Book A Summer Paradise Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Summer Paradise Classic Reprint written by F. S. Presbrey and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Summer Paradise The beloved and venerated Bryant, in whose poems we find many songs to nature set in rhythmic metre said: "Go abroad upon the paths of Nature; And when all its voices whisper, and its silent things Are breathing the deep beauty of the world, Kneel at its ample altar." The Adirondacks may not have been the inspiration of these lines, but there is no spot where the voices of Nature whisper in sweeter cadence, or with more enticing or bewitching harmony of tone. Silence and solitude appeal to most of us with a voice that is almost human. In it we recognize the vast domain of the world of matter, the sense of infinity lays hold of us, and a responsive chord goes out from our inmost soul, proclaiming in indisputable emotions our kinship with Nature. It is a dull soul which does not awaken to the glories of a magnificent sunset, or which is not stirred by the majesty of towering mountains, the deep solitude and stillness of the forest, or the dashing of the mighty waves of the sea upon the beach. Book The Summer Paradise in History

Download or read book The Summer Paradise in History written by Warwick Stevens Carpenter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Summer Paradise in History: A Compilation of Fact and Tradition, Covering Lake George, Lake Champlain, the Adirondack Mountains, and Other Sections Reached by the Rail and Steamer Lines of the Delaware and Hudson Company Great islands appeared, leagues in extent: Isle la Motte, Long Island, Grande Isle. Channels where ships might float and broad reaches of expanding water stretched before them, and Champlain entered the lake which preserves his name to posterity... Their goal was the rocky promontory where Fort Ticonderoga was long afterward built. Thence, they would pass the outlet of Lake George, and launch their canoes again on that Como of the wilderness, whose waters, limpid as a fountain-head, stretched far southward between their flanking mountains. Landing at the future site of Fort William Henry, they would carry their canoes through the forest to the River Hudson, and, descending it, attack, perhaps, some outlying town of the Mohawks. In the next century this chain of lakes and rivers became the grand highway of savage and civilized war, a bloody debatable ground linked to memories of momentous conflicts. Henry, novelist and former 'angry young man' turned grumpy old reactionary, decides to fight the will and prove their father was insane. Heavenly repose, he used to say, would not be nearly as sublime if there were not mortals in the world to bestir themselves and culti vate the field of art with the sweat of their brows. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Joys: The Story of a New England Summer I have been counting my Springs not all of them and it is quite ten years since I was in the country, especially this dear New England country, at this season of the year. To be sure, my Adam and I have had each Spring a few rapturous hours with the apple blossoms in our private Paradise of crab trees and hawthorns in the woods; but to live in an orchard during the bridal season of the year, that comes but seldom in the life of a city woman, and alas! Almost never to a city man. If only my Adam could per suade that severe angel with the flaming sword, whose name is Necessity, to look the other way for a mo ment while he crept past into Paradise with me, my cup of joy would be as full as the Psalmist's; and his ran over. Book Take Time for Paradise

Download or read book Take Time for Paradise written by A. Bartlett Giamatti and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A philosophical musing on sports and play, this wholly inspiring and utterly charming reissue of Bart Giamatti's long-out-of-print final book, Take Time for Paradise, puts baseball in the context of American life and leisure. Giamatti begins with the conviction that our use of free time tells us something about who we are. He explores the concepts of leisure, American-style. And in baseball, the quintessential American game, he finds its ultimate expression. "Sports and leisure are our reiteration of the hunger for paradise- for freedom untrammeled." Filled with pithy truths about such resonant subjects as ritual, self-betterment, faith, home, and community, Take Time for Paradise gives us much more than just baseball. These final, eloquent thoughts of "the philosopher king of baseball" (Seattle Weekly) are a joyful, reverent celebration of the sport Giamatti loved and the country that created it.

During the war bombs ripped out the entire centre of the collar and you can still see the dirty scars made by Shells on the grassy slopes above the town. But two things remain exactly as they were when I lived with my mother there and, in the long' blistering summer of 1921, when I was eighteen, I first met an officer in the guards, a man of forty, named Captain Archie Blaine. The first thing that has never changed at all is the castle itself. It has the imperishable and inviolate air that belongs to great churches and high mountains. But sometimes. Book Reading the Classics and Paradise Lost

Download or read book Reading the Classics and Paradise Lost written by William Malin Porter and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milton?s early commentators?Henry Todd, Thomas Newton, Joseph Addison, and others?not only knew their classics well, they took them seriously as models of literary excellence and repositories of values. In the twentieth century, however, the classics have become mere ?background.? As a consequence, William M. Porter argues, not only is the foundational dimension of Milton?s poetry now hardly visible, even to scholars, but the potential of Milton?s poetry to revitalize the reading of the classics has been diminished. In this insightful study, Porter attempts once again to read both the classics and Milton?s epic poem sensitively and intelligently. He exposes the recklessly speculative and tendentious character of much earlier work on Milton?s allusions, in which allusions were promiscuously posited and in which Paradise Lost was too often regarded naively as triumphing over the classics. Porter demonstrates that Milton?s allusions, in which allusions to the classics, while fewer than has been supposed, are rich with wit, irony, and thought that can be grasped only by a reader with a double perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noted for its magnificent architecture and extraordinary history, the Yuanming Yuan is China's most famous imperial garden. The complex was begun in the early eighteenth century, and construction continued over the next 150 years. While Chinese historians, and many Chinese in general, view the garden as the paramount achievement of Chinese architecture and landscape design, almost nothing is known about the Yuanming Yuan in the West. A Paradise Lost is the first comprehensive study of the palatial garden complex in a Western language. Written in a broad and engaging style, Young-tsu Wong brings "the garden of perfect brightness" to life as he leads readers on a grand tour of its architecture and history. Wong begins by inspecting the garden's physical appearance and its architectural elements. He discusses the origin and evolution of these structures and the aesthetics of their design and arrangement. Throughout he refers to maps and original models of individual buildings and other existing gardens of the Ming-Qing period, including the well-preserved Yihe Yuan and the Chengde Summer Mountain Retreat in Rehe. A special feature of the book is its exploration of the activities and daily life of the royal household.
