Book Application of Radar to Measurement of Surface Precipitation

Download or read book Application of Radar to Measurement of Surface Precipitation written by Pauline M. Austin and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remote PPI with display of three intensity levels in shades of gray and compensation for range variations in scope illumination has been set up for the WR-66 radar. Camera attachments have been added to both radars. Design of the data processor has been completed. Printed circuits have been drawn and chasses have been built. A sensing unit for a continuously and automatically recording raindrop spectrometer has been built. Data taken in a number of storms show clearly that the WR-66 radar does not suffer from the limitations of attenuation, and low sensitivity and resolution which have been observed in the AN/CPS-9 and SCR-615-B radars. Applications and Analysis: Analysis of the mesoscale precipitation patterns in various types of storms and their relation to macroscale parameters is continuing. Coastal cyclones, some overland cyclones from the southwest, cold fronts and air mass storms have been analyzed. Results of a numerical analysis of snowflake aggregation are summarized. (Author).

Book Direct and Inverse Methods in Radar Polarimetry

Download or read book Direct and Inverse Methods in Radar Polarimetry written by W.M Boerner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 1076 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This foreword deals exclusively with the planning, organization, and execution of the Workshop's scientific as well as cultural programs. It is opened with a synopsis on how the global political changes that occurred immediately after the Workshop caused the ~elay in producing the proceedings, followed by a brief exposition on need, timeliness, and importance of this second ARW in the field of electromagnetic imaging, radar remote sensing, and target versus clutter di~rimination; and an outline of the objectives. An informal discussion about some of the organizational details, a retrospective summary of events, and a preview of the third workshop, planned for 1993 September 19-25, is intended to recapture the spirit of this second NATO Advanced Research Workshop (1988 September 18-24), and will reveal how successful it was in compar ison to the first of 1983 September 18-24, how its accomplishments may be appreciated and why a third and last workshop was requested by its participants to take place during 1993 September 19-25.

Book Investigation of the Quantitative Determination of Point and Areal Precipitation by Radar Echo Measurements

Download or read book Investigation of the Quantitative Determination of Point and Areal Precipitation by Radar Echo Measurements written by A. L. Sims and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two drop cameras were operated in Illinois and one at Flagstaff, Arizona. Data obtained from these installations are being reduced and analyzed. The rainfall rate-radar reflectivity relationships are summarized. The data from Miami, Florida, has been stratified by synoptic type, rainfall type, and by a measure of the instability. A brief description of an objective means of coalescence curve fitting is described. (Author).

Book Radar Signal Intensity from Different Levels in Steady Snow

Download or read book Radar Signal Intensity from Different Levels in Steady Snow written by Raymond Wexler and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: In this study deductions concerning the growth of snow crystals are made from measurements of the radar echo from steady snow at various levels in the atmosphere. Cunningham (1) used radar observations to help in formulating a hypothesis for the growth and melting of snowflakes and the subseauent growth of the water drops in a particular storm. In his study the radar observations were of a qualitative nature, since they consisted of photographs of the RHI scope. The theory of the variation with elevation of the radar echo intensity in widespread steady precipitation was analyzed by Wexler (2) and comparison was made with radar observations of warm front precipitation by Browne at Cambridge University, England. The theory is repeated here with modification. The intensity of the radar signal from precipitation is dependent upon the size, shape, number and composition (ice or water) of the scattering particles. All of these various characteristics cannot be learned from the radar measurements alone but useful deductions can be made when other available information, such as radiosonde and wind data, is considered in conjunction with the radar observations. In particular, because of the sensitive dependence of radar reflectivity upon particle size, it appears reasonable to attempt to interpret an increase in radar signal strength in terms of particle growth.
