Book A Study on the Use of Manual and Virtual Manipulatives to Support 5th Grade Student Learning of Fractions

Download or read book A Study on the Use of Manual and Virtual Manipulatives to Support 5th Grade Student Learning of Fractions written by Nessren N. Elaile and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the use of manual and virtual manipulatives, in order to gain a better understanding of the impact of their use by 5th grade students learning fraction concepts. Manipulatives are often used during classroom experiences to reinforce abstract concepts and provide deeper understanding. For this study, students were exposed to both manual and virtual manipulatives in order to develop an understanding of how each supported student understanding and attitudes. The evident success of using manipulatives in improving student's understanding of fractions was apparent based on improved scores on a posttest. Most students benefitted from the use of both types ofmanipulatives, whether they were manual or virtual. Therefore, both virtual and manual manipulatives were found to support student learning of concepts related to addition of fractions. Based on a survey and teacher observations, students were found to have positive attitudes towards the use of both manipulatives as well. Particular attention was paid to the use of virtual manipulatives in the study due to the newness of this resource. Virtual manipulatives were found to support the learning of fractions by aiding in the visual representation and because the technology enabled students to concentrate on the conceptual knowledge and not computation. Virtual manipulatives also gave second language learners a way to express their thinking and understanding of patterns. KEYWORDS: mathematics, fractions, attitudes, denominators, manipulatives, virtual.

Book An Exploratory Study of Fifth grade Students0 9 Reasoning about the Relationship Between Fractions and Decimals when Using Number Line based Virtual Manipulatives

Download or read book An Exploratory Study of Fifth grade Students0 9 Reasoning about the Relationship Between Fractions and Decimals when Using Number Line based Virtual Manipulatives written by Scott Smith and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the relationship between fractions and decimals is an important step in developing an overall understanding of rational numbers. Research has demonstrated the feasibility of technology in the form of virtual manipulatives for facilitating students0́9 meaningful understanding of rational number concepts. This exploratory dissertation study was conducted for the two closely related purposes: first, to investigate a sample of fifth-grade students0́9 reasoning regarding the relationship between fractions and decimals for fractions with terminating decimal representations while using virtual manipulative incorporating parallel number lines; second, to investigate the affordances of the virtual manipulatives for supporting the students0́9 reasoning about the decimal-fraction relationship. The study employed qualitative methods in which the researcher collected and analyzed data from fifth-grade students0́9 verbal explanations, hand gestures, and mouse cursor motions. During the course of the study, four fifth-grade students participated in an initial clinical interview, five task-based clinical interviews while using the number line-based virtual manipulatives, and a final clinical interview. The researcher coded the data into categories that indicated the students0́9 synthetic models, their strategies for converting between fractions and decimals, and evidence of students0́9 accessing the affordances of the virtual manipulatives (e.g., students0́9 hand gestures, mouse cursor motions, and verbal explanations). The study yielded results regarding the students0́9 conceptions of the decimal-fraction relationship. The students0́9 synthetic models primarily showed their recognition of the relationship between the unit fraction 1/8 and its decimal 0.125. Additionally, the students used a diversity of strategies for converting between fractions and decimals. Moreover, results indicate that the pattern of strategies students used for conversions of decimals to fractions was different from the pattern of strategies students used for conversions of fractions to decimals. The study also yielded results for the affordances of the virtual manipulatives for supporting the students0́9 reasoning regarding the decimal-fraction relationship. The analysis of students0́9 hand gestures, mouse cursor motions, and verbal explanations revealed the affordances of alignment and partition of the virtual manipulatives for supporting the students0́9 reasoning about the decimal-fraction relationship. Additionally, the results indicate that the students drew on the affordances of alignment and partition more frequently during decimal to fraction conversions than during fraction to decimal conversions.

