Book Hydrodynamics and Stability and Control of a Tandem Propeller Submarine

Download or read book Hydrodynamics and Stability and Control of a Tandem Propeller Submarine written by Roy S. Rice and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tandem propeller concept of submarine propulsion and control provides for the generation of all required forces and moments in a pair of large hub-to-tip diameter ratio propellers with collectively and cyclically movable blades. The feasibility of the concept has been demonstrated by the results of a free-running model test program. The results of earlier studies, including captive model tests, have been combined to develop a controllable freerunning model system on which maneuverability and controllability data in the counter-thrusting mode of operation have been obtained. Nonlinear effects in the control forces and moments required the development of a specialized control system to produce pure vehicular motions in response to pure input commands. The control system requirements are further complicated by the basic static instability of the uncontrolled vehicle even at moderate speeds. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the vehicle and the control system design are discussed in detail. Analyses of the free-running test data attest to the efficacy of the system employed. An appendix in which the me/hanical and electrical designs of equipment used in the test program is provided. (Author).

Book The Electric Propulsion of Ships

Download or read book The Electric Propulsion of Ships written by H. M. Hobart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electric Propulsion of Ships Much attention is now being given to propositions relating to the electric propulsion of ships. A study of the circumstances reveals a remarkable accordance of means and requirements. The case may be briefly outlined as follow's: - The double transformation of energy in the form of work into energy in the form of electricity and again from electricity into work, may often, when the operations are on a large scale, be effected at an overall efficiency of 90 per cent, and even higher. In other words, at the cost of a loss of 10 per cent, in energy and of the initial and maintenance cost of the electrical machinery, engineers can interpose an electric drive between the prime mover and the machinery to be driven. The object of interposing an electric drive is to obtain advantages of flexibility which will permit of securing greater efficiency both in the prime mover and in the driven machinery, which, in the case of ship propulsion, is the propeller. Further great advantages relate to the superior means of control rendered available with electric drive. In the case of ship propulsion, the prime mover has, until recently, almost always been a reciprocating engine. But during the last ten years, many ships have been fitted with steam turbines. As applied to ship propulsion, the steam turbine has not met with any approach to the almost unqualified success which has attended its use on land. This is chiefly because, in applying the steam turbine to ship propulsion, it has been necessary to adopt speeds several times lower than have been customary with land turbines. This has been necessary owing to the well-known circumstance that the efficiency attainable with the screw propeller is lower (for a given power) the higher the speed of revolutions. It was a realization of this circumstance, more than any other consideration, which first led to serious propositions for the electrical driving of large ships. Book Feasibility of a Novel Electric Power Propulsion System nepps for a Submarine Volume Iii Hydrodynamic Model Tests

Download or read book Feasibility of a Novel Electric Power Propulsion System nepps for a Submarine Volume Iii Hydrodynamic Model Tests written by A. J. Izzo and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the results of tests of a 1/28 scale model of a Novel Electric Power Propulsion System (NEPPS) and prediction of pro totype performance. Analysis of the test re sults leads to the following conclusions: (1) comparison of model cavitation data indicates that the cavitation performance of the NEPPS propeller is better than that of the conventional propeller; (2) torque measurements over a wide range of operating conditions indicate that propeller torque does not exceed the values originally assumed in the design of the elec trical machinery; (3) tests made at zero ad vance speed both for forward and reverse pro pulsor rotation indicates very good reverse thrust characteristics, the reverse thrust being 78% of the forward thrust; (4) the propulsive efficiency, based on the power at the blades of the model, is 90%; (5) self-propulsion was achieved at an advance ratio of 1.134; and (6) the NEPPS prototype submarine will attain a speed of approximately 24 knots. Book Electric Boats and Ships

Download or read book Electric Boats and Ships written by Kevin Desmond and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electric propulsion for boats was developed in the early 19th century and--despite the advent of the internal combustion engine--continued with the perfecting of the modern turbo-electric ship. Sustainable and hybrid technologies, pioneered in small inland watercraft toward the end of the 20th century, have in recent years been scaled up to create integrated electric drives for the largest ocean-going vessels. This comprehensive history traces the birth and rebirth of the electric boat from 1835 to the present, celebrating the Golden Age of electric launches, 1880-1910.

Book The Hydrodynamics and Stability Control Tandem Propeller Submarine Phase Ii

Download or read book The Hydrodynamics and Stability Control Tandem Propeller Submarine Phase Ii written by E. Schroeder and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrodynamic and stability and control character istics are investigated for a novel submarine configuration employing tandem, large hub-to-tip diameter ratio propellers, the blades of which can be pitched both collectively and cyclicly. Earlier analyses, using combined blade element and momentum theory to describe the forces and moments produced by the propellers, are refined and extended to include the effect of cyclic pitch on propeller-induced inflow. A preliminary analysis of shrouded propeller hydrodynamics is included. Stability and control is investigated for Tandem Propeller Submarine (TPS) operation over the forward speed range from 0 to 40 ft/sec with both propellers thrusting. Low-speed oper ation is also investigated with one propeller thrusting and one counter-thrusting. Automatic control techniques for improving the stability and control characteristics of the TPS are pre sented. (Author).
