Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled A Study of the Impact of Foreign Language Anxiety on Tertiary Students' Oral Performance submitted by Lowana Phillips for the degree of Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) at the University of Hong Kong August, 2005 Speaking in a foreign language class, especially in front of others, can be a significant anxiety inducing task for the language learner. Therefore it is important to consider how anxiety affects the foreign language learner. Although there is a large body of research on anxiety and speaking, the specific area of public speaking for Chinese learners of English is relatively untouched. This study investigates the impact that anxiety may have on the assessment of public speaking proficiency and on how students feel about their oral performance. The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS; Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope, 1986) was used to select four high anxiety and four low anxiety, tertiary-level students from four English language classes at the University of Hong Kong (N=62). The eight students gave stimulated recall and interview comments after watching their videoed presentations. Twelve FLCAS statements were selected as relevant to giving a presentation, and student responses to the selected statements were used as the basis for interview questions. Three different teachers graded each presentation. There were no significant correlations between grade and anxiety level. The highest and lowest grades were given to two high anxiety students with very similar levels of anxiety. However, there were significant differences between high and low anxiety students' perceptions of performance. Overall, the low anxiety students showed a more positive attitude towards giving a presentation in terms of foreign language learning attitude, speaking, and evaluation. The findings suggest that the relationship between foreign language anxiety and oral performance is not always clear cut, and that increased anxiety does not necessarily mean decreased oral proficiency. Despite this it may be necessary for foreign language teachers to be more aware of helping students make use of and reduce their anxieties, and help students improve their attitude towards language learning. Book Foreign Language Anxiety and the Advanced Language Learner

Download or read book Foreign Language Anxiety and the Advanced Language Learner written by Zsuzsa Tóth and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does anxiety about learning and using a foreign language decline as learners become more competent in the target language, or is anxiety also relevant at higher levels of proficiency? This is the question Foreign Language Anxiety and the Advanced Language Learner sets out to explore. The aim of the book is to give readers an insight into what role anxiety plays in the language learning and communication processes of advanced language learners. Specifically, the study examines how advanced EFL learners’ foreign language anxiety (FLA) can be characterized; how anxiety relates to other individual differences (cognitive, affective, personality); and explores the relationship between FLA and various aspects of learners’ performance and communication experience in the target language. The research context is Hungary. The findings, however, are not confined to the Hungarian EFL setting. In addition to making a contribution to the clarification of some unresolved issues in language anxiety research—including the role of proficiency in the development of anxiety, the relationship between anxiety and other learner variables, and the much-debated question of whether or not anxiety accounts for differential success in L2 learning—this study has important implications for language teachers as well.

Book Pronunciation Learning Strategies and Language Anxiety

Download or read book Pronunciation Learning Strategies and Language Anxiety written by Magdalena Szyszka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-29 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents theoretical considerations and the results of empirical research on pronunciation learning strategies (PLS) deployed by pre-service trainee teachers majoring in English as a foreign language who experienced different levels of language anxiety (LA). The theoretical part focuses on the concepts of pronunciation learning, pronunciation-learning strategies and language anxiety and includes an overview of recent empirical research dealing with various related issues. The empirical section of the book presents the findings of a research project that investigated the interplay between PLS and LA, in which both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. Based on the findings, the author proposes two profiles of anxious and non-anxious EFL trainee teachers who support their pronunciation learning with an array of pronunciation learning strategies and tactics.

Book Foreign Language Learning Anxiety in China

Download or read book Foreign Language Learning Anxiety in China written by Deyuan He and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Already the focus of much interest for 50 years, the study of foreign language learning anxiety (FLLA) still remains a popular research topic among scholars in Western countries. FLLA is believed to be an important cause of students’ “dumb English”. Considering the paucity of monographs on FLLA in China, this book represents an important step towards filling this gap. The author uses his PhD dissertation as a foundation for reviewing and discussing previous literature, as well as the current status of and major issues concerning FLLA worldwide. The book explores FLLA in China by using innovative triangulated research methodology, combining both quantitative and qualitative methods, namely surveys, focused interviews, and classroom observations. It also highlights the significance and implications of the research results and predicts the future of global FLLA research with a particular focus on China. Readers will discover the latest developments and issues concerning FLLA, causes of FLLA, and verified, effective strategies for alleviating such anxiety.

This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case Study from the year 2016 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, , language: English, abstract: This paper presents an empirical study of Foreign Language Anxiety in Chinese university students learning English as a foreign language. The subjects of the present study were 344 college students from Mainland China. They responded to a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire adapted from Horwitz’s Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). Their responses to the questionnaire were submitted to exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (with the help of statistical package of SPSS and AMOS) for identifying anxiety dimensions. The results show that four dimensions of anxiety exist among the subjects and the two dimensions of the FLCAS were closely examined to find the extent to which that the four-factor model adequately fit the data. The fit indices suggested that the instrument measuring the dimensions of anxiety specific to college students in China was valid construct-wise and reliable for future use.

