Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1. Introduction The place of minds in reality is a problem that philosophers across traditions and time have thought about. Within western philosophy, since Descartes, this has taken the shape of the mind-body problem. In contemporary west ern analytic philosophy, one particular aspect of this age-old problem has evoked considerable attention and has come to be known as the hard problem of consciousness or the hard part of the mind- body problem1 - the metaphysical question of how there can be conscious, mental phenomena in a physical world . Metaphysics is the philosophical study of what-there-is and what-it-is.2 The metaphysical question about the mind is then the question of whether our ontology ought to include the mind (and mental properties), or whether an ontology of physical entities would suffice. Further, one also needs to explicate what one mean s by the mind and physical entities before one can answer questions of what there is. Broadly, there are two major responses to this question. On the one hand is physicalism, the view that all concrete phenomena including minds and mental phenomena are physical or grounded in physical phenomena. On the other is dualism, the view that minds and mental phenomena are a second kind distinct from the physical. While the orthodoxy in contemporary analytic philosophy is physicalism, versions of dualism have remained influential, if only as the opponents that physicalists argue against.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A renowned philosopher of the mind, also known for his groundbreaking work on Buddhism and cognitive science, Evan Thompson combines the latest neuroscience research on sleep, dreaming, and meditation with Indian and Western philosophy of mind, casting new light on the self and its relation to the brain. Thompson shows how the self is a changing process, not a static thing. When we are awake we identify with our body, but if we let our mind wander or daydream, we project a mentally imagined self into the remembered past or anticipated future. As we fall asleep, the impression of being a bounded self distinct from the world dissolves, but the self reappears in the dream state. If we have a lucid dream, we no longer identify only with the self within the dream. Our sense of self now includes our dreaming self, the "I" as dreamer. Finally, as we meditate—either in the waking state or in a lucid dream—we can observe whatever images or thoughts arise and how we tend to identify with them as "me." We can also experience sheer awareness itself, distinct from the changing contents that make up our image of the self. Contemplative traditions say that we can learn to let go of the self, so that when we die we can witness its dissolution with equanimity. Thompson weaves together neuroscience, philosophy, and personal narrative to depict these transformations, adding uncommon depth to life's profound questions. Contemplative experience comes to illuminate scientific findings, and scientific evidence enriches the vast knowledge acquired by contemplatives.

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Consciousness written by Rocco J. Gennaro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 775 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an explosion of work on consciousness in the last 30–40 years from philosophers, psychologists, and neurologists. Thus, there is a need for an interdisciplinary, comprehensive volume in the field that brings together contributions from a wide range of experts on fundamental and cutting-edge topics. The Routledge Handbook of Consciousness fills this need and makes each chapter’s importance understandable to students and researchers from a variety of backgrounds. Designed to complement and better explain primary sources, this volume is a valuable "first-stop" publication for undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in any course on "Consciousness," "Philosophy of Mind," or "Philosophy of Psychology," as well as a valuable handbook for researchers in these fields who want a useful reference to have close at hand. The 34 chapters, all published here for the first time, are divided into three parts: Part I covers the "History and Background Metaphysics" of consciousness, such as dualism, materialism, free will, and personal identity, and includes a chapter on Indian philosophy. Part II is on specific "Contemporary Theories of Consciousness," with chapters on representational, information integration, global workspace, attention-based, and quantum theories. Part III is entitled "Major Topics in Consciousness Research," with chapters on psychopathologies, dreaming, meditation, time, action, emotion, multisensory experience, animal and robot consciousness, and the unity of consciousness. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction and concludes with a list of "Related Topics," as well as a list of "References," making the volume indispensable for the newcomer and experienced researcher alike.

Book The Hidden Spring A Journey to the Source of Consciousness

Download or read book The Hidden Spring A Journey to the Source of Consciousness written by Mark Solms and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory new theory of consciousness that returns emotions to the center of mental life. For Mark Solms, one of the boldest thinkers in contemporary neuroscience, discovering how consciousness comes about has been a lifetime’s quest. Scientists consider it the "hard problem" because it seems an impossible task to understand why we feel a subjective sense of self and how it arises in the brain. Venturing into the elementary physics of life, Solms has now arrived at an astonishing answer. In The Hidden Spring, he brings forward his discovery in accessible language and graspable analogies. Solms is a frank and fearless guide on an extraordinary voyage from the dawn of neuropsychology and psychoanalysis to the cutting edge of contemporary neuroscience, adhering to the medically provable. But he goes beyond other neuroscientists by paying close attention to the subjective experiences of hundreds of neurological patients, many of whom he treated, whose uncanny conversations expose much about the brain’s obscure reaches. Most importantly, you will be able to recognize the workings of your own mind for what they really are, including every stray thought, pulse of emotion, and shift of attention. The Hidden Spring will profoundly alter your understanding of your own subjective experience.

