Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to explore the lives of six, economically disadvantaged, African American, middle school students who are demonstrating school success to discover how their home, school, and community experiences influenced their academic achievement. A phenomenological inquiry approach was applied in this qualitative study to investigate the lived experiences of the student participants and identify the factors that contributed to their academic achievements in spite of the various challenges they encountered. The qualitative data consisted of three individual interviews. Using a semistructured protocol, questions focused on the students. perceptions of the factors that contributed to their academic success and the challenges they experienced; how the students made meaning of their academic lives in the school setting; and how the students. home and community experiences influenced their academic achievement. The seven step modified van Kaam method was employed to analyze the data obtained from the six student participants. The findings revealed that all six-student participants had the same perception of what it means to be a high achiever. Most of the student participants encountered challenges within family and home factors that varied, but the data revealed perceived negative influences of the community from most participants. However, all of the student participants developed ways to maintain their academic achievement despite their challenges. The student participants attributed their academic success to having an inner will to achieve, working hard, remaining focused, and staying out of trouble. Each of the student participants were goal oriented and aspired to attend college. Most of the student participants shared how their peers served as a positive influence on their academic achievement by providing help with difficult work and serving as a motivator as they engaged in healthy competition. Student participants also identified teacher and parental support as having a positive impact on their academic achievement.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the research has been to examine why middle school students who consistently pass state-mandated tests do poorly in school and thus have to repeat their grade. This qualitative study involved twelve retained seventh grade students. Participants' school records were examined, and eight of their former and current teachers were also interviewed to develop a more complete picture of the students involved and to support data triangulation. Student participants were asked about family, friends, teachers, school life, and future plans and endeavors. Multiple case studies and focus groups were used to answer questions leading to thematic data analysis. Data analysis revealed that students who were retained had a large cadre of personal problems and concerns. From a compilation of the data, I defended the characteristics of a good middle school, a school designed and dedicated to address and meet the particular needs of young adolescents. Retention has had a significant impact on these youngsters and will be a major determinant of their future school success. Subjects of the study were candid about the importance of friendships and the value of maintaining those friendships as they move to the next grade. Students also identified their readily favorite and least favorite teachers. Teachers that cared were highly prized among study participants. Teachers who did not take time to help students individually and those who did not seem to care about the students' problems students were despised. Listening to the voices of students is the first step in designing an effective educational program that best meets their needs. The implication of this study is a model middle school that does just that.

Book Does it Take a Whole Village

Book excerpt: Research indicates that ecological contexts, such as the family and school, surrounding youth are significant influences on their educational outcomes. This study examined the relationship of family, community and school environments and the academic achievement of African American and Hispanic students. In addition, this study sought to examine the interaction between family socioeconomic status and other familial factors in predicting students' self-reported grades and standardized test scores. In a sample of 1,633 eighth graders drawn from the base-year of the public-use National Educational Longitudinal Survey of 1988 (NELS:88), familial and school factors were found to significantly influence students' grades and standardized test scores. Furthermore, family socioeconomic status moderated other family factors, such as parent-child interactions, family resources, and parental involvement, to predict students' grades and test scores. These findings suggest that the immediate environments surrounding students are important to their academic performance. The findings of this study have implications for educators, policymakers, and parents as well as researchers who study academic achievement.
