Book excerpt: A study on the provenance of Late Permian strata of the fluvial Abrahamskraal Formation was carried out on detrital muscovite, zircon and petrographic provenance analyses were conducted on Late Permian strata of the fluvial Abrahamskraal Formation (lower Beaufort Group) in the south western Karoo Basin. The medium to fine-grained lithic arkose sandstone samples of the Abrahamskraal Formation in the Oubergpas and Bloukrans outcrops, Western Cape Province, show two main sources, one magmatic . and a recycled orogen. The samples contain three U-Pb detrital zircon age populations ranging in age from Mesoproterozotc to Cambrian and Late Permian. The first two populations correspond to main elements of South African geological history, the Namaqua-Natal Basement and the Cape Granite (and Ross Orogeny). The youngest population, corroborated by the petrographic evidence collected, advocate for the activity of a southern magmatic arc the location of which will be discussed. Eighty-two individual muscovite grains were dated by step-heating with the 40 ArP9 Ar laser microprobe. Probability distribution plots reveal three prominent age clusters, indicating cooling of the source rocks below 350--420°C in the Mesoproterozoic, Silurian-Ordovician and Late Permian. Precise calibration of sedimentation age through zircon dating of several ashbeds in the study area enables the thermal evolution of the source area in space and time to be precisely traced. The tight youngest cluster of Permian ages supports the correlation of the sedimentary deposit with the uplift and erosion of the Cape Fold Belt, placing its discussed juvenile deformation to at least ~270±5Ma. The Silurian age cluster, although loose and imprecise, may represent an older stage of the Cape Fold Belt, but can be also interpreted as mixed ages of older grains (possibly Saldanian) . partially reset by the Permian greenschist-facies metamorphism.
