Book excerpt: "In the present study, flash x-ray photography as well as high speed regular photography was used to investigate the fragmentation process during the vapor explosion of single drops of molten metal in water. For drops heated to 700$ sp circ$C, a vapor bubble is formed around the drop after a short induction time of about 80 $ mu$s which grows to a maximum diameter and then collapses. X-ray radiographs, which can "see through" the vapor bubble, show that filaments of metal protruding from the drop surface are produced during the bubble growth. At the time of the bubble collapse, the drop surface is highly convoluted and a second interaction is initiated producing an even larger second bubble in the case of tin drops. A mechanism based on nonuniform superheating and evaporation of the water upon unstable film collapse is proposed to describe the origin of the melt filaments. For liquid drops under isothermal conditions with the water, fragmentation occurs as mass is stripped off the surface due to relative motion of the water. For hot drops at higher flow velocities (i.e., $>$45 m/s) initially a vapor bubble forms but it is quickly displaced downstream. It is proposed that evaporation at the upstream surface of the bubble generates a vapor flow around the drop surface which strips the drop surface. The vapor flow carries the fragments into the bubble region behind the drop. The vapor later condenses leaving a cloud of fragments which are subsequently dispersed by the water. The dynamics of the vapor bubble produced by the explosion of a hot drop under low flow conditions is modeled using a parametric model incorporating the Rayleigh equation for bubble dynamics and an energy equation for the vapor to account for added heat transfer from the distorting drop surface. Estimates of the total heat transferred from the drop show that only 3% of the initial drop thermal energy is converted into work done by the vapor bubble." --

Book excerpt: Explosive interactions between molten aluminum and water are being studied with a focus on fundamentals to determine what causes robust-enough triggers for explosion onset, to determine the extent of protection provided from various coatings and to develop a fundamentally-based simple, cost-effective novel methodology for prevention. The workscope includes experimentation and mathematical modeling of the interactions between molten metals and water at various different coated and uncoated surfaces. Phenomenological issues related to surface wettability, gas generation from coatings, charring of coatings, inertial constraint, melt temperature, water temperature, external shocks are being investigated systematically to gage their relative impact on the triggerability of surface-assisted steam explosions. The steam explosion triggering studies (SETS) facility was designed and constructed as a rapid-turnaround, cost-effective, and safe means to address these phenomenological issues. Data from SETS tests have indicated that, non-condensible gas (NCG) generation during paint pyrolysis plays a predominant role in explosion prevention. This paper describes results of studies on impact of deliberate NCG injection on explosion prevention, via molten melt drops free-falling into water, as well as from tests using the SETS facility for studying entrapment induced explosive boiling. SETS is also being used to obtain information on time-varying and integral amounts of NCGs generated from various paints. Relevant data are presented. Results of investigations, taken together provide compelling evidence on the positive role NCGs play on explosion prevention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physical mechanism by which small quantities of molten metal fragment extensively when dropped into a pool of cold water was investigated. Since this subject has been the focus of considerable research in the past, some of the more prominent theories are briefly discussed. Experiments were conducted dropping small solid spheres at a high temperature instead of molten metal drops, and indicate a significant difference from the latter. Several hypotheses were proposed based on the hydrodynamics of the molten drop and tested analytically. The theory that the drop fragmentation is caused by the violent release of dissolved gas from within the drop was investigated experimentally and lead to the conclusion that tin fragmentation probably does not occur in this way. It is felt that a calculation of the dynamics of the vapor film that would be expected to surround the hot drop is needed. This calculation was not performed but several suggestions and estimates have been made. It would seem that the possibility of metal fragmentation by rapid vaporization of water entrapped within the metal drop is well worth investigating.