Book The Subject of Experience

Download or read book The Subject of Experience written by Galen Strawson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the conscious subject, the subject of experience, in particular the human subject-the self, the person. Galen Strawson examines the phenomenology of the self-he asks what is it like to have or be a self or to feel that one is or has a self-and the metaphysics of the self-Is there really such a thing as the self? If so, what is its nature? He develops a novel approach to the metaphysical questions out of the results of the phenomenological investigation, and argues, against those who say that the self is just the human being, that we can legitimately distinguish self and human being. At the same time he raises doubts about how long selves can be supposed to last, insofar as they are distinct from human beings. Moving on to the ethics and moral psychology of the self, Strawson asks whether we can really be said to lose anything in dying. He criticizes the popular notion of the narrative self, and emphasizes the differences between 'Endurers' or 'Diachronics'-people who feel that they are the same person when they consider their past and future-and 'Transients' or 'Episodics'-people who do not feel this. Strawson also considers the logic of the word T, the first-person pronoun, and the reflexive structure of conscious awareness, before examining Locke's, Humes and Kant's accounts of the mind and personal identity, and arguing that Locke and Hume have been badly mi sunder stood. The fourteen essays draw on literature and psychology as well as philosophy. Book jacket.

Book The Essence of Being

Download or read book The Essence of Being written by Louisa and published by Sunshine. This book was released on 2023-12-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consciousness is a concept that has fascinated philosophers, scientists, and spiritual seekers for centuries. It lies at the core of our existence, shaping our perceptions, thoughts, and experiences. In this subchapter, we delve deep into the intricate nature of consciousness, attempting to unravel its metaphysical essence. What is consciousness? It is a question that has eluded a definitive answer throughout history. Some describe it as the awareness of our own existence, while others view it as the capacity to experience sensations, thoughts, and emotions. However, consciousness encompasses much more than these simple definitions. Metaphysics explores the nature of reality and the fundamental principles that underlie our existence. When we apply this lens to the study of consciousness, we begin to understand that it is not merely a byproduct of brain activity, but rather a universal force that permeates all of creation. It is the very fabric of our being, connecting us to each other and the world around us. Consciousness is not confined to human beings alone; it extends to all living organisms and possibly even to inanimate objects. The interconnectedness of conscious beings forms a vast network, where each individual entity contributes to the collective consciousness. This interconnectedness hints at a deeper, transcendent nature of consciousness that transcends the boundaries of time and space. To further understand consciousness, we must explore its various dimensions. There is the subjective aspect of consciousness, which encompasses our personal experiences and perceptions. This is the realm of thoughts, emotions, and self-awareness. On the other hand, there is the objective aspect of consciousness, which refers to the underlying universal principles that govern the cosmos. It is the realm of pure awareness, devoid of individuality. Consciousness is not limited to the human mind; it has the potential to expand and evolve. Through practices such as meditation, mindfulness, and self-reflection, we can tap into higher states of consciousness. These altered states open doors to profound insights, expanded awareness, and a deeper connection with the metaphysical realms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most remarkable fact about the universe is that certain parts of it are conscious. Somehow nature has managed to pull the rabbit of experience out of a hat made of mere matter. Making its own contribution to the current, lively debate about the nature of consciousness, Theories of Consciousness introduces variety of approaches to consciousness and explores to what extent scientific understanding of consciousness is possible. Including discussion of key figures, such as Descartes, Foder, Dennett and Chalmers, the book covers identity theories, representational theories, intentionality, externalism, and the new information-based theories.

Book Consciousness and Physicalism

Download or read book Consciousness and Physicalism written by Andreas Elpidorou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consciousness and Physicalism: A Defense of a Research Program explores the nature of consciousness and its place in the world, offering a revisionist account of what it means to say that consciousness is nothing over and above the physical. By synthesizing work in the philosophy of mind, metaphysics, and philosophy of science from the last twenty years and forging a dialogue with contemporary research in the empirical sciences of the mind, Andreas Elpidorou and Guy Dove advance and defend a novel formulation of physicalism. Although physicalism has been traditionally understood to be a metaphysical thesis, Elpidorou and Dove argue that there is an alternative and indeed preferable understanding of physicalism that both renders physicalism a scientifically informed explanatory project and allows us to make important progress in addressing the ontological problem of consciousness. Physicalism, Elpidorou and Dove hold, is best viewed not as a thesis (metaphysical or otherwise) but as an interdisciplinary research program that aims to compositionally explain all natural phenomena that are central to our understanding of our place in nature. Consciousness and Physicalism is replete with philosophical arguments and informed, through and through, by findings in many areas of scientific research. It advances the debate regarding the ontological status of consciousness. It will interest students and scholars in philosophy of mind, metaphysics, philosophy of cognitive science, and philosophy of science. And it will challenge both foes and friends of physicalism.
