out before the 1950s. Relying on the detailed analysis of a large amount of original sources, it shows that syntactic matters were in fact carefully investigated throughout both the 19th century and during the first half of the 20th century. Moreover, it illustrates how the enormous development of syntactic research in the last fifty years has already condemned even several recent ideas and analyses to oblivion, and deeply influenced current research programs. The wealth of research undertaken over the last two centuries is presented here in a systematic way, taking as its starting point the relationship of syntax with psychology throughout this period. The critical ideas expressed in the text are based on a detailed illustration of the different syntactic models and analyses rather than on the polemics between the different schools.

Book Automatic Syntactic Analysis Based on Selectional Preferences

Download or read book Automatic Syntactic Analysis Based on Selectional Preferences written by Alexander Gelbukh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes effective methods for automatically analyzing a sentence, based on the syntactic and semantic characteristics of the elements that form it. To tackle ambiguities, the authors use selectional preferences (SP), which measure how well two words fit together semantically in a sentence. Today, many disciplines require automatic text analysis based on the syntactic and semantic characteristics of language and as such several techniques for parsing sentences have been proposed. Which is better? In this book the authors begin with simple heuristics before moving on to more complex methods that identify nouns and verbs and then aggregate modifiers, and lastly discuss methods that can handle complex subordinate and relative clauses. During this process, several ambiguities arise. SP are commonly determined on the basis of the association between a pair of words. However, in many cases, SP depend on more words. For example, something (such as grass) may be edible, depending on who is eating it (a cow?). Moreover, things such as popcorn are usually eaten at the movies, and not in a restaurant. The authors deal with these phenomena from different points of view.

Book Syntax Theory and Analysis Volume 2

Download or read book Syntax Theory and Analysis Volume 2 written by Tibor Kiss and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-02-19 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook represents the development of research and the current level of knowledge in the fields of syntactic theory and syntax analysis. Syntax can look back to a long tradition. Especially in the last 50 years, however, the interaction between syntactic theory and syntactic analysis has led to a rapid increase in analyses and theoretical suggestions. This second edition of the Handbook on Syntax adopts a unifying perspective and therefore does not place the division of syntactic theory into several schools to the fore, but the increase in knowledge resulting from the fruitful argumentations between syntactic analysis and syntactic theory. It uses selected phenomena of individual languages and their cross-linguistic realizations to explain what syntactic analyses can do and at the same time to show in what respects syntactic theories differ from each other. It investigates how syntax is related to neighbouring disciplines and investigate the role of the interfaces especially the relationship between syntax and phonology, morphology, compositional semantics, pragmatics, and the lexicon. The phenomena chosen bring together renowned experts in syntax, and represent the consensus reached as to what has to be considered as an important as well as illustrative syntactic phenomenon. The phenomena discuss do not only serve to show syntactic analyses, but also to compare theoretical approaches with each other.

Book A Practical Guide to Syntactic Analysis

Download or read book A Practical Guide to Syntactic Analysis written by Georgia M. Green and published by Center for the Study of Language and Information Publications. This book was released on 1996-08-13 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is intended to provide for deficiencies in existing syntax textbooks. The authors thoroughly discuss the fundamental assumptions of the syntactic enterprise at a level which will forestall many of the erroneous inferences common to students of syntax. In addition, the editors also provide a brief account of the so-called 'standard' theory, and how the current frameworks for syntactic description have evolved to differ from it. With such background discussions of the evolution of various descriptive devices, the volume provides a context for understanding both older and current issues in linguistic literature; the authors have supplied a means for understanding the context of subsequent theoretical proposals and their antecedents. A Practical Guide to Syntactic Analysis is intended as a reference text for linguistics students, but is equally of interest to scholars.
