Patients from emergency department (ED) usually have high expectation on receiving timely and high quality medical service. They generally have low patient satisfaction. Patient satisfaction has been identified to be associated with willingness to return and recommendation of the medical service to others. Therefore, to identify the factors associated with patient satisfaction in ED is important. Factors associated with patient satisfaction could vary by different ED systems. This project aimed at synthesizing factors associated with patient satisfaction in ED in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and comparing the different factors associated with patient satisfaction among the three areas and make recommendations on interventions to improve patient satisfaction in ED. Methods This review retrieved published literatures from PubMed, CNKI, and Taiwan electronic periodical services (TEPS). There is no restriction on study design, study population and measurements of patient satisfaction. Studies reporting factors associated with patient satisfaction in ED, and studies reporting effective interventions of improving patient satisfaction in ED were included. A total of 20 including 12 studies about Mainland China, two studies about Hong Kong and six studies about Taiwan were included. Results Common factors associated with patient satisfaction in emergency services have been identified in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan as well as other countries. These common factors included patients' characteristics, technical skills of medical staff, service attitudes, communication skills, professional ethics, provision of sufficient information, waiting time, allocation of resources and physical environment of ED. Different health systems can explain some unique factors identified in different areas. Satisfaction with medical expenses has been identified as a factor associated with overall patient satisfaction of ED in Mainland China, which could be due to that patients in Mainland have higher out-of-pocket share. Hong Kong has a gate keeper system which results in a large number of inappropriate ED users and thereby increases the waiting time and causes the ED crowding. Conclusion On the basis of the identified factors, potential interventions such as providing patients with sufficient information and improving medical staff's technical skills, service attitude and communication skills can be implemented to increase patient satisfaction. Future studies should focus more on the evaluation of specific interventions. Book excerpt: This dissertation, "Job Satisfaction and Stress of Nurses and Their Association With Turnover Intention Rate in an Acute Hong Kong Public Hospital, Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital" by Leung-chun, Lam, 林良春, was obtained from The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong) and is being sold pursuant to Creative Commons: Attribution 3.0 Hong Kong License. To identify the factors of job satisfaction and stress of nurses and their association with turnover intention rate in an acute hospital in Hong Kong. Background. Heavy workload, shortage of manpower and high turnover rate of nurse are the major problems in Hong Kong particularly in public hospitals even after measures have been taken to tackle them in recent years. Many studies in western countries showed that workload, turnover rate, stress, satisfaction level and turnover intention of nurse were associated. However there are few studies in Asian countries. This information is needed to provide policymakers evidence to formulate particular policy to deal with these problems. Design. This is a cross sectional study. Survey data were collected from nurses in the medical ward, operation theatre and intensive care unit of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Hong Kong. Methods. A snowball convenience sampling method was used to collect samples from the selected departments. My colleagues in the select departments referred participants to me. Packet of questionnaire was distributed to the participants and the questionnaire was self - administered .The survey questionnaires, including the Expanded Nursing Stress Scale (ENSS), Job Satisfaction Scale (JSS) and Anticipated Turnover Scale (ATS), were used to collect data from the sampled subjects. Results. Mean scores of ENSS, JSS and ATS of the respondents were 140.77 out of 228, 114.12 out of 216 and 49.48 out of 84 respectively. These indicated that respondents had high stress and high intention to leave level but mild satisfaction level. It also revealed that there was inverse relationship between stress and satisfaction level (r = -0.23, 95% CI: -0.46 to -0.02) and between satisfaction level and intention to leave level (-0.41, 95% CI: -0.62 to -0.19). Conclusion. There is some evidence of high stress level and intention to leave in nurses working in public hospital while their satisfaction level is in a moderate level. Stress level, satisfaction level and intention to leave level in nurses are associated. The management should adopt an evidence - based approach in improving the work environment for nurses. Even though the generalization of this study is weak, it is useful for the hospital to deal with the human resource problems of nurses. Book Perceptions of Change Among Emergency Department Staff in a University Teaching Hospital in the United Kingdom