Book Technology s Impact on Fraction Learning

Download or read book Technology s Impact on Fraction Learning written by Maria Mendiburo and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fractions are among the most difficult mathematical concepts for elementary school students to master (Behr, Harel, Post, & Lesh, 1992; Bezuk & Cramer, 1989; Moss & Case, 1999). Research indicates that manipulatives (e.g. fractions circles, fractions strips) positively impact students' conceptual and procedural understanding of fractions without impeding their ability to complete algorithmic procedures involving fractions (Cramer & Henry, 2002). Unfortunately, a variety of practical and pedagogical challenges associated with using manipulatives during instruction make it difficult for teachers to implement them effectively in classrooms. As a result, students receive far less exposure to manipulatives than the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) recommends for students in grades K-8 (Char, 1991; Hatfield, 1994; Hodge & Brumbaugh, 2003; National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2000). This study examines the following research questions: (1) Are there differences in students' knowledge of fraction magnitude when they are taught basic fraction concepts using virtual manipulatives compared to when they are taught basic fraction concepts using physical manipulatives?; and (2) Are students able to complete more practice exercises and/or more games using virtual manipulatives than physical manipulatives? The results of the post-assessment data collected in this study support Clements' (1999, 1996) hypothesis that computers can provide students with virtual representations of mathematical concepts that are just as meaningful as physical manipulatives. The results of the analyses of the data collected in the practice logs overall (i.e. across both weeks of the intervention) and during the second week of the intervention provide quantitative evidence that virtual manipulatives are more time-efficient than physical manipulatives. It appears that gender is not a strong predictor of the outcomes associated with manipulative-based instruction. (Contains 1 table.).

Book excerpt: For years, the teaching and learning of fractions has been associated with rote memorization. But this mechanical approach to instruction—which strips students of an ability to reason or make sense of math—has resulted in a failure of understanding. Author Monica Neagoy, drawing on decades of research studies, evidence from teacher practice, and 25 years of experience working around the world with teachers, students, and parents, addresses seven big ideas in the teaching and learning of fractions in grades 2–6. Each idea is supported by a vignette from a real classroom, common misconceptions, a thorough unpacking of productive mathematical thinking, and several multistep and thought-provoking problems for teachers to explore. She offers three fundamental reasons why it’s imperative for us to take a closer look at how we teach fractions: 1. Fractions play a key role in students’ feelings about mathematics. 2. Fractions are fundamental to school math and daily life. 3. Fractions are foundational to success in algebra. While a solid grounding in algebra is necessary for a STEM career, the worthy goal of “algebra for all” will not be possible until “fractions for all” is a reality. Unpacking Fractions provides teachers with concrete strategies for achieving that reality—in short, helping all students gain the knowledge they need to feel at ease with fractions.

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2021 in the subject Didactics - Mathematics, grade: 1.0, , course: Bachelor in Elementary Education, language: English, abstract: This paper assessed the performance of Grade Five learners in Mathematics 5 of Mayor AS Fortuna Memorial Elementary School, Guizo, Mandaue City during the first quarter of school year 2020 -2021. To analyze the data, the researcher made use of the input – process – output (IPO) continuum, which served as the structure and guide for the direction of the research. The inputs of the study will show the effectiveness of intervention program. These inputs will be obtained through the pre-test and post test scores. The process of this research includes the administering the pre-test, intervention through innovation remedial program and validation, presentation including the statistical treatment thereof, and analyses use in the interpretation of the data. The findings of the study reveal that the grade five learners performed better in performance tasks with a mean percentage score of 67.33% than the written works with a mean percentage score of 80.50%. This study reveals that situative perspective in solving routine and non-routine problems involving addition and/or subtraction of fractions using appropriate problem solving strategies and tools and in solving routine or non-routine problems involving division without or with any of the other operations of fractions and whole numbers using appropriate problem solving strategies and tools significantly affects teaching and learning fractions while it does not affect in solving routine or non-routine problems involving multiplication without or with addition or subtraction of fractions and whole numbers using appropriate problem solving strategies and tools.

Book Fraction Models that Promote Understanding for Elementary Students

Download or read book Fraction Models that Promote Understanding for Elementary Students written by Lynette Hull and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the use of the set, area, and linear models of fraction representation to enhance elementary students' conceptual understanding of fractions. Students' preferences regarding the set, area, and linear models of fractions during independent work was also investigated. This study took place in a 5th grade class consisting of 21 students in a suburban public elementary school. Students participated in classroom activities which required them to use manipulatives to represent fractions using the set, area, and linear models. Students also had experiences using the models to investigate equivalent fractions, compare fractions, and perform operations. Students maintained journals throughout the study, completed a pre and post assessment, participated in class discussions, and participated in individual interviews concerning their fraction model preference. Analysis of the data revealed an increase in conceptual understanding. The data concerning student preferences were inconsistent, as students' choices during independent work did not always reflect the preferences indicated in the interviews.
