Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of using history of scien ce, following the historical model described by Monk and Osborne (1997) while le arning science on students' attitudes toward science and their conceptions of th ree aspects of the nature of science (NOS). These aspects are namely the tentati ve, the empirical nature of scientific knowledge, and the role of scientists' cr eativity in the development of scientific knowledge. These specific aspects of t he NOS are addressed in the historical model used. Questionnaires were used to m easure the two constructs above, the nature of scientific knowledge scale (NSKS) and the test of science related attitudes (TOSRA), and achievement tests were u sed to compare students' content knowledge. Participants in the study are middle school students divided into two groups ser ving as experimental and control conditions. The first group, the experimental g roup, consists of 24 Grade 8 students who were taught two chemistry units (atomi c structure and chemical reactions) using Monk and Osborne model throughout one semester (3 months), while the second group, the control group, consisted of 24 grade 8 students who studied the same content, using the same model yet eliminat ing the historical components. The study is of the experimental type. The study involved a pre-post test design . Both the control and the experimental groups were administered the NSKS, the T OSRA and the achievement test as the pre tests. As an intervention the experimen tal group was taught the chemistry units using Monk and Osborne Model from the h istorical perspective; the control group was taught the same units using the sam e model but without the historical components. Following the teaching, students were administered the NSKS, TOSRA, and the achievement test as post-tests. An ANCOVA was used to compare results for participants in the experimental and t he control groups on attitude, three elements of the NOS, and the achievement te sts. A significant gain was observed in the means of the attitude scores. The ov erall NOS scores showed significant gain, yet only the tentative aspect scores s howed a significant gain among the studied elements. Unfortunately, despite over 30 years of research related to gender and science education, females still are underrepresented in some upper-level high school science courses, particular college science curricula and majors, and many scientific careers. While boys and girls enter school with equal ability, girls are marginalized in science and math to the point that they trail males in science interest and participation by graduation time. However, such differences have decreased. While attitudes, achievement levels, and the other components of "the science education experience" have been quantitatively examined, very little qualitative analysis exists to describe the educational experience of females in American high school classrooms from the perspective of the student. A description of this phenomenon as constructed through the experiences of female students represents a worthy pursuit. This book represents an attempt to describe this phenomenon as constructed through the experiences of female students. Very simply, the purpose of this book was to describe the essential elements of the current science education experience as constructed by female physics and advanced chemistry students. The construct of science education experience for females included perceived (a) affective attitudes, (b) achievement and success, (c) ability, (d) cultural factors, (e) social-psychological factors, (f) interpersonal factors, and (g) instructional/teacher factors. All of these topics are addressed in What Girls Say About Their Science Education Experiences.
