Book A Study of the Breakup and Atomization of a Combusting Diesel Fuel Spray by Phase Doppler Anemometry

Download or read book A Study of the Breakup and Atomization of a Combusting Diesel Fuel Spray by Phase Doppler Anemometry written by G. Pitcher and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fuel droplet velocity and size measurements have been obtained in a combusting Diesel spray inside a single-cylinder direct injection Diesel engine. The measurements were made in the near nozzle region by phase Doppler anemometry with high spatial and temporal resolution. An analysis of the data describes the fuel spray breakup and atomization based on a liquid jet and model and identifies three distinct zones in the developing spray. (Author).

Book Optical Diagnostics for Flow Processes

Download or read book Optical Diagnostics for Flow Processes written by P. Buchhave and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of optical methods for fluid flow investigations appears to be nontraceable. This is no matter for surprise. After all seeing provides the most direct and common way for humans to learn about their environment. But at the same time some of the most sophisticated methods for doing measurements in fluids are also based on light and often laser light. A very large amount of material has been published in this area over the last two decades. Why then another publication? Well, the field is still in a state of rapid development. It is characterised by the use of results and methods developed within very different areas like optical physics, spectroscopy, communication systems, electronics and computer science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and, of course, fluid dynamics. We are not aware of a book containing both introductory and more advanced material that covers the same material as presented here. The book is the result of a compilation and expansion of material presented at a summer school on Optical Diagnosticsfor Flow Processes, held at RiS0 National Laboratory and the Technical University of Denmark in September 1993. The aim of the course was to provide a solid background for understanding, evaluating, and using modem optical diagnostic methods, addressing Ph. D. students and researchers active in areas of fluid flow research. The disciplines represented by the participants ranged from atmospheric fluid dynamics to biomedicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this long-time bestseller provides a framework for designing and understanding sprays for a wide array of engineering applications. The text contains correlations and design tools that can be easily understood and used in relating the design of atomizers to the resulting spray behavior. Written to be accessible to readers with a modest technical background, the emphasis is on application rather than in-depth theory. Numerous examples are provided to serve as starting points for using the information in the book. Overall, this is a thoroughly updated edition that still retains the practical focus and readability of the original work by Arthur Lefebvre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-uniform combustion, as encountered in diesel and gas turbine engines, furnaces, and boilers, is responsible for the conversion of fossil fuel to energy and also for the corresponding formation of pollutants. In spite of great research efforts in the past, the mechanism of non-uniform combustion has remained less explored than that of other combustion types, since it consists of many, mostly transient processes which influence each other. In view of this background, a group research project, "Exploration of Combustion Mechanism", was established to explore the mechanism of combustion, especially that of diffusive combustion, and also to find efficient ways to control the combustion process for better utilization of fuel and the reduction of pollutant emission. The group research was started, after preparatory activity of 2 years, in April 1988, for a period of 3 years, as a project with a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research of Priority Area subsidized by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Japan. The entire group of 43 members was set up as an organizing committee of 13 members, and five research groups, consisting of 36 members. The research groups were: (1) Steady combustion, (2) Unsteady spray combustion, (3) Control of combustion, (4) Chemistry of combustion, and (5) Effects of fuels. At the beginning of the project it was agreed that we should pursue the mechanism of combustion from a scientific viewpoint, namely, the target of the project was to obtain the fundamentals, or "know why", rather than "know how" of combustion.

Book A Study of Droplet Velocity and Diameter Measurements in a Reacting Diesel Spray Produced by a Flow blurring Injector

Download or read book A Study of Droplet Velocity and Diameter Measurements in a Reacting Diesel Spray Produced by a Flow blurring Injector written by Yasin Gokmen and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many combustion applications such as gas turbines, liquid fuel atomization is important to obtain lower emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbons (UHCs), and soot particles. Thus, understanding spray characteristics is essential for determining how fuel and air mix with each other and subsequently combustion takes place. In this experimental study, Phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA) and OH* Chemiluminescence (CL) imaging techniques are employed as a diagnostic technique to monitor the spray characteristics in the cold and reacting regions of a diesel spray flame using a flow-blurring (FB) injector. PDPA is a well-known technique to measure the diameter and velocity of spherical particles. PDPA is used in many research applications including fuel injection, spray, and combustion. PDPA system does not disturb the flow being measured, and thus, it is preferable over intrusive measurement techniques. A baseline case using a FB injector with a 3 mm orifice exit diameter and no inner slant is studied and operated at air to liquid mass ratio (ALR) of 2.0, heat release rate (HRR) of 60 kW, and equivalence ratio (Ï6) of 0.75. First, OH* chemiluminescence imaging is used to analyze the flame structure. Next, PDPA is used to acquire velocity and Sauter mean diameter (SMD) distributions in cold and flame regions. Then, a parametric study is performed by varying the ALR, and its influence on the diameter and velocity of the fuel droplets is investigated. The findings from OH* CL images suggest that as the ALR increases, the FB injector produces fine droplets and enhances secondary atomization to disintegrate the droplets further. Furthermore, the results show that FB injector produces finer droplets and mean axial velocity increases as ALR is increased. The Sauter mean diameter (SMD) and mean axial velocity decreases as the droplets enter the flame zone because heat released leads to droplet evaporation. Therefore, the larger droplets become finer whereas finer droplets are completely vaporized and mixed with the air.

Book Experimental Study on Diesel Spray with Single and Multiple Injection Under Room Temperature and Low Temperature

Download or read book Experimental Study on Diesel Spray with Single and Multiple Injection Under Room Temperature and Low Temperature written by Ziman Wang and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple-injection strategy can downsize the penetration and boost the atomization, causing higher IMEP and lower emissions. Multiple-injection however is complex, especially under cold condition. The injection characteristics were first studied by applying long-tube measuring instrument. Single and split injection strategies were employed. The flow rate and fuel mass were quantitatively studied. Furthermore, the interaction among splits was linked to dwell interval and injection duration of each split. The influences of temperature were also studied.A microscope and a CCD camera were then employed to study the primary breakup. The regime for the mushroom spray head was analyzed and the dispersion quality was quantified. The breakup-regime study was carried out. Flow regimes in nozzle dominate the breakup. Dwell interval, injection pressure, the number of injections and fuel temperature determined the interaction. The following is the investigation of macroscopic characteristics with high speed imaging technique. The effects of back pressure and the interaction between injections were investigated. The impact of cold fuel temperature was investigated and various correlations were employed to probe the influence of fuel temperature. The velocities and sizes of droplets were finally studied with Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer.