Download or read book Perceptions of Change Among Emergency Department Staff in a University Teaching Hospital in the United Kingdom written by Savithiri Ratnapalan and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: University teaching hospitals provide acute and emergency care in most healthcare systems. One of the priority areas in hospitals are emergency departments (ED) where practice changes are the norm due to the unpredictable and open "public good access" nature of service demands. At present changes to EDs are implemented to improve efficiency and reduce costs in the United Kingdom (UK) and other developed countries. Also, at present, there is limited evidence on how or why change is successful in some instances and not in others. The objective of this research was to study staff perceptions of change and the factors influencing the implementation of changes at a university teaching hospital in the UK. A modified grounded theory methodology was used to perform a secondary analysis of 41 interview transcripts to answer the research questions. Interview transcripts from participants consisted of 20 physicians, 13 nurses, two support workers and six managers involved in paediatric emergency care at the hospital. Data analysis provided answers to the first research question of how changes happen in the emergency department by identifying triggers and barriers to both planned and emergent changes. The second research question of what factors impact change identified three themes; communication, education and leadership. The concept that permeated all identified themes was that change provokes emotional responses at individual, team, and organizational levels. Good communication leading to staff involvement, education about new processes and credible trusted leadership, encouraged positive emotions and reduced negative emotions. In this study, negative emotions stemmed from a perceived inability of healthcare professionals to function effectively and efficiently to ensure safe patient care with changes. Professional values dictated the actions or inactions that transpired either as a result of these emotions or despite these emotions in health professionals. The study findings illustrate an emerging concept of emotions in change and the importance of acknowledging the reasons for negative emotions and fostering positive emotions in individuals and groups through communication, education and good leadership. I hope this concept will ultimately advance the theoretical understanding and practical strategies to help the process of change management in healthcare organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in late 2002 and 2003 challenged the global public health community to confront a novel epidemic that spread rapidly from its origins in southern China until it had reached more than 25 other countries within a matter of months. In addition to the number of patients infected with the SARS virus, the disease had profound economic and political repercussions in many of the affected regions. Recent reports of isolated new SARS cases and a fear that the disease could reemerge and spread have put public health officials on high alert for any indications of possible new outbreaks. This report examines the response to SARS by public health systems in individual countries, the biology of the SARS coronavirus and related coronaviruses in animals, the economic and political fallout of the SARS epidemic, quarantine law and other public health measures that apply to combating infectious diseases, and the role of international organizations and scientific cooperation in halting the spread of SARS. The report provides an illuminating survey of findings from the epidemic, along with an assessment of what might be needed in order to contain any future outbreaks of SARS or other emerging infections.

Book Patient Satisfaction

Download or read book Patient Satisfaction written by Rhonda Hill and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patient satisfaction is an area of concern for United States emergency departments today. It is a mandated measure by many healthcare regulating agencies. Many factors in the emergency department (ED) can affect patient satisfaction. One of these factors is length of stay. The purpose of this study is to describe and examine the relationship between patient satisfaction and length of stay in the ED. Retrospective data were obtained from an area hospital, which included ED patient satisfaction scores for January through December 2007 (p. 16) and ED census and length of stay for patients during the same twelve-month period. A Pearson correlation was performed on the data obtained. Data analysis revealed no significant relationship between patient satisfaction and length of stay in the ED. Further research is needed in the area of patient satisfaction and length of stay in the ED.

Book Evaluation of Factors Influencing Job Satisfaction

Download or read book Evaluation of Factors Influencing Job Satisfaction written by Barbara Sypniewska and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "job satisfaction" is derived from the humanities, psychology and sociology. In the field of psychology, it is a state where an employee has an emotional perception of his situation and reacts with feelings of pleasure or pain. In sociology, it is considered a variable in different categories related to how each employee evaluates and thinks about his work. Job satisfaction is closely related to the performance and quality of work performed by an employee and, consequently, translates into the success of an organization, because a satisfied employee builds and participates in the success of any organization. This article presents the results of the research conducted by the author in 2012 on a sample of 215 people. Respondents represented different organizations. The aim of the study was to identify and assess the significance of individual factors influencing satisfaction and dissatisfaction with work and demonstrate their impact on the overall assessment of job satisfaction. The study showed that between the weight attributed to individual factors and overall job satisfaction there are many statistically significant correlations referring mainly to selected on the basis of analysis respondents' groups. The study confirms the raised thesis concerning the validity of research in the factors affecting the general feeling of satisfaction by the employees.
