Book Splendors of the Sky Classic Reprint

Download or read book Splendors of the Sky Classic Reprint written by Isabel Martin Lewis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Splendors of the Sky The following book has been compiled from a series of articles written by the author during the past three years for The New York Evening Sun upon astronomical subjects of general, popular interests. Requests from a number of readers for copies of these articles have led to the publication of a selection and arrangement of them, including some revisions and changes, which form a connected and comprehensive treatment of the astronomy of the present day. Diagrams, formulae and mathematical proofs have been entirely omitted as unsuitable to a popular treatment of the subject. It is not the desire of the author to attempt to enter into a detailed scientific exposition of astronomical truths but simply to tell in non-technical terms something about the wonderful progress the astronomers are now making in delving into the mysteries of time and space and in solving problems concerning the heavenly bodies that a few years ago appeared to be beyond solution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earth and Sky: A Primer of Astronomy for Young Readers Looking more carefully at the difference between the two directions of the new education we can see what each accomplishes. There is first an effort to train the original powers of the individual and make him self-active, quick at observation, and free in his thinking. Next, the new education endeavors, by the reading of books and the study of the wisdom of the race, to make the child or youth a participator in the results of experience of all mankind. These two movements may be made antagonistic by poor The book knowledge, containing as it does the precious lesson of human experience, may be so taught as to bring with it only dead rules of conduct, only dead scraps of information, and no stimulant to original thinking. Its contents may be memorized without being understood. On the other hand, the self-activity of the child may be stimulated at the expense of his social well-being - his originality may be cultivated at the expense of his rationality. If he is taught persistently to have his own way, to trust only his own senses. To cling to his own opinions heedless of the experience of his fellows, he is pre paring for an unsuccessful, misanthropic career, and is likely enough to end his life in a madhouse. It is admitted that a too exclusive study of the knowledge found in books, the knowledge which is aggregated from the experience and thought of other people, may result in loading the mind of the pupil with material which he can not use to advantage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Sky: A Resume of Personal Experience and Observation This little volume grew out of experiences in flying which have greatly augmented the author's interest in the aerial world. The beauties, wonders, awesome spectacles, inspiring panoramas, and extensive ranges of vision which await the aerial traveler, make of cloudland a veritable fairyland if he will open his consciousness to them. Aircraft have brought this new world of experiences within easy reach of mankind and it is one of the aims of this volume to awaken those who fly, or would fly, to the variety of interest which air-travel affords. Furthermore, the sky holds much of interest for the earthly observer who will overcome his indifference to this aspect of Nature. Cloudland is full of variety. It is a wonderland of clouds, weather, winds, sunsets, dawns, twilights, and other interesting phenomena. It will brighten many dull moments and may be depended upon at all times to arouse the imagination and to supply something for the lover of beauty. Those who would he interested technically will find an abundance of interest in the phenomena of the atmospheric ocean above. Therefore, broadly, the aim of this volume is to aid the general reader in becoming more interested in cloudland. In aiming to present the discussions in a readable manner, tedious technical data have been reduced to a minimum. Such material has been grouped largely in a few chapters although technical facts have been interspersed throughout the chapters with the hope that they would be more palatable to the general reader in this manner of presentation. Book The Story of Earth and Sky Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Earth and Sky Classic Reprint written by Carleton Washburne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Earth and Sky Studies of children's spontaneous questions show that beginning at about the age of nine and lasting at least until early adolescence, there is a keen interest in the origin of things, in the whys Of natural phenomena, and in the stars. Schools nowadays adjust their curricula to such interests, and try to give children that mental food and those activities which are suitable to their stage Of development. Hence the story of the earth - its probable origin, its evolution, and its place in the solar system - and the story of the imagination-stretching starry universe are becoming important parts Of the course Of study in elementary schools and junior high schools. This book was begun nearly twenty years ago in the science department of the San Francisco State Teachers College, where it was worked out with the children in the training school. Some of the geological stories were published, in 1916 in a little book called The Story of the Earth. Some of the star stories were published in a syndicated newspaper series, and were mimeographed for school use. Later, for over a decade, these early materials were used, with continuous revisions and additions, in the Winnetka public schools. Here the authors and their associates were able to watch the reactions Of the children, and note where their interests were abused, or where they lagged, which points were clear and which needed clarification. From these observations grew the preparation Of the present book, The Story of Earth and Sky. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Curiosities of the Sky

    Book Details:
  • Author : Garrett Putman Serviss
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 1909
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Curiosities of the Sky written by Garrett Putman Serviss and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1909 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Froude says of history is true also of astronomy: it is the most impressive where it transcends explanation. It is not the mathematics of astronomy, but the wonder and the mystery that seize upon the imagination. The calculation of an eclipse owes all its prestige to the sublimity of its data; the operation, in itself, requires no more mental effort than the preparation of a railway time-table. The dominion which astronomy has always held over the minds of men is akin to that of poetry; when the former becomes merely instructive and the latter purely didactic, both lose their power over the imagination. Astronomy is known as the oldest of the sciences, and it will be the longest-lived because it will always have arcana that have not been penetrated.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mathematics of the Sky, or the Stupendous Grasp of Figures as Applied to the Heavenly Bodies Reveling in the depths of space, reflecting on the grandeur of the uni verse and calculating on the vastness of its dimensions have brought many delightful hours while preparing the material for this book. It is not a dry and prosy collection of numbers brought together for the sake of looking at them, but the study of the heavens which is back of the book fires the imagination and stirs the soul to grander conceptions of the magnificence of the universe, and to nobler aspirations and reverence for the God who made it. May every hour Spent in reading this book fill the mind of the reader with more reverent thoughts concerning Him who created all things. In locating various stars, clusters and nebulas I have generally spelled out the words degrees and minutes, because the signs for degrees and minutes of an arc are not ordinarily supplied by the linotype. Download or read book An Introduction to Astronomy Classic Reprint written by Forest Ray Moulton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Astronomy As now arranged, the first chapters are devoted to a discus sion of the earth and its motions. They present splendid examples of the characteristics and methods of science, and amply illustrate the care with which scientific theories are established. The conclusions which are set forth are bound up with the development of science from the dawn of recorded history to the recent experiments on the rigidity and the elas ticity of the earth. They show how closely various sciences are interlocked, and how much an understanding of the earth depends upon its relations to the sky. They lead naturally to a more formal treatment of the celestial sphere and a study of the constellations. A familiarity with the brighter stars and the more conspicuous constellations is regarded as important. One who has become thoroughly acquainted with them will always experience a thrill when he looks up at night into a cloudless sky.
