Book excerpt: An artifact from ancient history determines humanity's future in this action-packed sci-fi adventure-danger, romance, and a warning from space. A papyrus scroll delivered to an Egyptian pharaoh is misunderstood then lost for thousands of years until courageous archeologists unearth it in the twentieth century. They're stunned to learn the message wasn't meant for ancient eyes. Instead, it addresses humans living three thousand years later. As the scroll works its way through several government agencies, scientists and engineers realize its true power. It's not a message. It's a blueprint. The scroll is a design for a spaceship able to reach Mars. Major Mike Carroll is quickly assigned to an agency specializing in highly classified missions. He will lead a crew of two men and two women, chosen for their unique skills. But they have no idea what awaits them. When they arrive on Mars they discover much of what is known about the red planet's history is wrong and danger confronts them at every turn. There is also a shocking surprise. They're not alone and they are being watched closely. Their choices will impact humanity's future-and that of the entire universe.

Book From Habitability to Life on Mars

Download or read book From Habitability to Life on Mars written by Nathalie A. Cabrol and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Habitability to Life on Mars explores the current state of knowledge and questions on the past habitability of Mars and the role that rapid environmental changes may have played in the ability of prebiotic chemistry to transition to life. It investigates the role that such changes may have played in the preservation of biosignatures in the geological record and what this means for exploration strategies. Throughout the book, the authors show how the investigation of terrestrial analogs to early Martian habitats under various climates and environmental extremes provide critical clues to understand where, what and how to search for biosignatures on Mars. The authors present an introduction to the newest developments and state-of-the-art remote and in situ detection strategies and technologies that are being currently developed to support the upcoming ExoMars and Mars 2020 missions. They show how the current orbital and ground exploration is guiding the selection for future landing sites. Finally, the book concludes by discussing the critical question of the implications and ethics of finding life on Mars. Edited by the lead on a NASA project that searches for habitability and life on Mars leading to the Mars 2020 mission Presents the evidence, questions and answers we have today (including a summary of the current state of knowledge in advance of the ESA ExoMars and NASA Mars 2020 missions) Includes contributions from authors directly involved in past, current and upcoming Mars missions Provides key information as to how Mars rovers, such as ExoMars and Mars 2020, will address the search for life on Mars with their instrumentation

Book Chronicles of Mars Volume I

Download or read book Chronicles of Mars Volume I written by Edgar Rice Burroughs and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 803 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote the Barsoom series. It inspired a number of well-known 20th century science fiction writers, including Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke, and was also inspirational for many scientists in the fields of space exploration and the search for extraterrestrial life, including Carl Sagan. The first book in the trilogy is A Princess of Mars, a science fantasy novel full of swordplay and daring feats. It is considered a classic example of 20th century pulp fiction. It is also the beginning of the planetary romance, a sub-genre of science fantasy that became highly popular in the following decades. Its early chapters also contain elements of the Western. The story is set on Mars, imagined as a dying planet with a harsh desert environment. The second book is The Gods of Mars, a 1918 science fiction novel. It is most closely related to the planetary romance genre, similar to sword and sorcery, but including scientific aspects. Planetary romances mostly take place on the surface of an alien world (Mars, in this case), frequently include sword fighting, monsters, supernatural elements such as telepathic abilities, and civilizations similar to Earth in pre-technological eras, particularly with the inclusion of kingdoms, empires or religious societies. The third book is The Warlord of Mars a science fiction novel. Burroughs's vision of Mars was loosely inspired by astronomical speculation of the time, when Mars was seen as a formerly Earthlike world which was becoming less hospitable to life due to its advanced age, and its newly observed canals. In the novels, scarce water is distributed through these canals. In this world, the main character, John Carter, discovers fantastic creatures and ancient mysterious Martian races. The action crosses the planet from one civilization hidden in the southern polar ice-cap to another hidden in the northern polar ice-cap.

Book excerpt: John Carter, veteran of the American Civil War, finds himself transported from Arizona to Mars when hiding from attackers in a secret cave. The inhabitants greet him, referring to the planet as Barsoom, and Carter finds that he has superhuman strength and agility due to the different gravity of this new world. After joining the nomadic tribe of green, six-limbed Martians called Tharks, he rises through the ranks and earns the respect and friendship of one of the chiefs. Until, that is, the Tharks capture Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium and a member of the red, humanoid Martians. Rescuing Dejah Thoris, Carter attempts to return her to her people, finding himself at the centre of a conflict that reaches across Martian society, all while falling in love. Can he save Barsoom? What of Earth? Does he want to return, or would he rather stay with Dejah Thoris? A Princess of Mars was first serialised in 1912, and to celebrate its centenary we have collected it and its two sequels - The Gods of Mars and The Warlord of Mars - in this beautiful Golden Age Masterwork.

Book Biosignatures for Astrobiology

Download or read book Biosignatures for Astrobiology written by Barbara Cavalazzi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at providing a brief but broad overview of biosignatures. The topics addressed range from prebiotic signatures in extraterrestrial materials to the signatures characterising extant life as well as fossilised life, biosignatures related to space, and space flight instrumentation to detect biosignatures either in situ or from orbit. The book ends with philosophical reflections on the implications of life elsewhere. In the 15 chapters written by an interdisciplinary team of experts, it provides both detailed explanations on the nature of biosignatures as well as useful case studies showing how they are used and identified in ancient rocks, for example. One case study addresses the controversial finding of traces of fossil life in a meteorite from Mars. The book will be of interest not only to astrobiologists but also to terrestrial paleontologists as well as any reader interested in the prospects of finding a second example of life on another planet.

Book An Astrobiology Strategy for the Exploration of Mars

Download or read book An Astrobiology Strategy for the Exploration of Mars written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-06-26 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three recent developments have greatly increased interest in the search for life on Mars. The first is new information about the Martian environment including evidence of a watery past and the possibility of atmospheric methane. The second is the possibility of microbial viability on Mars. Finally, the Vision for Space Exploration initiative included an explicit directive to search for the evidence of life on Mars. These scientific and political developments led NASA to request the NRC's assistance in formulating an up-to-date integrated astrobiology strategy for Mars exploration. Among other topics, this report presents a review of current knowledge about possible life on Mars; an astrobiological assessment of current Mars missions; a review of Mars-mission planetary protection; and findings and recommendations. The report notes that the greatest increase in understanding of Mars will come from the collection and return to Earth of a well-chosen suite of Martian surface materials.
