Book excerpt: The engineering behavior of soils and aggregates is a function of their basic properties and the environment to which they are subjected. In pavement design the effect of repeated loading is in important environmental condition which has received little attention, especially for granular materials. This report present results showing the influence of repetitive triaxial stressing on the deformation of granular (flexible base course) materials. The materials examined were a) hard rounded material (gravel), b) hard angular material manufactured by crushing oversized pieces of the gravel, and c) a soft crushed limestone. Each material -- except the soft -- was tested at three separate gradations representing the coarse, medium and fine ranges allowed by Texas Highway Department specifications for such materials. The total strain characteristics of the materials were quantitatively related to the applied stresses and number of stress repetitions. It was shown that the behavior under repetitive stresses was not closely related to static shear strengths as determined by the Texas triaxial method. Rebound strains could only be expressed qualitatively. Under repetitive stressing the rounded material, which ranked lowest in static shear tests, was at least equivalent to the angular material for the stress range expected in roadways; both were superior to the soft material. It is believed that the relative densities of the respective materials influenced their behavior more than particle shape or hardness. Finally, recommendations were made for improving equipment and testing procedures which should simplify analysis of results and reduce experimental error in future investigations.

Download or read book Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Performance Based Design in Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering Beijing 2022 written by Lanmin Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-19 with total page 2417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 4th International Conference on Performance-based Design in Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering (PBD-IV) is held in Beijing, China. The PBD-IV Conference is organized under the auspices of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering - Technical Committee TC203 on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering and Associated Problems (ISSMGE-TC203). The PBD-I, PBD-II, and PBD-III events in Japan (2009), Italy (2012), and Canada (2017) respectively, were highly successful events for the international earthquake geotechnical engineering community. The PBD events have been excellent companions to the International Conference on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering (ICEGE) series that TC203 has held in Japan (1995), Portugal (1999), USA (2004), Greece (2007), Chile (2011), New Zealand (2015), and Italy (2019). The goal of PBD-IV is to provide an open forum for delegates to interact with their international colleagues and advance performance-based design research and practices for earthquake geotechnical engineering.

Book Study of the Dynamic Stress strain and Wave propagation Characteristics of Soils

Download or read book Study of the Dynamic Stress strain and Wave propagation Characteristics of Soils written by James V. Zaccor and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes current understanding of wave propagation in a cohesionless dry granular material in response to loadings suddenly applied and held at constant magnitude. Experimental studies of propagating waves were conducted in which measurements were made of stress and displacement, as a function of time and position along a column of granular material, so that the stress-strain relationship, and wave and particle velocities could be determined. The latter quantities, thus obtained from experimental measurements, have been compared with values obtained from applicable equations of state. A number of equations of state are considered. Two equations of state appropriate to rigid-pack conditions have been discussed. They apply to very different, but regular, packings of equi-radii elastic spheres where Hertz-type contact forces prevail and rearrangement of particles under loading is not allowed. These two equations of state were derived only from material properties of the individual particles and the packing arrangement. In addition, equations of state appropriate to conditions where particle relocations occur during loading have also been developed from the measured stress-strain relationship. From the equations of state, shock, sound, and particle velocities have been obtained as derived quantities and compared with those obtained from experiment. Excellent agreement has been found between experiment and theory. (Author).

Book Study of the Dynamic Stress strain and Wave propagation Characteristics of Soils

Download or read book Study of the Dynamic Stress strain and Wave propagation Characteristics of Soils written by James V. Zaccor and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general approach, physical concepts, and methods employed in the actual development of the equipment are discussed. The equipment and its capabilities are described. A brief summary of concurrent reports that describe results of studies of response in granular media is presented. The summary indicates that the significant parameters have been correctly identified from theoretical mechanics and suitably measured, since results demonstrate relationships between stress-strain behavior and propagating waves in laboratory devices. The report also summarizes the broad range of protective construction problems which lend themselves to study in this equipment. These include such studies as the effects of reflection phenomena, the effects of layered media, soil-structure interaction in a high-stress field, and the evaluation of disturbances in free-field conditions caused by the presence of a gauge. The latter is shown to be possible by virtue of the ability to measure soil response without placing a gauge in the soil or attaching one to the sample. (Author).
