Through studies from several European countries, the book showcases how legal regulations and social policies influence parental and child well-being after divorce and separation. It also illustrates how social policies are interwoven with the normative fabric of a country. For example, it is shown that father-child contact after separation is more intense in those countries which have adopted policies that encourage shared parenting. Correspondingly, countries that have adopted these regulations are at the forefront of more egalitarian gender role attitudes. Apart from a strong emphasis on the legal and social policy context, the studies in this volume adopt a longitudinal perspective and situate post-separation behaviour and well-being in the life course. The longitudinal perspective opens up new avenues for research to understand how behaviour and conditions prior or at divorce and separation affect later behaviour and well-being. Book excerpt: The parental bond and its emotional and behavioral effects on children have been widely studied and researched for years. However, the association between a parent’s behavior and a child’s perception of parental rejection, which can lead to an increased risk for psychological maladjustment, is an area of controversy that has received far less attention. While experts agree that the parental bond is necessary for a child’s psychological adjustment, they disagree on the varying effects it can have on an adolescent. In this review, we examine clinical presentations of adolescents’ behavioral and emotional functioning in relation to perceived parental rejection. This literature review aimed to present a comprehensive view of how adolescents are affected by parents’ socioeconomic status (SES), and how parental absence affects a child’s psychological functioning. Proquest psychology journals, EBSCOHOST, PsychINFO, PsychARTICLES and PsychBOOKS were used to search studies that contained key words: socioeconomic status AND behavioral problems; OR socioeconomic status AND emotional problems OR socioeconomic status AND psychological maladjustments; parents working multiple jobs AND socioeconomic status OR parental supervision AND socioeconomic status; adolescence AND parental neglect OR adolescence and parental absence OR adolescence AND perceived parental neglect; neglect AND emotional problems OR neglect AND behavioral problems; effects of socioeconomic status on adolescence; comparisons of low socioeconomic status AND high socioeconomic status; and problems among low socioeconomic status families AND effects on adolescence. Nine studies examined how adolescents’ perceived rejection was affected by their parents’ socioeconomic status and how working nonstandard hours influenced psychological maladjustments. The findings showed that child perceived rejection was increased in lower socioeconomic status compared to higher socioeconomic status mothers. There was also a positive relationship between perceived rejection, depression and aggression. Additionally, mothers who worked nonstandard hours had an increase in negative mother-child interactions and children’s emotional and behavioral problems were also augmented. In conclusion, perceived parental rejection can have negative outcomes on children whose parents work nonstandard hours. Helping children who perceive parental neglect is important in order to help decrease emotional and behavioral problems. It is important to help educate mothers and adolescents on possible interventions and resources in order to help strengthen communication and reduce perceived parental rejection.
