Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject African Studies - Linguistics, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: This research strives to contrast the consonant phonemes, vowel phonemes and tones of Ibibio and Igbo in order to describe their similarities and differences. It adopted the descriptive method, and relevant data on the phonology of the two languages. They were gathered and analysed within the framework of CA before making predictions and conclusions. Ibibio consists of ten vowels and fourteen consonant phonemes, while Igbo is made up of eight vowels and twenty-eight consonants. The results of contrastive analysis of the two languages showed that there are similarities as well as differences in the sound systems of the languages. With the assumptions of Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis (CAH), these differences may constitute learning problems to the learners of either language, while similarities may facilitate learning. The paper predicts issues and proffer solutions to helps teachers as well as learners tackle these difficulties. Nigeria is a densely populated country with many languages. The 21st edition Ethnologue data listed 509 indigenous living languages for Nigeria. Among them are Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba, which are recognized as the three languages spoken by the three major ethnic groups. Speakers of these different languages usually come in contact in areas of endeavour such as tourism, trade/ business, education and even in hospitals and law courts. So, learning an additional indigenous language apart from one’s mother tongue is necessary, though these languages may be similar or different in their sound inventories and structures. It is in view of this that this research intends to look at the sound systems of Ibibio and Igbo, with specific attention to segmental phonemes (consonants and vowels) and tones. Ibibio is a tonal language spoken in the South-South region, predominantly in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, and it is spoken by about four million people. Igbo is one of the four official languages of Nigeria and is a member of the VoltaNiger branch of the Niger-Congo family of languages. It is spoken in Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea by about 25 million people. In Nigeria, it is spoken in the South Eastern part of the country in states like Abia, Enugu, Delta, there are numerous Igbo dialects some of which are not mutually intelligible, but the standard written form of Igbo is based on the Owerri and Umuahia dialects, and has been in use since 1962.

Within the framework of Myers-Scotton's highly influential Matrix Language Frame (MLF) model, Kelechukwu Ihemere explores the notion of asymmetry in Igbo-English codeswitching, arguing that the two languages do not contribute equally in the creation of mixed utterances. In the abstract interaction between the two grammars, the Matrix language is more activated than the Embedded language, resulting in either monolingual Igbo discourse or discourse with an Igbo morphosyntactic frame but with English insertions. With scholars' interest in studying emergence of World Englishes, several factors that contribute to all these varieties are taken into consideration. Pronunciation variations as a result of native language influences bring forth a variety of English peculiar to the speakers' native language phonology. In order to observe the influence of Swahili phonology to English by Kenyan English speakers, in this study I will look at phonological differences between Swahili and English languages at the level of vowel sounds. In response to confirm the hypothesis, the study was carried out by analyzing news articles reported by different news reporters from four television channels in Kenya. The data was collected by listening to the news scripts while paying attention to two Swahili vowel sounds (/a/ and /i/) that tend to have impact on English vowels sounds that are close to them, in terms of place and manner of articulation, as spoken by Kenyan English speakers who speak it as a second/third language.

It is restricted to the phonological features of the consonant system of African American vernacular English (AAVE) and does not deal with the characteristics of the vowel system. Furthermore, this term paper should show that speakers of AAVE do not haphazardly insert and delete sound and that it is not fair to evaluate the sounds as “lazy speech” since the patterns used in the sound system of AAVE are completely regular and the way in which sound combinations occur, is very systematic and based on defined rules. This work also tries to make clear what AAVE is and in which ways it is different and similar to general American and Standard English. The first chapter introduces two different theories about the question how African American English might have been developed. In some contexts, it has been suggested that the pattern of final consonant sounds in AAE has similarities with the pattern of final consonant sounds in West African languages. Part two deals with the feature of consonant cluster reduction, which has received the most attention in the phonological studies of AAE. Speakers do not always say the same thing the same way all the time, of course, so the percentage rate of reduction may be greater for some speakers than others Chapter 3 focuses on the fact that interdental fricatives, represented orthographically by th in Standard English, are often realized by labio- dental fricatives among some AAE speakers. It reveals that voicing value of consonant sounds plays a major role in the production of sounds. For example /f/ and /v/ occur in environments in which voiceless th and voiced th occur in Standard English. Part 4 concentrates on the feature of devoicing and especially on the correlation of the variable /d/ with social class. Data adopted from Wolfram helps to study the speech of Negroes from several socio- economic levels and shows the relationship between the use of sound patterns and extralingusitic factors. Chapter 5 continues the discussion of consonants, focusing on the liquids /r/ and /l/. It explains environments in which /r/ is not produced by speakers of AAE. The last chapter lists some other phonological features of AAVE, but not in a detailed way, as there is not enough data available.
