This is the first English translation of Baron Percy’s notebooks, containing his interesting, revealing, and informative testimony of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic campaigns in which he played an active role, as the most senior surgeon in the French Army, from 1799-1807. In his journal, Percy writes intimately about his life on campaign. He recounts his experiences across Europe, particularly in Switzerland (Helvetia), Germany, and Poland. The journal shows Percy’s delight at seeing his surgeons recognized for their work at Eylau, and his notes express his shock at the brazen corruption of military officials and the indiscriminate pillaging to which the French army frequently resorted. He recounts his audiences with Napoleon, during which his pleas for more resources and a more professional military surgical corps frequently fell on deaf ears. Details that may have seemed trivial to Percy’s contemporaries – about food, accommodation, dress, and transport – now offer a vital insight into the persistent struggles, and occasional pleasures, of those who followed Napoleon on his quest to conquer Europe. Percy documents his experiences of some of the major battles of the period; namely, Jena, Eylau, and Friedland. As a surgeon, he witnessed the enormous scale of devastation wrought by these significant battles, so often glorified in the historiography as tactical successes. His descriptions are meticulous and personal; injuries are described scientifically, their stark details offering a vivid and horrifying picture of the aftermath of the fighting. Book excerpt: In the Spring of 1813, the French army was just a shadow of the Grande Armée that had travelled to Moscow a year earlier. So for his new German campaign, Napoleon quickly needed a new army. Again conscripts were summoned throughout the French Empire. The same applied to 24-year-old medical student Carolus Blomme from rural Flanders. He was not called up for the army, but as a surgeon in the service de santé, Napoleon?s military medical service. Carolus travelled via Mainz and Dresden to Leipzig, where he attended the 'Battle of the Nations' in mid-October, which the French army lost again. Later he was captured by the Russians in Worms and released as a Dutchman. In the icy winter of 1814 he travelled via Düsseldorf to Amsterdam and waited until the Coalition armies had also liberated Flanders. On his nine-month journey, Carolus kept a diary - in French - somewhat similar to the report of a grand tour. 0In this book, the experiences and journey of Carolus Blomme are set in the historical context of Napoleon?s medical service, contagion and diseases in the French army, and hardship and suffering of the French conscripts. It is followed by the full English translation of his diary.

This is followed by an in-depth explanation of the archaeological excavation of the gravesite, the cataloguing of the bones and number of people buried (and their gender as there were not only males ), artefacts, including buttons and pieces of uniforms and equipment from many of Napoleons regiments, but no side arms as these would not have been thrown into the grave, and the history of the ongoing restoration of these artefacts.
