You might say, When we read history or philosophy or science, then we do read very thoroughly, studying all the meanings and bearings of the text, slowly, and thinking about it. This is hard study. But when we read a story or a poem out of class-hour, we read for amusement. Amusement and study are two differ ent things. I am not sure that you all think this; but young men generally do so think. As a matter of fact, every book worth reading ought to be read in precisely the same way that a scientific book is read not simply for amusement; and every book worth reading should have the same amount of value in it that a scientific book has, though the value may be of a totally different kind. For, after all, the good book of fiction or romance or poetry is a scientific work; it has been composed according to the best principles of more than one science, but especially according to the principles of the great science of life, the knowledge of human nature. In regard to foreign books, this is especially true; but the advice suggested will be harder to follow when we read in a language which is not our own. Nevertheless, how many Englishmen do you suppose really read a good book in Eng lish? How many Frenchmen read a great book in their own tongue? Probably not more than one in two thousand of those who think that they read. What is more, although there are now published every year in London upwards of six thousand books, at no time has there been so little good reading done by the average public as to-day. Books are written, sold, and read after a fashion or rather accord ing to the fashion. There is a fashion in literature as well as in everything else; and a particular kind of amusement be ing desired by the public, a particular kind of reading is given to supply the demand. So useless have become to this public the arts and graces of real literature, the great thoughts which should belong to a great book, that men of letters have almost ceased to produce true literature. When a man can obtain a great deal of money by writing a book without style or beauty, a mere narrative to amuse, and knows at the same time that if he should give three. Have bred a new and more utilitarian theory of the academic function; so that the study of ancient life and thought has been deposed from its old supremacy and has been made to take its place beside those subjects of invas tigation that derive their interest mainly from the appeal which they can make to tastes and motives that are essentially commercial and mechanical. This revolution in palagogic theory, with the resulting revolution in the ordering of our university curricula, while it sprang from a false impression of what liberal study really means, and while it is fraught with especial evil to a community such as ours, already far too eager in the pursuit of all material ends, has nevertheless, by way of compensation, not been without a stimulating effect upon the methods and the aims of classical study. It has, to be sure, impaired the value of the university degree that once was everywhere accepted as being the hallmark of the cultivated gentleman. It has broken down forever the intellectual sympathy that once existed as a powerful bond between all univer sity men - a sympathy based upon absolute identity of training, and one which made them a potent influence in the diffusion of sanity and serenity of thought. It has lowered the whole tone of university life and imported into the academic shades the standards of value, the aims, and the ambitions of the workshop and the counting-room. Yet, nevertheless, the very changes that have nar rowed the sphere of classical study and restricted its power for good by teloas ing from its refining influence the very persons who are most in need of it, have still, within its sphere, compelled it to develop a new and vigorous life, by en abling it to gain in perfection and completeness what it has lost in universality. Poetry, it will be generally conceded, even by the most enterprising claimant for plain speak ing in common speech, must work in one or other, or in all combined, of three different media - ideas, emotions, and moods. When poetry was defined as a criticism Of life, the framer Of the definition had in mind chiefly the poetry Of ideas; when it is described as 'emo tion remembered In tranquillity, t the description is directed chiefly to emotional poetry; and when we are told, as we often are nowadays, that the sincere reproduction of a moment's Spiritual experience is the proper concern Of the poetic art, this third and final definition applies alrnost exclusively to the poetry which seeks to reproduce the writer's passing mood without considering its permanent truth or value. The highest order of poetry will be found, under analysis, to com bine elements from each Of these three classes for the emotion, without which poetry is barren, contains in itself an indirect reference to the mood in which it is evoked, while the poet pro ceeds from the registration of the emotion to test it by the standard Of the universal idea. But it must never be forgotten that the idea is the germ Of the poem; that the truth and univer sality Of the idea is the test of the poem's quality.
