One must single out certain illustrations and study them so carefully that their delicate shades of beauty and forceful devices for conveying mean ing shall not escape one. One should also compare these illustrations with masterpieces of the same type in other literatures in order to realize the peculiar power of a racial genius. Book On Reading in Relation to Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book On Reading in Relation to Literature Classic Reprint written by Lafcadio Hearn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Reading in Relation to Literature No doubt you will think that this statement of the case confuses reading with study. You might say, When we read history or philosophy or science, then we do read very thoroughly, studying all the meanings and bearings of the text, slowly, and thinking about it. This is hard study. But when we read a story or a poem out of class-hour, we read for amusement. Amusement and study are two differ ent things. I am not sure that you all think this; but young men generally do so think. As a matter of fact, every book worth reading ought to be read in precisely the same way that a scientific book is read not simply for amusement; and every book worth reading should have the same amount of value in it that a scientific book has, though the value may be of a totally different kind. For, after all, the good book of fiction or romance or poetry is a scientific work; it has been composed according to the best principles of more than one science, but especially according to the principles of the great science of life, the knowledge of human nature. In regard to foreign books, this is especially true; but the advice suggested will be harder to follow when we read in a language which is not our own. Nevertheless, how many Englishmen do you suppose really read a good book in Eng lish? How many Frenchmen read a great book in their own tongue? Probably not more than one in two thousand of those who think that they read. What is more, although there are now published every year in London upwards of six thousand books, at no time has there been so little good reading done by the average public as to-day. Books are written, sold, and read after a fashion or rather accord ing to the fashion. There is a fashion in literature as well as in everything else; and a particular kind of amusement be ing desired by the public, a particular kind of reading is given to supply the demand. So useless have become to this public the arts and graces of real literature, the great thoughts which should belong to a great book, that men of letters have almost ceased to produce true literature. When a man can obtain a great deal of money by writing a book without style or beauty, a mere narrative to amuse, and knows at the same time that if he should give three. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature for Secondary Schools By an arrangement of type the book is adapted for various courses of study. It will probably be enough for beginners to keep to the larger type, and it may even be advisable for the teacher to restrict their studies to a selection of the more important authors. In a book of this kind, involving the record of thou sands of facts, it is impossible that perfect accuracy can at once, if at last, be attained. It is as accurate, s0'far as it goes, as I have been able by a considerable amount of reading and study to make it. I shall be thankful to receive notes of correction, and any suggestions that I may be favored with will be carefully considered. In its preparation I have necessarily been indebted to many writers. Where my obligations are so manifold and various, it would be invidious to particularize them; but I cannot avoid expressing my indebtedness, direct or indirect, to the professorial teaching and published work of Professor Masson, of Edinburgh. Whatever of merit the book contains is largely due to him; the faults are my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Study of Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Study of Poetry Classic Reprint written by Bliss Perry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Study of Poetry The method of studying poetry which I have followed in this book was sketched some years ago in my chapter on "Poetry" in Counsel Upon the Reading of Books. My confidence that the genetic method is the natural way of approaching the subject has been shared by many lovers of poetry. I hope, however, that I have not allowed my insistence upon the threefold process of "impression, transforming imagination, and expression" to harden into a set formula. Formulas have a certain dangerous usefulness for critics and teachers, but they are a very small part of one's training in the appreciation of poetry. I have allotted little or no space to the specific discussion of epic and drama, as these types are adequately treated in many books. Our own generation is peculiarly attracted by various forms of the lyric, and in Part Two I have devoted especial attention to that field. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literary Study of the Bible: An Account of the Leading Forms of Literature Represented in the Sacred Writings; Intended for English Readers Now for all these types of readers the literary study of the Bible is a common meeting-ground. One who recognises that God has been pleased to put his revelation of himself in the form of literature, must surely go on to see that literary form is a thing worthy of study. The agnostic will not deny that, if every particle of authority and supernatural character be taken from the Bible. Book Harper s Dictionary of Classical Literature and Antiquities Classic Reprint

