Book Decentralization and Intrastate Struggles

Download or read book Decentralization and Intrastate Struggles written by Kristin M. Bakke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no one-size-fits-all decentralized fix to deeply divided and conflict-ridden states. One of the hotly debated policy prescriptions for states facing self-determination demands is some form of decentralized governance - including regional autonomy arrangements and federalism - which grants minority groups a degree of self-rule. Yet the track record of existing decentralized states suggests that these have widely divergent capacity to contain conflicts within their borders. Through in-depth case studies of Chechnya, Punjab and Québec, as well as a statistical cross-country analysis, this book argues that while policy, fiscal approach, and political decentralization can, indeed, be peace-preserving at times, the effects of these institutions are conditioned by traits of the societies they (are meant to) govern. Decentralization may help preserve peace in one country or in one region, but it may have just the opposite effect in a country or region with different ethnic and economic characteristics.

Download or read book Secession written by Marcelo G. Kohen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the Cold War brought about new secessionist aspirations and the strengthening and re-awakening of existing or dormant separatist claims everywhere. The creation of a new independent entity through the separation of part of the territory and population of an existing State raises serious difficulties as to the role of international law. This book offers a comprehensive study of secession from an international law perspective, focusing on practice and applicable rules of international law. It includes theoretical analyses and a scrutiny of practice throughout the world by eighteen distinguished authors from Western and Eastern Europe, North and Sub-Saharan Africa, North and Latin America, and Asia. Core questions are addressed from different perspectives, and in some cases with divergent views. The reader is also exposed to a far-reaching picture of State practice, including some cases which are rarely mentioned and often neglected in scholarly analysis of secession.

Book Contemporary Minority Nationalism

Download or read book Contemporary Minority Nationalism written by Michael Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minority nationalism is a significant not to say potent force in the modern world. In many countries new problems of and for minority nationalism have recently surfaced. This book presents a wide ranging examination of the state of minority nationalism in the 1970s and 1980s. It considers many different cases in detail: Britain, Ireland, the Soviet Union, Canada, France, Spain and South Africa. It explores the political and socio-economic circumstances surrounding minority nationalism, analyses its successes and failures in recent years, and looks at an exhaustive range of issues: the structures and politics of minority nationalist movements, relations with governments, ideology, attitudes to human rights, and so on. Interestingly, it views both Afrikaners in South Africa and Protestants in Northern Ireland as cases of minority nationalists in dominant positions finding it increasingly difficult to maintain their positions.
