Book Analyzing Faculty Workload

Download or read book Analyzing Faculty Workload written by Jon F. Wergin and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 1994 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question being asked with increasing regularity is, Just what do faculty members do? Studies of faculty workload have been commisioned in state after state. Taken together, the studies indicate that college faculty members are working harder than ever but are probably teaching less and are almost certainly having less contact with students, particularly undergraduates. This volume of New Directions for Institutional Research explores how the public discourse about faculty work might be improved and suggests how colleges and universities might document that work in a fashion that not only more faithfully describes what faculty do but also allows for reports that are more comprehensive and useful. This is the 83rd issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Institutional Research. For more information on the series, please see the Journals and Periodicals page.

Book Using Academic Program Review

Download or read book Using Academic Program Review written by Robert J. Barak and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 1995-12-19 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about proper implementation of program review. Extensive advise is available to help those implementing or revitalizing program review processes to avoid common pitfalls and build strengths into the processes. A factor for gauging the effectiveness of program review is the extent to which results of program reveiws are used for other meaningful purposes. Literature on the use of review results is less prevalent. Institutional researchers and others need to know more about program review's role in program improvement and institutional decision-making. Questions that need to be answered include the following: Are the program review reports and recommendations an integral part of the institution's budget process? What is the role of academic program review in strategic planning? Can the program review process be linked to the institution's outcomes assessment process? The purpose of this volume is to provide planners and institutional researchers with information on the uses of program review results in colleges and universities. This is the 86th issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Institutional Research. For more information on the series, please see the Journals and Periodicals page.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive history of evaluation in American higher education. In Grading the College, Scott M. Gelber offers a comprehensive history of evaluating teaching and learning in higher education. He complicates the conventional narrative that portrays evaluation as a newfangled assault on the integrity of higher education while acknowledging that there are many compelling reasons to oppose those practices. The evaluation of teaching and learning, Gelber argues, presented genuine dilemmas that have attracted the attention of faculty members and academic leaders since the 1920s. Especially during the peak era of faculty authority that followed the end of the Second World War, significant numbers of professors and administrators believed that evaluation might improve institutional performance, reduce the bias inherent in traditional methods of supervision, strengthen communication with laypersons, and encourage a more deliberate focus on the distinctive goals of college. Gelber reveals the extent to which professors and academic interest groups participated in the development of our most common evaluation instruments, including student course questionnaires, achievement tests, surveys, rubrics, rankings, and accreditation self-studies. Although these efforts may seem distant from the present era of shortsighted scrutiny and ill-conceived comparisons, Gelber demonstrates that the evaluation of college teaching and learning has long consisted of a set of intellectually sophisticated questions that have engaged, and could continue to engage, faculty members and their advocates. By providing a deeper understanding of how evaluation operated before the dawn of high-stakes accountability, Grading the College seeks to promote productive conversations about current attempts to define and measure the purposes of American higher education.

Book Assessing Student Outcomes Why Who What How

Download or read book Assessing Student Outcomes Why Who What How written by J. Fredericks Volkwein and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-11-22 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers administrators and practitioners a summary guide to assessment in higher education, from the reasons for undertaking assessment to the delivery of findings. It opens with the questions that precede an effective study and drive research design: To what extent is the study aimed at educational improvement, and to what extent is it aimed at external accountability? Are the results expected to demonstrate goal attainment, improvement, comparison to others, meeting standards, cost-effective investment? What is the population from whom assessment data are being collected: Are we measuring the knowledge and skills of individuals and making decisions about their remediation, certification, or development? Or are we sampling from particular groups of students and comparing them to each other, or perhaps to themselves over time? The core of the volume is devoted to the objects of assessment: basic skills, general education knowledge, attainment in the major, personal growth, attitudes and satisfaction, and alumni outcomes, keeping in mind both cognitive and noncognitive measures. One chapter describes common obstacles to effective assessment; others describe conceptual models, research methods, and data collection strategies and instruments. The concluding chapter underscores the importance of communicating research results effectively. This is a special volume of the Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly report series New Directions for Institutional Research. Always timely and comprehensive, New Directions for Institutional Research provides planners and administrators in all types of academic institutions with guidelines in such areas as resource coordination, information analysis, program evaluation, and institutional management.