Download or read book Harper s Dictionary of Classical Literature and Antiquities Classic Reprint written by Harry Thurston Peck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harper's Dictionary of Classical Literature and Antiquities Until very recently, the study of classical literature was, in all our univer sities. Inseparably linked with the conception of a liberal education. Holding firmly to the dignified traditions of the past, it was accepted as an undisputed fact that the highest type of scholarship, the type best fitted to sustain the supreme test of aesthetic perfection and to be stamped with the final vac/wt that confers distinction, was unattainable if severed from the direct influence and inspiration of the great Hellenic masters whose intellectual activity was imbued with a noble passion for ideal beauty and ideal truth. Of late, the tremendous pressure of material interests from without, and the national eagerness for immediate and tangible results. Have bred a new and more utilitarian theory of the academic function; so that the study of ancient life and thought has been deposed from its old supremacy and has been made to take its place beside those subjects of invas tigation that derive their interest mainly from the appeal which they can make to tastes and motives that are essentially commercial and mechanical. This revolution in palagogic theory, with the resulting revolution in the ordering of our university curricula, while it sprang from a false impression of what liberal study really means, and while it is fraught with especial evil to a community such as ours, already far too eager in the pursuit of all material ends, has nevertheless, by way of compensation, not been without a stimulating effect upon the methods and the aims of classical study. It has, to be sure, impaired the value of the university degree that once was everywhere accepted as being the hallmark of the cultivated gentleman. It has broken down forever the intellectual sympathy that once existed as a powerful bond between all univer sity men - a sympathy based upon absolute identity of training, and one which made them a potent influence in the diffusion of sanity and serenity of thought. It has lowered the whole tone of university life and imported into the academic shades the standards of value, the aims, and the ambitions of the workshop and the counting-room. Yet, nevertheless, the very changes that have nar rowed the sphere of classical study and restricted its power for good by teloas ing from its refining influence the very persons who are most in need of it, have still, within its sphere, compelled it to develop a new and vigorous life, by en abling it to gain in perfection and completeness what it has lost in universality. Book Tradition and Change

Download or read book Tradition and Change written by Arthur Waugh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tradition and Change: Studies in Contemporary Literature Poetry is already in a twelfth impression, and many of the names that decorate it are among the most enthusiastically acclaimed of the younger generation. But, before we consider their performance in detail, a few reflections upon the art which they practise may help us to appreciate the precise standard of poetry to which their workmanship and Spiritual outlook conform. Poetry, it will be generally conceded, even by the most enterprising claimant for plain speak ing in common speech, must work in one or other, or in all combined, of three different media - ideas, emotions, and moods. When poetry was defined as a criticism Of life, the framer Of the definition had in mind chiefly the poetry Of ideas; when it is described as 'emo tion remembered In tranquillity, t the description is directed chiefly to emotional poetry; and when we are told, as we often are nowadays, that the sincere reproduction of a moment's Spiritual experience is the proper concern Of the poetic art, this third and final definition applies alrnost exclusively to the poetry which seeks to reproduce the writer's passing mood without considering its permanent truth or value. The highest order of poetry will be found, under analysis, to com bine elements from each Of these three classes for the emotion, without which poetry is barren, contains in itself an indirect reference to the mood in which it is evoked, while the poet pro ceeds from the registration of the emotion to test it by the standard Of the universal idea. But it must never be forgotten that the idea is the germ Of the poem; that the truth and univer sality Of the idea is the test of the poem's quality. Book From Shakespeare to O Henry

Download or read book From Shakespeare to O Henry written by Stuart Petre Brodie Mais and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Shakespeare to O. Henry: Studies in Literature Again, when a dramatist returns time after time to the same peculiarities in his major creations, it is obvious that he is at any rate interested in those peculiarities, either because they are his own obsessions or are possessed by his most intimate friends. NO man can depict what he fails to understand, nor does he usually attempt to draw what never interests him; Shakespeare, for instance, nowhere gives us a living portrait of the zealous Puritan fanatic reformer, or the shopkeeping, middle-class citizen: neither type interested him. Two types alone stand out among his delineations of men as Doctor Johnson shrewdly remarks, Shake speare has no heroes; his best pictures of men are those which depict them as creatures of obvious human failings like unto ourselves, and they stand out, very clear-cut, in two main groups. Book Southern Literary Readings Classic Reprint

Download or read book Southern Literary Readings Classic Reprint written by Leonidas Warren Payne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Literary Readings The critical apparatus at the back of the book Should be used judiciously, the teacher determining just what is best in individual cases. The use of this material should by no means be allowed to render the teaching of litera ture mechanical. That the literature itself is the main object should constantly be borne in mind. To read with clearness, accuracy, and expression the poems and stories and essays, and enjoy their intellectual, emotional, and esthetic qualities, is the highest desideratum. To over emphasize the letter is to deaden the spirit; but on the other hand, to neglect the letter is frequently to leave closed all avenues of approach to anything like an appreci ation of the production. The only effectual way of getting at the spirit of a literary production, particularly in the earlier stages of education, is through knowledge gained by attention to the letter. It is absolutely necessary, then, to study words, allusions, thought units and the general technical elements of literary construction. The child must be given as a basis of knowledge the details of literary values before he can properly perceive or estimate the spirit of literary art as a whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types of the Short Story: Selected Stories With Reading Lists The prominence of the short story as a literary form has led to the preparation of several textbooks on the subject. Some of these are treatises on the technique of the short story, others give specimens selected to show the historical development of the type. But a course in the writing of short stories belongs in college work, and the study of the evolution of literary forms has its proper place in the university. The present volume is prepared for the high school student. It does not aim to trace 'the develop ment of the short story, but accepting it as a literary type, considers the chief forms in which it is found today. To this end thirteen stories, each illustrating a well-defined type, are presented. Each selection is followed by brief comment and a list of other stories of the same type, the purpose being to lead the student to a wider and more intelligent reading in this enjoyable field of literature.
