Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the overall program reviewed in the report was the assessment of the impact of a new technology - that of signal processing by means of transferred-electron devices (TEDs) - on a particular class of systems of interest to the U.S. Navy. This volume contains the findings of the first task; it describes the state-of-the-art of transferred electron devices used for signal processing purposes, and it provides projections of short-range progress in the device and system technologies.

Book The Physics of Instabilities in Solid State Electron Devices

Download or read book The Physics of Instabilities in Solid State Electron Devices written by Harold L. Grubin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past three decades have been a period where useful current and voltage instabilities in solids have progressed from exciting research problems to a wide variety of commercially available devices. Materials and electronics research has led to devices such as the tunnel (Esaki) diode, transferred electron (Gunn) diode, avalanche diodes, real-space transfer devices, and the like. These structures have proven to be very important in the generation, amplification, switching, and processing of microwave signals up to frequencies exceeding 100 GHz. In this treatise we focus on a detailed theoretical understanding of devices of the kind that can be made unstable against circuit oscillations, large amplitude switching events, and in some cases, internal rearrangement of the electric field or current density distribution. The book is aimed at the semiconductor device physicist, engineer, and graduate student. A knowledge of solid state physics on an elementary or introductory level is assumed. Furthermore, we have geared the book to device engineers and physicists desirous of obtaining an understanding substantially deeper than that associated with a small signal equivalent circuit approach. We focus on both analytical and numerical treatment of specific device problems, concerning ourselves with the mechanism that determines the constitutive relation governing the device, the boundary conditions (contact effects), and the effect of the local circuit environment.

Book Harmonic Evaluation of Transferred Electron Devices

Download or read book Harmonic Evaluation of Transferred Electron Devices written by D. W. Griffin and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research on the harmonic evaluation of TED's falls into three main areas; design aspects of mounting structures, computer simulation of the interaction between TED and mounting structure and the effect of heat generation on performance. A novel two-port oscillator mount for simultaneous but independent tuning, loading and monitoring of the fundamental oscillation and its second harmonic was designed. The assembly provides a means for experimentally studying efficiency enhancement by harmonic tuning and conditions for optimizing the ratio of wanted to unwanted components in the oscillator output. Computer simulation of the interaction between TED and mounting structure was developed and used for operation involving fundamental and harmonic components of both voltage and current. Device-circuit interaction that gives rise to harmonic and other unwanted components of output are further compounded when the bias on the device is pulsed. The effect of the resulting time-varying temperature profile in the active layer of the device was investigated both experimentally and theoretically.

Book Single electron Devices and Circuits in Silicon

Download or read book Single electron Devices and Circuits in Silicon written by Zahid Ali Khan Durrani and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews research on single-electron devices and circuits in silicon. These devices provide a means to control electronic charge at the one-electron level and are promising systems for the development of few-electron, nanoscale electronic circuits. The book considers the design, fabrication, and characterization of single-electron transistors, single-electron memories, few-electron transfer devices such as electron pumps and turnstiles, and single-electron logic devices. A review of the many different approaches used for the experimental realisation of these devices is provided and devices developed during the author''s own research are used as detailed examples. An introduction to the physics of single-electron charging effects is included. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (301 KB). Contents: Introduction; Single-Electron Charging Effects; Single-Electron Transistors in Silicon; Single-Electron Memory; Few-Electron Transfer Devices; Single-Electron Logic Circuits. Readership: Researchers, academics, and postgraduate students in nanoelectronics, nanofabrication, nanomaterials and nanostructures, quantum physics and electrical & electronic engineering.

Book THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES OF THE TUNING AND MODULATION PROPERTIES OF TRANSFERRED ELECTRON DEVICES

Download or read book THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES OF THE TUNING AND MODULATION PROPERTIES OF TRANSFERRED ELECTRON DEVICES written by DENNY DUAN-LEE TANG and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study is to investigate the tuning and modulation properties of transferred-electron devices. The device performance under two basic tuning methods was examined: tuning through the bias voltage of the device and tuning through a resonant circuit. The tuning properties were derived from the interaction between the device and the circuit. Thus, both the device and the circuit admittances are needed for the investigation. Two conventional cavity circuits which were employed in these investigations, namely, the post-mount waveguide cavity and the slug-tuned coaxial-line cavity, had already been modeled and well understood. This study, therefore, concentrated on the nonlinear properties of the transferred-electron device. (Author).