This book was released on 2021 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Language Learners (ELLs) who can write and read competently can fully participate in American schools, work environments and the society. However, ELLs face challenges while learning the English language. Anxiety is characterized as one of the issues impacting the learners’ accomplishment, which involves stages of communicative anxiety, fear of adverse assessment, test anxiety, and anxiety of English classroom. Moreover, anxiety is identified as being prevalent in the field of education and psychology as one factor that has negative influences in language acquisition (Hashemi, 2011). Studies have shown that there is a relationship between anxiety level and academic performance of ELLs. Factors such as language use, socioeconomic status, and parental education and their association with students’ performance on standardized tests are discussed. Theories and models that will allow students to build on previous encounters while acquiring new knowledge and applying skills to learn a second language are also discussed. This research is necessary to determine whether student’s anxiety level impacts performance in academics and learning English. The findings from this research could help teachers to decrease anxiety associated with learning a second language. Other researchers could use these findings to direct future investigations on challenges faced by ELLs. Overall, this research contributes to a better understanding of anxiety for counselors and other practitioners.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the asynchronous voice-conferencing technology, Voice Thread ®, on the anxiety and oral proficiency of high school students in their third year of studying Spanish as a foreign language. In this quasi-experimental study students' foreign language anxiety levels and oral proficiency were examined to determine if a difference existed based on the type of practice used. The treatment group used Voice Thread ® to practice speaking. The control group used the traditional method of the language laboratory to practice speaking. The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) was used to measure anxiety levels and the Performance Assessment for Language Students (PALS) level three speaking analytical grading rubric was used to measure oral proficiency. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the foreign language anxiety data. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to analyze the oral proficiency data. Results for the FLCAS yielded no significant difference between the control and treatment groups. Results of the MANOVA yielded a significant main effect difference between the control and experimental groups. Posthoc pairwise comparisons revealed statistically significant differences for the subscales of task completion, comprehensibility, level of discourse and fluency. No statistically significant differences were found for the subscales of vocabulary and language control. Descriptors: foreign language, anxiety, oral proficiency, voice-conferencing

Book An Analysis of Thinking and Research About Qualitative Methods

Download or read book An Analysis of Thinking and Research About Qualitative Methods written by W. James Potter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for social science scholars who want to learn more about the qualitative way of thinking, this book addresses the full continuum of issues about the qualitative methodologies. At one end of that continuum are the deeply philosophical concerns of ontology and epistemology. At the other -- concrete -- end of that continuum are the practical issues of what is considered evidence: How does one go about gathering evidence? Where, when, and how does one analyze evidence? What are the alternative ways of dealing with tone and voice in writing qualitative research? The attention to practical, concrete issues makes this book useful as a handbook providing a great deal of vital information to scholars who want a guide to making decisions as they navigate their research questions through the qualitative realm. Uniquely qualified to write such a book, Potter has earned PhDs in both qualitative methods (with a concentration in linguistics and field studies) and in quantitative methods (with a concentration in social science theory and statistics). The book is not an ideological argument that glorifies one system of thinking while attempting to persuade the reader that other systems of thinking are bankrupt. Rather, the book presents a respectful, balanced analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the qualitative approach. The book builds to a controversial final chapter entitled "Is Convergence a Possibility?" in which Potter synthesizes a conclusion from his analysis of a wide range of qualitative studies across three broad topic areas -- text focused research, audience focused research, and institution focused research -- and across seven major qualitative methodologies -- ethnography, ethnomethodology, reception study, ecological psychology, symbolic interactionism, cultural studies, and textual analysis. His conclusion is that not only is there a possibility of a convergence between qualitative and quantitative approaches, but that the convergence has already happened. The book includes an appendix in which 95 books and articles using the qualitative approach are abstracted and analyzed to illustrate key points of methodology and methods. It also includes subject and author indexes.

Book Overcoming Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety

Download or read book Overcoming Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety written by Jinyan Huang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign language anxiety and language-skill-specific anxiety are widely used to describe the feeling of tension and apprehension, which is specifically associated with foreign language learning contexts, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) is related to foreign language anxiety and language-skill-specific anxiety, and fairly recently identified as distinguished from other forms of anxiety. FLCA is a more general type of anxiety in learning a foreign language with a strong speaking anxiety element; and low self-confidence is identified as an important component of its construct. Research shows that FLCA is a complex, multi-dimensional phenomenon; it has many potential sources; and it interferes with the acquisition, retention, and production of a foreign language. This book examines the dynamics of FLCA phenomena.
